I just spoke to a friend that received his new 13" MBP BTO with 4GB RAM from Apple's shipping facility in the Netherlands. And guess what was also BTO? He found several porn videos in his Documents-folder. He doesn't want to fuss about it so he'll just delete and forget it, but, wow Apple, great technicians you got there!

No, he's pretty open about it so he wouldn't have a problem admitting it was his.

The new MacBook Pro, now with iPorn.. Yeah, sound like something Apple would do.. :D

Don't know, I didn't ask. But anyway, as far as I know it isn't hard to make that video display after a reboot.

thegoldenmackid: why would he/I lie? I'm the one who made him switch, so I wouldn't gain anything from it, and I'm not here to bash Apple. And he didn't make any fuss about it, he just thought it was strange and unprofessional. Think about it, why shouldn't you believe?

Personally, I would've called Apple and said something. Say that MacBook was for a child and he/she opened it by chance. I think it's highly inappropriate if it did happen.

Anyway. Please post the address of that place in the Netherlands, if they give away free porn, I think I will order my next Mac from there. :)

No they don't, shipping to Scandinavia is from the Netherlands. I've had an iBook G4, MB, MBP and every other order from the Apple Store shipped from the Netherlands, Eindhoven I think. So obviously if you want a different first boot video, order from the Apple Store for Norway, Denmark or Sweden. :P

I also don't believe this, sorry.
Why would someone at the factory do this.
If it was done to be a joke I'm sure they would have been more creative. Like have it displayed in place of the start up video.
I also don't think the employes have the free time to surf the web for porn.

Well, can't you see the file properties to determine when it was created?

If you saw it in the trash, he prolly loaded it and deleted it himself. I doubt they installed porn on his drive. Sounds like your friend told you a white lie; too embarrassed to admit it.

Maybe in the US, in Scandinavia you couldn't get a cent. Maybe a concerned AppleCare employee at the other end of the line, who would say something like "oh, sorry, our techs would never do such a thing..." :p

That's because a tech wouldn't do something like this.

edit:

if all Apple did was upgrade the RAM to 4GB, then there was no need to boot up the machine. Why would the tech go through all the trouble of CREATING A USER and downloading porn?

When your friend got the machine, he would've created a new account for himself.. meaning there would be no data whatsoever on his account.. wanna know what that means? no files... and wanna know what that means? no porn.

Someone lock this nonsense.

I also call a lie. Not you because you were tricked by your friend. It's highly unlikely because the first time you boot up a Mac, you will see a "Welcome" screen that begins with the video saying "Welcome" in different languages. There are ways to get around this, put some porn in the Documents folder, and make it re-do the "Welcome" screen. But most people (I really mean almost ALL people) don't know how to.

Also, your friend seems to avoid the topic. He draws attention away from the fact that it's porn on his computer and that the porn in question is from Apple, not from him. His answers are shouting "I'm hiding something".

Anyways, I'm not sure about the entire manufacturing process of an Apple product, but I do know that an employee would never have enough time to open the box, unbox the product, go through the "Welcome" screen setup, load some porn, undo the entire "Welcome" screen stuff, make it seem like it was the first boot and then re-box the product perfectly without being caught or suspicion from upper management.

Also, if an employee did in fact do this, it would show in the browser history. Again, let me guess the browser history was erased or reset so you can't tell right? Just like you deleted the porn files without seeing where it originated as pointed out by a previous post. Everything you or your friend can do to verify that the porn did come from the manufacturer/employee is avoided, unable to do, or can't do.

No they don't!

Aside from my Mac Pro (which was BTO in Cork) everything I ever ordered from Apple was delivered by TNT directly from the Netherlands.

Anyway, I actually don't believe that porn story.

If it was a refurbished computer that MIGHT be possible (I highly doubt it though), but I really don't think that the BTO guys run a Mac after they installed additional hardware.

And even if they do so, after creating a new user account (which is the only possibility to get your Mac starting the first time), every data from previous users is not accessible!

Nice try! :D

I believe him. Which is funny because I think everything on MacRumors is a troll.

But he's really not trying to fight or get attention, and he's not speculated at all, or tried to make a bigger case. He just stated what happened. A troll wants a reaction, and usually wants to get a rise out of people. This guy isn't trying to get a reaction, and has tried to calm down the strong reactions.

And why isn't it possible? I don't know how it happened, but I don't know anything about what a MacBook goes through before shipping. And a year or so ago there was that story where the iPhone was shipped with a photo on the photo roll.

Unusual, sure. Weird, absolutely. Unlikely, definitely. Possible? Yep.

Mad rep to jbuk. Anyone here who knows anything about how nix systems work knows it's easily possible. I can think of a million ways to do it without much trouble at all. BTW if the above was the methodology, it should be replicated on each new user. It's even conceivable that it could be set to download to that directory on login. You could even script it to download the contents of any hosted directory out there, containing whatever including an runme.app with a nice apple icon to, you know, make it look legit. Just saying...

Ever hear of disgruntled employees? People do crazy things, especially in the Netherlands ;) Regardless, in order to happen it would have to happen on purpose.

I'm not saying I believe it happened, but saying it's not possible based on browser history, user account setup, so on and so fourth is simply not valid line of thought. You know you can download files with something besides safari right?

OP - Tip for your friend, when weird things come on a freshly ordered system a good thing to do is wipe and install fresh, just to be safe.

As for accounts on the iPhone, it's BSD based as well, meaning it's account based just like anything nix. So how exactly is it different?
