In a brief comment (http://daringfireball.net/linked/2010/01/12/techcrunch-tablet) regarding the Apple tablet, Daring Fireball's John Gruber, notes that his sources have indicated that the device will not include a camera. And, for what it's worth, I'm hearing there is no camera, webcam or otherwise, on The Tablet. The much-followed Gruber has several times in the past offered accurate information on forthcoming Apple products, most recently correctly revealing (http://www.macrumors.com/2009/10/19/rumors-of-new-apple-hardware-tomorrow-swirling/) Apple's October product unveilings (with the exception of his "wildcard" multi-touch trackpad gadget claim) the evening before their release.
Little more than speculation has suggested that Apple's tablet will include a digital camera, with such rumors sparked in early April (http://www.macrumors.com/2009/04/03/apple-ordering-3-2-and-5-megapixel-camera-sensors-for-iphone-and-future-product/) with a report that Apple had ordered both 3.2- and 5-megapixel camera sensors, with the former slated for what became the iPhone 3GS and the latter for a product scheduled for introduction later in 2009.
Sources were also fairly quiet about whether the tablet would offer a webcam until relatively recently, when claims began to increase. The earliest widespread claim of a webcam appears to have been in mid-August (http://www.macrumors.com/2009/08/13/apple-tablet-to-offer-webcam-option-serve-as-touchscreen-input-device-for-macs/) with reports that Apple would offer two models, with and without webcam. Webcam speculation increased significantly yesterday after France Telecom executive Stéphane Richard appeared to offer some confirmation (http://www.macrumors.com/2010/01/11/france-telecom-executive-confirms-forthcoming-release-of-apple-tablet/) of a forthcoming tablet release including a webcam option for videoconferencing, although company representatives quickly clarified that Richard's comments had been misconstrued.

why are people so adamant about there being a camera?
are you going to take a photo or shoot video with a 10" device?
is it really an ideal situation to have a videoconference where you have to hold the device in front of you?

I did not see how a camera could work on a machine that will be laying flat on a desk anyway.
There are way too many cameras on things already.
Need to web conference then plug one in...pretty simple.

The second product with the 3.2 meg camera is the touch, right? And that's where a camera belongs, not on your new iSlate/magazine++ viewer. Different niches.
These are the guys who removed serial ports and then decided the mezzanine slot was costing them too much money on the first iMac. If it costs a buck or two to add a camera, why do it when it'll sell just as well in its first version without? If you want to, add a camera later (nano, touch) to boost sales without having to be particularly innovative.

I think Apple's problem is iChat, which is, I have to say, a huge flop. If they bought Skype, video chat would be theirs. But iChat -- although it can put you underwater, or chat among multiple friends -- is a huge bandwidth hog, and thus only works in broadband heaven.

I think that the camera is going to be pretty wide angle and have person-tracking software like many other webcams.
This of course supporting the iSlate having a kick-stand theory.

No, it will not. It will, no doubt, extend the Halo Effect even further than did the iPhone, which in turn had a bigger Halo than the iPods. More and more people will consider buying a Mac, and many will do so. That, and protecting the profit margin, is what it's all about.

A camera for shooting photos or videos makes little sense. It would be so much worse than a dedicated device I don't see the point. It makes sense in a phone mainly because of the advantage that you always have it with you. This won't typically apply to a tablet.
A forward-facing video camera for chat/conferencing makes a lot more sense.

why are people so adamant about there being a camera?
are you going to take a photo or shoot video with a 10" device?
I would; absolutely. If there is email on the slate than it would be nice to be able to attach photos taken right then and there. I can imagine using my tablet, seeing something cool somewhere and just clicking on the camera icon to capture the moment immediately, rather than putting the tablet down, digging out my iPhone, unlocking it and opening the camera app. It would be convenient. Also, what about Augmented Reality Apps, which it has been speculated the slate could do better than an iPhone. Not to mention other camera-using apps.

A camera doesn't really make sense for a 10" tablet.
For videoconferencing, you would have to prop up the device and any sort of touchscreen interaction would probably look a bit creepy to the person on the other side. On a MacBook, you have a stable platform and you can adjust the camera via the screen hinge; typing on the notebook's keyboard isn't really an issue.
For taking photos (or video) with a tablet, you would be hand holding a fairly large device which would exacerbate camera shake.

