What is a "bank"?

My iMac (2008, 24" cheap version) sometimes beeps during startup (not always). It beeps 2 times before a pause, and then 3 beeps, pause, 3 beeps, pause, etc. etc.

I've found out that this means that it has "no good banks". I have a suspicion that this is also the cause for my random gray screens of death.

The problem is, i have no idea what a "bank" is. It's probably something everyone knows but me :p.

So, does anyone know what it is?

You mean RAM? I had a feeling that was it.

But no, i haven't changed a thing in the computer, ever. Do I have to replace something? My warranty is expired, and I don't have AppleCare, sadly :(

Yes, RAM. (Random Access Memory)

Well, if it is faulty ram, you're lucky, because it's simple to replace. And it's very cheap now anyway.

Maybe first try removing the RAM entirely, and the reseating the chips.

If that does not give you a long term solution, you can order some additional RAM (I would upgrade to 4GB if I were you) and try that.

might be an idea to reseat the ram. if theres any dust in there then get rid of it.

cant suggest anything else as don't have an intel imac so never seen the ram install process - easy or difficult as it might be.

I will try to take out the ram and putting it back in tomorrow. It's 10:30 PM here, and i really don't want to fight with this any more today :p

Btw, if I do take out/replace the RAM, is my warranty still valid? I just found out that there is a 2 year warranty and not the American 1 year (I live in Denmark).

Yup. That's an Apple website I linked you to. That is user installable RAM.

Also, I don't normally do it the way that Apple describes (placing the mac face down). I normally just bring it close to the edge of a table, and tilt the screen up.

As for placing it face down, i was thinking the same thing. Although, don't you risk that it will all just fall out? Or do you just have to be careful.

It shouldn't fall/fly out. When you pull on the plastic tab, you can just hold your other hand underneath to be sure.

I took out the RAM and put it back in. There was a lot of thick dust in there, so they might've been the problem.

My computer is working so far at least :p
