Music format "Shorten"

I downloaded some Grateful dead tunes — marked as lossless — they are a format called "Shorten" with a .shn extension .. anybody ever heard of this?

Shorten (extension .shn) is an audio compression scheme written by Tony Robinson of SoftSound that can compact wav files without subtracting out any frequencies. It's "lossless"- everything in the original wav is there, so that full quality is maintained. For many traders of live music, Shorten files (shns) therefore have an undisputed advantage over "lossy" mp3-format files. A shn file made from a wav is quite a bit larger than the corresponding mp3, with a size perhaps ~50-70% of the orginal wav.

Duff-Man says....another useful tool is xAct (http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/21952) , if you want to convert the shorten (or flac) files to .aiff or .wav and burn to audio cd format.....I take it you have just discovered the Live Music archive.....oh yeah!

i've gotten some .shn files from furthur.net and they sound incredible if from a good source
