Haven't found too many people on this board with one so figured I would start a thread! Also I'm new to the boards and just sold my 5 year old powerbook g4 to get a new macbook unibody. The only add-on so far is a red speck case.

And I'm in no hurry to get one of those, this thing is blistering fast as is.

Its very fast compared to my 1.5 G4, time machine backs up in under a min compared to sometimes 15-20 mins. Only bad thing so far is I have had finder lock up on me twice where I need to force quit.

Absolutely love mine. It's so cute and pretty! And the only thing it doesn't have that I wish it did was a remote. I probably wouldn't use it often, but it would be nice to have.

My boyfriend opened mine up and sat there for a while waiting for it to load. Then he was like, "Oh, is it booted up already?"

I just bought one a few weeks ago. I love it so much. All the features like the LED screen is all I ever wanted in a white Macbook.

I am buying a hard drive upgrade soon. To bad no one on this board wanted to comment on my thread to help me find one or give me suggestions. I'm going with Hitachi to over Western Digital.

Hey guys,

I just ordered mine via amazon.com 5 mins. ago. This will be my first mac, I was waiting to see if there was going to be a MBP update before ordering. I'm a little leary of the 13.3 screen size on the MB, so I'm hoping I wont be disappointed when mine arrives. Unfortunately, I live in the middle of nowhere..so I was unable to see one on display. Now, I'm just looking for a keyboard skin.

If you ever seen the Macbook Air or the new Aluminum Macbook Pro laptop's then you are in for a treat. The new white Unibody has a beautiful screen. Very bright indeed. You might need sun glasses it's so bright. But all in all I'm sure you will love it.

The 13.3 screen is three centimeters bigger than the 13" Aluminum Macbooks. :)

I got one as a Christmas present and this is my first mac. I can't stress how much I love the speed of this laptop compared to other computers that I have used in the past. The only negative thing I have about this laptop is that Apple removed the IR sensor so now the Apple Remote is not compatible with the new macbook.....

Bought it yesterday from a great friend of mine (who is really rich...)
He sold me a Brand New IN BOX Unibody White MacBook.
It's great!!!
The Screen is amazing!
Graphics
Rendering videos
iSight camera is way better
the Mic is way better
the whole feeling to it is amazing
and last but not least
THE BATTERY
no lies around 4 to 5 hours with max everything
and i was playing sims 3 on battery power for about 2 hours, i still had 2 hours left after.

Only thing. No firewire/SD/Backlight keyboard
Doesn't matter to me. It's great and i bought it for a cheap price!

I have had mine for two weeks, and this is my first Mac; but it will not be my last. Being used to PC's the first thing I did was upgrade the RAM from 2gb to 4gb. I really don't see much of a difference in the everyday computing tasks, but in Photoshop and Final Cut Pro it is blazing now. I am thinking about upgrading the Hard Drive next but I may just do an external instead. But back to the topic, I absolutely love my Macbook.

The only real problem that I have had so far is when replacing the RAM, one of the screws was in to tight on the bottom of the case and my 00 screwdriver would not get it out, so I took it to the apple store and they removed it for me!

Regardless I would definitely recommend it to anyone without any reservations.

I love my Macbook,I have had it for about a week and will not be replacing it for a while. It's really fast too.I love having a Core 2 Duo finally and will never be going back to Power PC. :D

It does need 4GB of ram soon though.

So i just have a question for us users of the new unibody white macbook...
what's the actual max ram for this great machine?
I mean it's sort of using the same as the pro's but will it be able to handle 8gb or is it only 4gb max?

Had an old generation poly-carb macbook. Once the alums came out, figured that was it.

I love my 13 pro.....but then I did play with one, and ended up buying one of the unibody macbooks.

Very very nice. It's my kicking around machine. Web stuff, school stuff, killing time with music, ect.

My Pro is the hardcore business machine, runs my company stuff, ect.

Couldn't be happier with the poly-unibody design.

