Engadget reports (http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/18/its-on-apple-holding-january-27th-event-to-show-off-its-lates/) that Apple has issued invitations for a media event scheduled on January 27th. The invitation's tag line reads "Come see our latest creation."

Apple had been rumored (http://www.macrumors.com/2010/01/04/major-new-apple-product-on-january-27th/) earlier this month to have scheduled a media event for that date at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco. Apple is widely expected to introduce its highly-anticipated tablet device at the event.

The more I hear speculations about this, the more interested I become...

My macbook hard drive recently crapped out on me, and I was going to look at getting a MBP.

However, I found that I have no real desire to do productive work on a laptop wit hlimited screen real estate anymore, I more so use it to watch video while traveling, browse internet, around the house, and simply store photos on it while traveling.

It will be interesting to see what Apple has come up with!

Did anyone with the premiere of 24 on Fox last night? Chloe was working on a Mac laptop that appeared to have a Lucite shell with titanium tinted metallic underlay. It had a black Keyboard.

They were also passing around what appeared to be tablets in orange. But I am thinking those were possibly dummied up props.

Here's a name that I haven't seen tossed around for the tablet:

Canvas

The Apple announcement looks like an artist painting on a 'canvas', and artists are usually 'creating' things, so maybe extrapolating both it would be an interesting name? Anyone else agree? :confused:

If so, I wonder how I could lock myself in as the first one who suggested that 'Canvas' would be the name of the Apple tablet?

I really don't think the colors should be scrutinized in analyzed...though I am interested in what hidden meaning the random color blotches have.

Clearly Apple isn't going to give any hint of their "latest creation" publicly.

Quite possible, but I don't know why they would bother to put a lit Apple logo on the back of the laptop. The expense of creating that as a prop wouldn't make a lot of sense. And Apple has clearly made a point of using the show for product placement.

The paint splatter on the invitation clearly indicates that the tablet can be used as an input device for Apple's new professional photo software that will go head-to-head with Adobe Photoshop. It will be 64 bit and all tablets will include a free version. This is how they will sell 10 million tablets.... right?

Look at the image. It looks art-related. This, right off the bat, makes me think it's going to be a tablet that you can draw on...

Then, look at the tagline. It says "latest creation" which, to me, sounds like something TOTALLY new and not an update to an existing product. Also, you could take the word "creation" and get "creative" out of it and then the whole art thing repeats again.

That GFX card is unlikely, but the rest is completely possible. (It will be a 5830 if they put an ATI card in there.) However, since the title seems centered on a new product, I doubt this event will feature anything but the tablet. Look for a refresh in the coming months.

APPLE IS READY TO ASTOUND THE WORLD AGAIN...

We all know the whole IT universe is gonna be surprised, SJ; show us the tablet so that ALL others can try to copy it in no time.

This is a momentous time in Apple's history, as it will unveil SJ's fifth reinvention of the market:

1 - Apple //, the beginning of the mass-market personal computer;
2 - Mac, the best PC ever;
3 - iPod, the best media player ever;
4 - iPhone, the best smartphone ever;
5 - iBook/Tablet/Slate, the beginning of the tablet revolution and, at the same time, the end of Windows tablets, the stillborn ebook segment and any other lousy attempts at PDAs.

We should be thankful for such wonderful creativity, leading design, top-of-class build quality, unsurpassed user interface and incredible industrial foresight. Next week, HERE WE COME! :apple:

MS IS ABSOLUTELY DEAD. AND SO ARE ALL OTHER INFERIOR PC MAKERS.

For a fun ride through redirect world, go to www.canvas.com

Also, I've been curious about this and now the invite graphic has me thinking: How can you debut a game changing tablet without demonstrating some of it's chops in a paint/draw program? Could the tablet lead Apple to create it's own MS Paint parallel? Apple does GIMP? Surely, you could go third-party, but with all those gestures to take advantage of...

So many things wrong here, but let's start with you forgot the whole OS.

Microsoft isn't dead, see market share if anyone needs any reminding.