See this -> Apple's patent for an LCD display that also takes photos, video (http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/08/03/26/apples_patent_for_an_lcd_display_that_also_takes_photos_video.html)
Could be uber-uber-cool if the camera sensed your gestures in 3d - slightly above the tablet - but that may be asking too much.

well, in my situtation it makes perfect sense. i travel for work and my work computer is locked down for security reasons. no skype, flash and such can be installed. so i'd like to have a small device that i can take with me for web browsing, itunes, videos, movies and video skype. i don't need to touch the device while i'm on video skype.
For taking photos (or video) with a tablet, you would be hand holding a fairly large device which would exacerbate camera shake.
i agree that such a device would be a lousy camera. but it's nice to have the possibility to take a shot of a newspaper article and mail it to a friend and such.
bottom line: a webcam is a must, a camera for photos is a nice to have for me.

I really doubt Apple would fail to put a camera on the new tablet. Apple is a company that seems to put a big importance on photography and video capturing and loves cramming a camera into anything. Hell, even the iPod nano has a camera.

Of course we were saying the same thing about a front facing camera on the iPhone and you know where that ended up.
How's this for a wacky idea (and hello to all of you... this is my first contribution to the forums)
Perhaps the new tablet will be geared specifically to operate WITH the iPhone. So, you hook your iPhone up to the tablet and that gives you your webcam, and it doesn't matter that the camera is on the 'wrong' side of the phone. It'd also (assuming exclusivity) behoove people to have both an iPhone AND a tablet device. In this case, you don't have to build any iPhone functionality directly into the tablet... it could leverage the iPhone when connected, and have its own set of functions that don't make the phone redundant.
...or am I nuts?

Makes sense. Apple isn't going to release everything on the first iPod Slate. It will hold back a lot of features for future releases. I don't want a camera on it, but I did hope we would get a web cam on the front so we could do video conferencing like the Frenchman who said so yesterday. It really might mean that he didn't have any clue of what he was stating. Unfortunately, that supposed screw up will just make many disappointed when the new tablet doesn't have a web cam.
Future releases are going to improve on hardware and software... that's the Apple way. Look back at the iPod, iPhone, and all Macs to see that they include one or two features on every version of a product that should have always been there... but weren't included earlier for the simple point of future sales.
I still expect the initial iPod Slate to be an amazing product worth every penny of the retail price. I also expect it to be sold out across the world. Everyone will want one, and soon enough Apple will have us all believing that we NEED an iPod Slate!

Jan 12, 2010, 01:26 PM
It was will sell just as many units with or without video chat, as it's no where near an important feature. Some people would use it, occassionally. Beyond that it's worthless. We have other machines that can do that. Give us multi touch productivity apps, something NEW that actually matters.

Steve Jobs at WWDC 2007
WWDC 2007 took place from June 11 to June 15 in Moscone West, San Francisco with the keynote presentation hosted by Steve Jobs. Apple showed off a feature-complete beta of Mac OS v10.5 "Leopard", though its release date was pushed back to October. Jobs announced that Safari would now be available for Windows and announced support for third-party development for the then upcoming iPhone via online web applications through the iPhone's web browser. Jobs also announced the launch date for the iPhone, which he was widely expected to do, as June 29, 2007. Jobs also announced that Apple Safari, Apple's proprietary web browser, would run on the iPhone; and that Apple (at the time) had no plans to release an iPhone SDK, meaning that developers would have to use standard web protocols.

A lot of people thought the original iPhone was a bit disappointing. Most came on board with the launch of the 3G with iPhone OS2 and the App Store.
They sold roughly a million a month in 2007 and in 2008. 4 million phones in 2007, and almost 12million in 2008. Considering the first 2-3 months were slow due to the non-subsidized cost, and the store didn't come out until June 08, I'd say the app store didn't affect iphone sales all that much right out of the box. Now that there is competition from droid, etc. it is certainly a major selling point.