With the intergration of 64 bit in Snow Leopard technically you could use over 100gb or 1000gb, there is a limit but I can't remember it now something like 64,000gb. And Here (http://www.pcrush.com/product/Memory/230733/Crucial-Technology-8GB-DDR3-SDRAM-Memory-Module) you can buy the 2 4gb sticks.

I have spoken to Apple and they go with the canned statement that the maximum is 4gb. When I ask why all they say is that the maximum is 4gb.

I personally can't afford the 8gb, so I upgraded mine to 4gb. But theoretically I see no reason why it won't work.

If I am wrong or anyone else has any input please feel free to correct me if need be.

All the macbooks except the aluminum ones scratched way to easily. That is the Main reason to get the MBP. I have been pretty careful with mine and keeping it clean and stuff and you can see the swirl marks only at certain angles in certain lights.

But to stop further marks I am thinking about getting this (http://www.bodyguardz.com/content/accessories/6-41--2424.htm). If anyone has used one please let me know what you think.

it has nothing to do with quality..it has to do with the type of material used...

Okay to answer my question, and for everyone else who wonders about the limitation on the New Unibody MacBook's Max ram... I read in MacWorld that...

The MacBook ships with 2GB, and Apple will double it to 4GB for an extra $100. Apple officially lists the maximum RAM at 4GB, but since it uses the same chipset and components as the 13-inch MacBook Pro, it does support up to 8GB as well. Of course, 4GB SO-DIMM RAM modules are still very expensive. OWC offers an 8GB upgrade kit for $476, for example, but as prices drop in the next year or two, having that 8GB ceiling as an upgrade option will be a good thing. (Apple doesn't offer an 8GB option for the MacBook, and currently charges $700 to upgrade the MacBook Pro from 2GB to 8GB.) -- MacWorld.com

The keyboard skins are really bad for the MB unibody, i bought a marware clear and it is so sticky on both sides (everything sticks to it)i used it for about a week and tried to get used to it but when it started to stick to the screen when i opened the MB up i just found it unusable. I have another marware that is matte finished with black keys on my MBP Unibody 15" and i love it, no problems.

I literally just got mine last night. My first official ownership of a Mac was the Rev. A iMac back in 1998. I'd been using them since middle school (good old Apple IIs), but really got into in college and my first "real" job. In 2001 I got a Quicksilver tower (still going strong) and hadn't had a new one since. When I started my Master's last fall I really wanted a new MacBook, but the release of a new one didn't coincide with my need to get online, so for the past year and a half I've been using a Dell Inspiron 1525...not an inspiring machine in any way (no pun intended).

Anyway, I'm back where I love to be. That $200 rebate from MicroCenter makes it s steal as well.

the only thing that bums me just a little is no IR remote... I came from a powerbook so I did not have it before but im wondering why apple took it out considering it would just lead to the sale of a apple remote in the future. Unless a update to the pro series leaves out the IR then apple comes out with a bluetooth remote.

doesnt really bother me rowmote for .99 cents on my iphone is cheaper anyways.

upgraded to this unibody MB from a 2.16GHz C2D MBP from oct 2006 (first apple laptops to have the core 2 duos). Loving this machine so far; first thing I did was upgrade to 4GB RAM as 2GB just doesn't cut it.

- Loving the size and form factor, my old 15" mbp felt to big and IMO was to heavy, this is the perfect size and weight
- the keyboard key's are spaced apart nicely, a lot easier to type with.
- bootcamping with win 7 64 ultimate is awesome
- I can't express how happy I am that this thing is so easy to upgrade, the RAM and HDD/optical drive's are right there when you pop the bottom off, a lot of kudos to apple for that.
- for an integrated card, the 9400M is pretty beefy actually.

Only negative thing I can see is the integrated battery, I know it's not really a problem as it gives great battery life; I just don't like that it's integrated.

I just got COD 4 today. I really don't know about fps but I have not changed any settings. I did upgrade mine to 4gb, and it is amazing. Definitely worth the 100 and a very easy install. But COD runs just as good on my MB as it does on my $2000 custom PC that specs wise leaves the MB in the dust. I just can't believe how good this little MB is.