The "whole OS" is in Macs and iPhones, worry not. :rolleyes:

And yes, I maintain that MS IS ABSOLUTELY DEAD. Economics 101 teaches you that market share means close to nothing if rentability is not there.

I like the suggestions of the name; Canvas.. has a nice ring to it. adn does seem to fit with the invites 'theme' per se.

Im just glad that they actually announced a media event is going to happen.

I do think its quite funny that everybody has preempted apple on this tablet idea.. There are alot of rumours going around at the moment.. But still no guarantee. For all sony et al know apples going to release a different take on photoshopland.. unlikely- i know, but with apple there are no guarantees! which is precisely why i like them as much as i do! :-D :D

How about you'll do paintbrush work on the tablet by blowing on the touchscreen with your mouth?

I imagine they will try again. But I'm pretty sure that was "Apple never livestreams..." But the 4Chan incident seems avoidable given how simple the hole was.

He was talking about Apple, not Macrumors.

Apple quit live streaming events in 2003/2004. There's no point anymore really with Engadget, CNET, GDGT, TWiT Live, etc. all covering it.

:eek: The picture is awful. Hope the product won't be.

How can a set of paint splatters be awful or beautiful? The only thing awful is the spacing between the tag line and the ower border of the image but this may be caused by someone making a screeenshot out of context.

Anyway, imho this tag line indicates we'll see a really new product not a new, updated version of a existing product. So I really do bellieve its going to be the tablet.

Paint splotch invitation graphic completely supports my feeling that along with being the tablet device that most everyone is expecting, this thing will also be very much like a Wacom Cintiq. Kick-a$$ input tablet with pressure-sensitive, multi-touch gesture capabilities. The idea of Apple having its own little paint program to go along with this sounds reasonable. Think Photo Booth but for painting/drawing.

Reading eBooks and eMags, browsing the web, and checking your email will be awesome on this thing, of course, but working in graphics apps is where this thing will blow everyone's minds. You know how it took Microsoft a LONG time to figure out what Apple figured out long ago... that drag-and-drop was useful in so many different ways. Just wait till you see what this thing can do.

I just asked you to wait, and I can't wait. I guess that wasn't very nice of me. The 27th can't come soon enough.

That is exactly what I was thinking when I saw the invitation. Maybe the "iCanvas."

Do you think though, that it'll have the 'i-' prefix to it? What I mean is that other than the iPhone being Apple's latest product with the 'i-' prefix there hasn't been another current product with it; that is other than the defunct iBook. Perhaps Apple might be trying to get away from using the 'i-' prefix. Next week is going to be very interesting.

It varies. Last time it was about 1am GMT (which was way too long to wait!), but before it's been up by about 11pm GMT (sorry for the British times but that's the way I remember it and I'm too lazy to work it out for the US)

Imagine being able to edit photos with multi touch on photoshop... no pen but your actual hand/finder. Touching the photo.

Obviously, I doubt it would be able to run such programs like CS4, but I'm betting it could connect to your mac, via mini display port and act as a multitouch tablet...

So you have a tablet, big iphone, digital portfolio/journal and multitouch tablet in one. wow.

That was my immediate reaction too. All those folks who have insisted it will be consumption-only may have to eat their words! As to the "Canvas" suggestion and all that has floated around it - if Apple havent called it that, they may wish they had!

1 - Apple //, the beginning of the mass-market personal computer;
2 - Mac, the best PC ever;
3 - iPod, the best media player ever;
4 - iPhone, the best smartphone ever;

And every time, when it comes to buying products, the public decides otherwise...

In the light of the short supply of the iPhone, I am sceptical about the pricing of the tablet. At the moment, I cannot imagine that it will be priced in the range that I can justify the expenditure.

Also, after half a year of speculations, I am more tired and already disappointed, than excited. I mustn't forget to put my iPhone on Ebay beforehand, though. Just in case...

The invitation graphic provides reliable clues that the product will have bright colors but be a complete mess.

:D

This is the best quote yet in the thread! Let's hope that's not the case, though.