I'd be very disappointed if there's no front-facing camera. I'd *love* to videoconference with friends with this tablet, from anywhere (provided there's wifi, of course). I'm not expecting it to work with 3G - I wouldn't pay for a plan with a tablet, I'm already paying out of my ass for my iPhone, I don't need another bill.
And for those saying videoconferencing takes more power than the tablet would have - are you serious? I videoconference just fine with a 1.6 GHz Atom netbook a couple years ago. And even further back, I videoconference decently with an iBook G3 6 years ago.
Is the tablet predicted to be even weaker than an iBook G3?

The iPhone and iSlate will be integrated in other ways. I don't believe the iSlate will have 3G. WiFi and Bluetooth only. But I do expect the iSlate to be the first device that works with the iPhone for "legal" tethering through AT&T. AT&T said it was coming, they just didn't say when. I say it's going to happen when the iSlate gets released. Price? An extra $20-$30 per month on top of your existing iPhone account. I'd sign up for that! That's WAY better than another $60 per month for a dedicated 3G data card built into the iSlate.
You'll hear all about it on January 26 (or is it the 27th now?). :)

Yeah, making it a 10" hand-held portable video conferencing device just by adding a simple quarter inch camera would be SO STUPID!
WHY DO PEOPLE MAKE SUCH STUPID REMARKS???:confused::confused:

Again, Apple's design decisions have nothing to do with an given individual's needs.
They select features that have bring value to the overall marketplace, likely consumers in this place.
While you are certainly free to state your case, my hunch is that the functionality you desire would not be used by most users for the reasons I mentioned.
I guess you won't be buying the tablet. That's too bad.
As an AAPL stockholder, I want them to make very careful decisions about which features to install on this device and to keep a watchful eye on costs. I want this thing priced attractively with fat margins so they increase shareholder value.

They sold ok in the first year but sales really took off with the introduction of the 3G and the App Store in July 2008.

Sounds like it may be taking up too much resources to add two-way video chat.
If that were the only issue they could offer crippled bandwidth initially just to check the box and offer the capability despite bandwidth limits, or, offer it wifi or docked only. To cripple it 100% would be silly.
What is more likely is the tablet will not have a traditional camera because the screen is an image sensor.
It would also allow scanning of medical records.

why are people so adamant about there being a camera?
are you going to take a photo or shoot video with a 10" device?
is it really an ideal situation to have a videoconference where you have to hold the device in front of you?
It's just because people have failed to find any use for this device so far. Video chat was one of the candidates and now it's gone.

It's amazing that people will even justify it not not having a camera. All this indicates now is that it's main function is an e-reader. It will be a more powerful because of the App Store but at the end of the day it's just an e-reader.
If that's what you need or if it just floats you're boat, then go for it but it will be a niche product. I guess Apple is at the point where they can go into this area.

I was going to bring this point up if noone else did. Engadget did a piece on this back in 2006. I think 4 years is a pretty good lead that we could now see this in action.

I don't believe this rumor...Apple has been a pioneer with cameras on Portable computers. Although a few people had it on their laptops before the Macbook Pro, it really moved PC makers to do that.
However, I must admit that Apple has really dropped the ball on the iPhone.

Yes, there is no point in having a camera on the back of the Tablet to take photos like with an iPhone due to its size, but why not put a camera on the front for use as a webcam? If this thing tries to compete with netbooks, it has to "do the internet" in every possible way, meaning that it has to support video conferencing.
Then again, a Tablet cannot stay upright on a table without you holding it, so a video conference would be quite awkward holding the tablet all the time...

I don't know...is it nuts to post the same thing someone did 11 posts before? or is that just stealing? ;)

Mark
ATT can't even handle the traffic the iPhone draws, let alone a bunch of people tethering an even more medai centric device to it. Whatever they end up doing, if it has a cell radio I don't see ATT as being the exclusive carrier.
Still holding out hope for something small (~7-9"), semi-cheap, and with some form of free (or at least free with MobileMe) data connection ala the Kindle (even if it's limited to iTMS, email, and a couple of other sites like wikipedia, Facebook and/or Twitter, etc).