If past history is any indication, whatever they announce (most likely a tablet, or else people will be marching towards Cupertino with pitchforks), most people on here will complain that it doesn't have this or that, that they really should have done this or that instead, why isn't the price lower, etc. And in some cases those complaints will be justified. But after the dust has settled, if the media portray the new product favorably and word gets around online that it's good, then it will be a big success. And then, by revision 3 or 4, they can finally get it right. ;)

Actually, a more subtle point about the graphic: it looks like the back side of the MacBook (not the trackpad as someone else suggested), but no one yet has commented on how some of the colors are going "outside the lines." This seems to add to the creative theme and suggests that Apple's new product will also be "colored outside the lines" in comparison to products already in the market.

Nah. If the rumors are true and Jobs has been focused on this for years, this is one of those "change the world" type of devices.

I didn't think I needed a smartphone until the iPhone came along. I can't see why I would need a tablet, but I'm prepared to be wowed.

Two things that baffle me about the invitation:

1) Why is it 'creation' (singular)
Rumors suggested iPhone OS 4.0 is ready to go but holds too many tablet spoilers to be unveiled earlier.
I was kind of expecting iPhone OS 4.0 and the tablet to be announced at the same event.
The singular in 'creation' seems to not suggest that.

2) Color splotches, dripping colors = iPod
So is this going to be an iPod event? Rather than iPhone or tablet?
Now that would cause a revolt if they merely introduce new iPods...

inkswamp

So everyone here is thinking spray paint and graffiti but I'm seeing paint patterns that remind me of an airbrush.

Curious given that a few Apple products have used "air" in the name. Airport. Macbook Air. AirTunes.

Could the new tablet be named Airbrush? If so, what other relevance would such a name have?

I had to join, i'm well excited over this...

Ok my guess...it's obviously the tablet (well i hope so).

It's a newest 'creation' and the paint splatters on a canvas..represents 'art', art is created with our hands..therefore highlighting the fact your going to be using your fingers to use the tablet.

The colours are all colours of ipods..therefore meaning the tablets could come in array of colours.

and who ever said the name should be 'canva's' i wholeheartedly agree...to be precise...icanvas...though islate is also rather cool.

In all seriousness, I'm genuinely puzzled about the splatters of colors on the invitation.
It's the aftermath of the iPod Nano commercial. :p

Do you think Steve Jobs will be the master of ceremonies at this event?

martint84
Jan 18, 2010, 12:26 PM
Two things that baffle me about the invitation:

1) Why is it 'creation' (singular)
Rumors suggested iPhone OS 4.0 is ready to go but holds too many tablet spoilers to be unveiled earlier.
I was kind of expecting iPhone OS 4.0 and the tablet to be announced at the same event.
The singular in 'creation' seems to not suggest that.

2) Color splotches, dripping colors = iPod
So is this going to be an iPod event? Rather than iPhone or tablet?
Now that would cause a revolt if they merely introduce new iPods...

1) The simple answer is that the "creation" runs iPhone OS 4.0
2) Color splotches, dripping colors = the "killer app" = secondary function as an input device for photo/graphic apps. Maybe even a new, first party app.

Obviously, this invitation indicates that the tablet will have a nozzle to spray spraypaint for graffiti, etc. They're going after the hip tagger market.

But seriously... before we take the design of this invitation too much to heart... has it ever been documented anywhere how closely Apple's invitations correlate to their product announcements over the years?

Here's a name that I haven't seen tossed around for the tablet:

Canvas

The Apple announcement looks like an artist painting on a 'canvas', and artists are usually 'creating' things, so maybe extrapolating both it would be an interesting name? Anyone else agree? :confused:

If so, I wonder how I could lock myself in as the first one who suggested that 'Canvas' would be the name of the Apple tablet?

I was thinking iPalet, along the same lines.

Not graffiti. An airbrush. Scroll up and read my theory.

Well, this invitation confirms a long awaited rumor I've had. Can't believe it's finally happening! Apple is about to redefine and revolutionize HOME DECORATING with a new line of :apple: iPaint exclusively at Home Depot.
:apple: iPaint features...

Revolutionary spray paint can design with Apple's signature one-button
One-coat paint is environmentally-safe, no-fumes, no-mess
Glossy finish (matte finish available for additional $50)
One impossibly small can paints a whole room!
1-year AppleCare warranty against fading (cracking, bulging, peeling and customer misuse exclused) Additional 2-years of AppleCare can be purchased for an additional charge.
Use all those :apple: stickers you've saved as iStencils to give your room that iconic Apple branding that screams, "I've got style!"

It's MacPaint X!!!!

Yes!! Finally!!!!! MACPAINT REBORN!

On a serious note I wonder if the paint splatters hint at some kind of painting and artwork software? Could be a cool feature.

I don't think the tablet will be e-reader targeted like first assumed. I think it will be for the artsy type. The new iLife will feature a graphic program that can be really utilized on the tablet.

This is what I'm saying people! Wednesday will bring not only new equipment, but new software!

Really?Which Apple products have not been"right"in the first and second versions?

In addition to products Stella mentioned, there are often manufacturing problems, bugs, or things missing in the first revision or two of products.

The new 27" iMac comes to mind in terms of hardware problems. I'm sure it will be a great addition to the iMac line, but a lot of people had screen and other issues.

It wasn't until OS X hit 10.2 or 10.3 that most people considered it ready for prime time (and some push that even later).

Some would argue that the iPhone wasn't "right" the first time (no App Store for the original iPhone, for example; no Push until the 3rd time around).

Some people think that .Mac turned MobileMe still isn't quite right.

And of course, if Apple had gotten the Newton right, then there probably wouldn't be an event on the 27th! (Or it'd be an event to launch a new Newton!)

Apple gets a lot of things right. I've never owned anything other than a Mac, I've owned several iPods, and I love my iPhone. But sometimes it takes time for them to turn genius into (near) perfection.

It will be interesting to see how Apple reinvents the tablet because the tablet device is plagued with issues.

1) Too small and it isn't enough of upgrade over an iphone. Too big and it isn't any more portable than a Macbook.

2) WiFi only or 3g? 4G? If the tablet is wiFi only then it won't have full time connectivity. If it has cellular connectivity then that will mean another cell contract and more carrier issues.

3) Which OS? Iphone OS or SnowLeopard or another hybrid? If it is iphoneOS then how will it take advantage of the tablet form factor and new GUI features. Will software only be available through iTunes App store? Or will it run SL and be able to run any mac application.

4) Will it have a phone? Will it have a camera? Why would someone want this over a MacBook or an iphone?

January 27th will be very interesting. Either Apple will be leading the world in a completely new category of device or Apple will have another AppleTV hobby on their hands.

I read through this thread before posting to check if someone had already thought of my theory on this invite and was shocked to see nobody had.

It's totally obvious, and the product has nothing to do with art or drawing or painting or anything like that, although it could possibly be used to draw/paint on if it is a tablet.

Notice all the different colors. Red, yellow, blue, pink, green, grey and a little purple. If you mix all these together, you get the orange color in the middle. Notice how the orange only appears surrounding the Apple logo. Therefore, what the invitation is implying is that Apple has taken different aspects from many different products, and mixed them together into a single product. Just like they took all the surrounding paint colors and mixed them together to form the orange color around the Apple logo. Examples: touchscreen from iPhone, battery from MBP, software from Mac OS X and iPhone OS X, etc. etc.

The speculation now should focus on which technologies they're bringing together from which products. Simple invite to solve, really. The "creation" bit of it plays right along with the solution. They "create" things by taking a number of different parts and putting them together to form something better than the parts by themselves.

Definitely an idea that may come to fruition in years down the road, but who wants a 10" iMac? The tablet also functioning as a Wacom-like tablet input device seems much more likely.

I also like the Canvas idea, but I wonder how confusing that would get when using FCP (the canvas is the playback window for the timeline).

I've been among those who have hoped this device will be multi-purpose and integrate in interesting ways with an existing computer when it's not in floating use mode--something like a wacom or as a secondary monitor.