How many people seriously use the web cam on their laptops? Of those who actually do, how many use it if their laptop was now laying flat. A lot of people thought the original iPhone was a bit disappointing. Most came on board with the launch of the 3G with iPhone OS2 and the App Store.
Dumb phones had more functionality than the original iPhone. All the iPhone had going for it was a pretty UI. It definitely was not a smartphone ( despite Apple comparing it against other smartphones on the market at that time ).

don't agree. my hunch is that a lot of people want it. even if it's just for the first five minutes for the show effect (see camera in ipod nano or nintendo)
I guess you won't be buying the tablet. That's too bad..
i would buy it if the tablet is really good even if apple decides against the web camera. other features would make it still useful.
As an AAPL stockholder, I want them to make very careful decisions about which features to install on this device and to keep a watchful eye on costs. I want this thing priced attractively with fat margins so they increase shareholder value.

Times have changed since the Newton was around, cellular networks couldn't do much data with very poor bandwidth, dial up networking sucked with video conferencing - too slow. The quality of cameras also sucked.

I may be projecting, but when I travel I mostly need to:
1) read and respond to emails
2) view office documents and pdfs. sometimes light editing/annotation.
3) web access

No camera? I just sent a thousand dollars to some guy in Nigeria who e-mailed me saying he'd send me an Apple tablet if I gave him my credit card number. Now I want my money back. (He must be sending me more than one tablet 'cause my credit card statement shows a $10,000 charge!) :o
The only reason I can think of why Apple wouldn't include a camera on tablet 1.0 is because the designers are going for "sleek". But just like the iPhone, expect upgrades each year (year 2 gives you a camera, year 3 gives 3G, year 4 gives you a house in the Hamptons, etc.).
Honestly, the tablet, to be successful, will be all about the interface (just as the iPhone was) and what you can do with it, all packaged beautifully. The media world wants this thing to blow people away with its ability to showcase media, so it has to be full color, with outstanding video display capability, communications for uploading (Bluetooth, WiFi and possibly 3G), etc.
A camera would be nice, but not essential.

Everything is coming together. They probably didn't release the Magic Slate back then so they wouldn't leak the advanced input method.

I agree with John here. I think the tablet would be GREAT for video teleconferencing purposes. I was hoping for a version of iChat AV on it, or at LEAST the ability to run Skype with video.
Sure, you wouldn't want to hold the thing in front of you and use it to take pictures like a camera ... but you might at least use it to take self-portraits. That's the "weak spot" with camera phones.
On the flip-side though, the tablet might not be allowed to be used in a lot of workplaces unless it comes in a version WITHOUT the camera - so I think Apple needs to sell it both ways.
I'll be disappointed. I'd like to have the option to use this device for video conferencing. Boooo.

Or a dock. I keep picturing some kind of multipurpose dock. One for at your desk that lets you connect to a keyboard and mouse to use as your productivity tool. Then pop it out of that dock to take to your living room and dock to your TV and use as an AppleTV. Then when you go out or to bed, out of the dock it goes to be used as a mobile surfing, email, games, ebook, and/or media player for bed, bathroom, or travel.

My Dell Mini 9 supports this and some people think Apple is going to withhold this? If so then it is more of large iPod Touch than I thought. I could see WiFi only for video if 3G bandwidth is an issue.
Maybe what I really need is an Air to compliment my MBP and iPhone?

A camera on the back would be great for those moments when you're sitting in the cafe trying to look like you're reading and you want to zoom in on that hot babe across the way without her knowing you're looking at her... yeah, I don't know what else you'd do with it either.
But the idea that it wouldn't come with a user-facing camera of some kind seems not quite right.

Sounds like it may be taking up too much resources to add two-way video chat.
Not a good sign, given all the technology available today. If this device is going to be true multimedia, a camera would be a given. Then one would just plop the tablet into a provided easel stand and skype away with parents and loved ones all across the world via their wi-fi!--)))
Time will tell, but the lack of a simple web cam would not surprise me. Apple as others have stated would then add it to rev b or c.

A camera for shooting photos or videos makes little sense. It would be so much worse than a dedicated device I don't see the point. It makes sense in a phone mainly because of the advantage that you always have it with you. This won't typically apply to a tablet.
I did not see how a camera could work on a machine that will be laying flat on a desk anyway.
There are way too many cameras on things already.
Need to web conference then plug one in...pretty simple.
This and this.
If I want to take a photo of something, and a 10-inch tablet is about as bulky as my Canon 5D and L-series lens, then I will select the one that blasts the other away in terms of picture quality. The last thing the world needs is more crappy pencil eraser sized multi-MP photo sensors in every device you carry

Radical thought. Think about this rationally for a moment. Apple planned to put a camera in the Nano, its low end device. The chance of NOT including it on its new shiny is zero. Also the cameras are used for a wide variety of things. Example, scanning bar codes for in-store price checks.
No webcam? Sure. Maybe. No camera? Nope.
Rocketman
Do you honestly think people would embrace walking around with a bulky 10-inch tablet to snap bar codes for price checks? It's not much different than suggesting people do this with their 13-inch macbooks, and I can't say I've ever seen anyone do that.

The point is not to replace your SLR. It's to provide video chat/conferencing features for people on-the-road (which is where a lot of purchasers of a tablet computing device are).

Why would the tablet have to lie down flat? I think it would be FAR more intelligent a design to put a fold-out hinge on the back so it can sit upright at several different adjustable angles (like a photo frame might do).
It's simply not something one would expect Apple to do, it doesn't fit within their design principles, but who knows.

While probably completely wrong, whats a rumor site without speculation?
Steve nears the end of his presentation and says,
"I would like to address the tablet rumors that have been flying around for some time now".
"We will not be building a tablet".
"They are bad for a variety of reasons which have left them to niche market status".
"We dont see any growth there".
"But, I do have one more thing for you...we call it the Macbook Touch".
The real key for apple is to distance themselves from tablets. There are lots of awful tablets out there. By defining their product, they can also define what makes it a success. Rather than allowing other peoples dreams and desires to define it for them. If they call this thing a tablet, they are in for a headache.

I think this device will spend most of it's time on your coffee table or in the kitchen. You'll pick it up and put it down 100 times a day to read your email, a book, recipes and magazines. Mothers will take photos of the kids and email them. Kids will photograph themselves and post them on facebook. When grandma comes over you'll take a dozen family snaps and print them. When it's not in use you put it on it's stand and it becomes a digital photo frame. Unfortunately for the geekier amongst us, I think this will be a living room device and as such it needs a camera.

I'm not buying into this one at all.
First, there have been others that have been considered just as reliable as a source to say otherwise. Kevin Rose and others have said it will be much more than just a giant iPod Touch device with a camera. Other podcasts have had guests on as well claiming that it will be more than just a consumable media device, much more.
That's why until it comes out in a couple of weeks these rumors will persist. While nothing is guaranteed, I think it HAS to be more and from all the reports it will be. So that means video camera, maybe even gesturing motion like Project Natel by Microsoft type of stuff. But who knows, all I know is it must have a camera if they want more use out of it.

I'm not sure why people are against something that takes almost no space and adds essentially nothing to the cost. Cameras are useful things. I probably wouldn't use it on a daily basis, but I don't use the audio in jack on my Macbook either. I wouldn't argue that that should be removed...

I can't think of a single living room device with a camera right now, unless you consider the addons for consoles. So why does a living room device need a camera again?
You seem to think a camera, not just a webcam is in the making too. I can see the possibility for a webcam (but I don't expect one). I don't know why they would add a camera... a tablet isn't exactly camera sized. I'd think it would be more likely that people would be able to wireless transfer pictures from their iPhone to the tablet.

But... a webcam is a camera. Take a single frame from a webcam and, hey presto, it's a still image, hence it is a camera. They cost pennies to put into devices these days. The cheapest gadgetphone has video/still image capabilities. Leaving out a webcam on the fabled iPod Slate is like leaving out USB on a PC. It's entirely possible, but it'll cost you in the market much more than you'll save on manufacture. Apple would be stupid to omit this, but as they seem to change USB/firewire functionality on every iteration of their macbooks/iMacs - it wouldn't surprise me if they did do something so idiotic. But it's a long shot. Even St. Steve isn't that dumb.

Actually I can think of one, my iPhone. It sits in the living room, gets used by me, the missus and the kids for web surfing, watching tv shows, facebooking and taking lots of photos. There's a perfectly good MacBook Pro in the study and a camera in the draw beneath it but the iPhone is just so damned convenient it gets used more. That's what I think will be used to differentiate this product from the cheap netbooks people will tell you to buy because "they're half the price and do twice as much", it will be the convenience.

It seems to me the computer has become the new "television", an "idiot box" that goes with you anywhere at anytime. From this description (which is fairly spot on), computers are the next "best friend" that goes to work with you, helps you communicate with others without actually being face to face, and then sleeps next to you in bed. Hell, I'm guilty of it. I watch television on my Mac Pro with EyeTV, I use Facebook, I work on my Mac, and hell, there are some days I never have to communicate with people face to face as I work and study from home.
My point is society generally is becoming more and more anti-social through computers. Technology is meant to facilitate life, not define it. All these rumors of an rumored new Apple device are fantastic and entertaining, but is another device really necessary to live life? I look around the NYC subways and streets, and there are more iPods, iPhones and iDevices keeping people from human interaction than ever before. Remember when pay phones where the main mode of human telephony? Now human conversation is being replaced with emails and text messaging. Some comments in the rumor mills have suggested this new device will read lips for communication, or further may even detect touch-free hand gesturing in front of the screen. WOW. Now we don't even need to directly communicate with COMPUTERS. It's mind blowing.
In the end, put technology away and try to communicate with people the old fashioned way: directly. ;)

Yes, "etiquette" is what we're losing.
When you're at dinner with friends, and someone says "when X happened in 1998 or 1999, did Y..." and the Iphone geeks start tapping and several conversation topics later they look up and say "it was 10 March 1999, and Y..." you just feel sorry for them - they went into their "bubble" and are no longer part of the group conversation. Why did they come to dinner if they're going to focus on their PDAs?
"X" and "Y" were minor things that were briefly mentioned and left behind. No need to look them up and file a report during dinner. People don't choose to have dinner with online encyclopedias.

For taking photos (or video) with a tablet, you would be hand holding a fairly large device which would exacerbate camera shake.

I am starting to feel like the main reason people do anything is to tweet about it or update their facebook status or text someone.
I was out to dinner last Friday night and I was amazed looking around at how many people were at a table with others and had their heads buried in their phones.
All of you commenting on this are 10 years late. Radiohead already beat you to it with OK Computer.
Is it really any surprise that people are this self-involved? The hilarious irony is that tech is supposed to make your life easier but in fact has added more burdens to our lives. All you have to know is that there are people on this forum who will buy this device, without any particular need for it, just because of the hype and wanting the next new thing from Apple. LOL, you even have them justifying the lack of a webcam.

Not only that but everyone keeps acting like it's going to be something from another world. Hello! Tablets are already on the market, just look at those and make them a little prettier, run osx, and put a glowing apple on it and there's your stupid tablet. I have a 13" MBP, so tell me what the hell is a tablet going to do that my MBP can't? I'll say it again, this tablet idea is so stupid and it just goes to show how the market can convince people something is "in" and "useful" when really they are just redesigning old crap and re-selling it to you.

It can light up it's keyboard? The point is that there is TO MUCH hype surrounding something as useless as a tablet computer. Doesn't matter if Willy Wonka ::cough:: Steve Jobs ::cough:: designs it or not. Don't ignore what's right in front of your face, it's a flat piece of aluminum with a screen and it runs OSX. What's so new, exciting, and game changing about that?

So there's no difference between a Dell laptop and a MBP, because they're both made of plastic, aluminum, and glass? An iphone and a motorola razor? A porsche and a ford?
Computers are judged by their molecular makeup and not by how they let you interact with them to get your work done?

Your comparison doesn't even work in this situation. Ford and Porsche? iPhone and razr? Those are completely different things. We are talking about two machines extremely similar but one doesn't have a physical keyboard. That's it.

How do you know? You know nothing about the tablet. Even the fact that it runs "OS X" means nothing. OS X takes many varied forms as widely different as Apple TV, iPhone OS, and Mac OS Server. The iPhone is just a tiny device without a keyboard and running OS X, but that description doesn't begin to cover how useful the device is and how it allows one to do things one can't reasonably or conveniently do with a MBP.
First, don't pretend you have any idea what the tablet will be, because other than your description (aluminum, glass, and OS X) you know nothing.
Second, don't be such a spoilsport. The days of looking forward to a new OS release or a new computer release have essentially passed us. Apple is one of the few examples left of a company whose announcements are worth looking forward to, because every once in awhile they still manage to surprise and delight us. And the reasons for our surprise and delight have nothing to do with checklists of features.
The tablet might rock, or it might be horribly disappointing. But Apple is one of the few companies from which we have high enough expectations to allow them to be able to disappoint us, and that's what the hype is all about.

Pricing for the iSlate:
$799 for the 32GB model
$899 for the 64GB model
Mark
People are saying already NO WAY from what they have heard will it be a low as 32GB. Most think it will be at least 64GB entry - 128GB with the high-end model being 256GB.
No one knows for sure, but that is what most podcasts that have guests on are saying the storage will start at for a tablet type of device. Otherwise, it's just a glorified iPod Touch.

Where is the tablet Beta and RC? :p
Some would argue that the first generation tablet will be the beta and the second generation tablet would be the release candidate. That would make the third generation tablet the true release.
iPhone 2G = Beta
iPhone 3G = RC
iPhone 3GS = true release
While I am looking forward to Apple's announcement of whatever it will be on Wednesday the 27th, it is doubtless that I will sit out from buying the first tablet.
As an AAPL stockholder, I am glad that many others are eager to purchase new products as it drives up shareholder value.

I agree and I think the iSlate will make it worse. My wife already spends more time on the iPhone at restaurants and before and after sex than she does "eating".
Therefore Steve is evil and should be eliminated.
Which means what? That you are boring?
Apple: "We had this excellent product nearly ready for release, but the buzz rose to such a level that the bar was raised to where our product could only be seen as a massive disappointment. So you can all blame it on yourselves. We got nothing, sorry."
Which means that Apple is actually listening. Wow.
Surely Apple learned someone from its iPod Touch mistakes and thus it will have two camera's; One on the back and one on the front.
And about the new hip... it is called "swipes". What else is new.

SSD's are different from the Flash storage the iPods use. They are far cheaper which is why you see 64GB in the touch. A 64GB SSD is still very expensive at around $200. That being said, I don't see much purpose in a 256GB hard drive for something that is meant for books. If it is a computer that's different.

Expected. Why on earth would people think that the 5 megapixel camera is destined for the Tablet? It's obvious that Apple is trying to keep this thing as a budget "Mac", cheaper than the Macbook as it has probably not even a Webcam, but I still don't know what on earth this device will actually serve to us consumers. I'll just wait till it's announced, then I can decide on whether to buy this.

Onl if you have a slate glued to your hands, which given that it's going to weigh more and be bigger than an iPhone is unlikely.

I really doubt Apple would fail to put a camera on the new tablet. Apple is a company that seems to put a big importance on photography and video capturing and loves cramming a camera into anything. Hell, even the iPod nano has a camera.
I don't agree they've put an emphasis on photography lately. Sure the original iPhone had to have a token camera (like every other phone), but then they didn't upgrade it one bit in the 3G (not until 3GS).
I think the tablet will sell well for applications in classrooms and hospitals where a camera could be a distraction or liability, respectfully.
I agree with the idea of them perhaps allowing "camera-tethering" from the iPhone, or even just a plug in peripheral webcam for those few who would be using it for video chats, which are overrated anyway. (everybody wave...)

[SIZE=1]I think the tablet will sell well for applications in classrooms and hospitals where a camera could be a distraction or liability, respectfully.
Have any of you people ever used a tablet? Miscrosoft thought they'd sell well with students and doctors. So they advised MFG's to build overpriced and underpowered lame-o systems for them. Some hospitals found them somewhat handy. Fewer students did. Instead, illustrators, cad draftsmen, designers, photographers, graphic artists, modellers and anyone who works with non-typed geometry struggled to get their huge lummox programs to run on the overburdened windows tablet editions. Most of which wouldn't run pressure-sensitive due to sloppy and worse drivers, OS shortcomings, and laziness on Adobe & Autodesk's part, and many which wouldn't run at all due to the underpowered specs.
Hopefully, Apples head has not been too far up it's dark side of the moon to grasp why tablets failed the first fifty times, in the windows world, and get this right. If they do, they'll be appealing to:
Illustrators
Cad Draftsmen
Designers
Photographers
Graphic Artists
Modellers
Doctors
Students
Gearheads
A greater market than the Macbook Air is catering to, I'd wager. We're already used to paying thousands just for tablet monitors, which are heavy and non-portable, and in enough quantities to keep Wacom advertising on every website on the net.
...but that's assuming they do it right, and not make a freakin 10" ipod touch you can't run any useful applications on.
...& that's assuming they do it at all.

Yeah, making it a 10" hand-held portable video conferencing device just by adding a simple quarter inch camera would be SO STUPID!
WHY DO PEOPLE MAKE SUCH STUPID REMARKS???:confused::confused:
This really is all about Apple's 20th century American money making scheme. Make is worse than it can be, then release upgrades one at a time and the suckers will keep buying. I'm so sick of this.
EVERY electronics product is thus. My prosumer DSLR continues to improve to the point that I must continue upgrading to keep up with Mr./Ms. Jones.
A camera in the new Apple product would aid people who provide estimates to their (NOT there) customers or who want to share images with friends. There is more to the functionality than videoconferencing. However, any camera today would be autofocus; and with face detection technology, it will be able to follow a subject who is speaking to others.
Has anyone suggested whether the new Apple product will be rigid or flexible? What happens if it is knocked off the user's lap or off a table?

If memory cards/modules are interchangeable as they are in myTouch and DSLRs, then this would be beneficial. Otherwise, that would be a good reason not to buy this new Apple product when it first appears.
If anyone thinks a device such as is being discussed here won't be used/useful for computing, then they should rethink their idea of what people do when they are able to connect to the internet. I can connect with myTouch  but it's not so easy with such a small screen to interact with the internet. But then, I am not using a bunch of apps, either.

Re-direct that nonsense at yourself. This device is primarily for MOBILE situations, and unless you've lived in a cave for 3 years, you're aware of the fact that its completely inconceivable for AT&T to carry such a product and support video conferencing on their network. Apple is not going to add a WiFi only feature in 2010, as they will look like 2007/iPhone.
It's simply not happening, because it can't be great. That's Apple's usual approach, and its also common sense.
Video chat is also worthless on a tablet.

- 10.1" LCD screen with multitouch
- 1gb of RAM
- dual core cortex arm 9 processor
- 32 gb ssd
- an hybrid o.s beetween mac osx and iPhone gui, closer to aniPhone than a standard macs but with full integration of iTunes, an evolved app store and a cool gui+hardware idea for text imput.
- some online storage disk could be possible for the new iLife suite (10/20gb)
- Bluetooth, wifi, no 3G, no stylus, nor USB or any port at all (no minidisplay)

It becomes rather amusing if you follow the trajectory of speculation about Apple's slate over these past couple of weeks. The speculators seem to have no concept that allows the slate to be more than one thing.
Currently, that one thing is a cell phone of some sort. Any and all things must be done over a mobile network. Recently, the slate was a new computer. With enough gestures, the developer community will port their apps to the slate so that we can edit our photographs, videos, and write the Great American Novel on the slate. Back when the rumors first started rolling, the slate was a electronic reader. Nothing Apple could do would be better than what the Amazon Kindle already provides, but Apple fanboys would buy its slates anyway just because they have the Apple logo.
Who knows where the speculation will take us tomorrow?

details like this (along with all the ATT flack) is part of why I think all the dual GSM/CDMA in the iphone talk was about the wrong iphone os device. i think that it's the tablet. great gateway device to lure in even those that didn't want to switch to ATT.
my only hope is that it is optional. cause I live in an area with city sponsored wifi so between that, home, work etc I'm covered for getting online. without paying another $25-40 a month to anyone

i have to disagree. I haven't seen anything in the last couple of weeks or anytime that anyone with half a brain has said the slate would be one thing. it has been from day one a multifunctional device. just like the iphone and the ipod touch.
the whole ereader thing is just one of those functions and because it comes with several other 'devices' it will most likely beat the Kindle in terms of hardware. Content is where this game will likely be determined