The guy bought it for his wife, and they had some issue... He sold it to me for $800 CASH. Plus It's Brand New in box, and he gave me the receipt.

So i think i got a good deal.
He bought it two weeks ago, and I got my MacBook Friday of Last Week.
So far having the best time with it.

1st is the moshi palmguard - it is a "rugged" sticker, that you apply on the palmrest,to prevent damaging it (mine was already scratech and I don't know why  )
2nd is the keepit clean antistatic gel,it is used to clean the monitor, and it is very effective ;)

It's a good idea to do any kind of protection, I personally swear by InvisibleSheild, but you have to find what works best for you. If your looking for something that will keep your MB protected without covering it up, definitely look into the InvisibleSheild or Bodyguardz

I had one for a couple of weeks before sending it back. in the end I bought a mid 2009 white macbook for £400 (around $600) brand new with 2 year warranty from a department store where it was on sale.

In a way I miss the newer looking unibody version, but it was not without its issues, and I saved a good load of money going for the older model.

Didn't you have warranty?
I have somehow an "issue" with the hdd or something..I feel this macbook slow, and I know it is not because of the specs..
After some 10 xbenches I came to one bench that showed me something like 10 times less mb/s than the "normal"...but that is the problem,it is a "random" problem..
Guess if my warranty doesn't work I'll put this drive on an enclosure an give it a 7200rpms 320gb hdd..

I've used the bodyguardz film, and I absolutely love it. I was getting palm scratches after about a month of use and so I decided to cover it.

The first application was DISASTROUS. I got cocky since I did my touch and my boyfriend's, no problem, but dealing with 13 inches is intense. Watch the video, go slow, be patient. And they say that if you stick anything to it you can't get it unstuck, but with water you can clean off the film if you get fuzz or anything on it.

Had to get my first Mac replaced for a faulty trackpad, so I ordered another bodyguardz, which customer service sent me for free since my account wasn't showing my order in the auto-renewal thing. Great customer service, and the second application went much better.

It's been on about a week and there are still a few small bubbles, which I'm not sure whether or not they'll eventually come out, but they're tiny and don't bother me. I forget the film is on most of the time and no one has ever noticed it. I'd definitely recommend it.

She has an 08 white macbook, hers looks brand new and its in the same environment mine will be in so I'll assume I'll be okay, sorry about your luck though.

I'm a clean freak once i get to my macbook...
anyways, you'll be fine.
Just wash your hands everytime, before/after you use your macbook, clean it weekly/daily?

anyways, any tips on how to clean the LCD?
i haven't touched the LCD, but it seems to be getting some smudges?

I absolutely love my MacBook - the keyboard is great and for years I've only typed (fast) with my 2 index fingers, and because of the spaced keys it has allowed me to learn to type with all my fingers. Fantastic!

The only problem (and it might just be me though, cause my friend has the same MacBook and has no problems) is if my finger becomes moist when I glide my finger over the trackpad to use it, its not smooth (if there's a word to describe it its juddery), only when my fingers are moist. Does anyone have this problem?

Either way, I just want to keep the baby pristine, I plan on having her a while. Between the bestskinsever clear shield, and my incase padded case, I am all good. Love my new UniMacBook..

I just got my Macbook today and all I can say is, I think I'm in love. I've been supporting Macs for a few years (and PCs for 12 years) and this is the first Mac I've purchased. I don't know why I waited so long. It's unlikely that I would go back to using a PC. I think my favorite part so far aside from how fast it is may be the touchpad gestures. Makes everything so much easier!

lol, that guy seemed to shut up when it came to the info about his... prob. a 499 special at bestbuy, compaq or emachine. But really with the discounts a 799 or 899 macbook in the long run will be much better than a similiar speced PC (I would say in the 699-799 range). I know non power users that keep their anti virus up to date (60-70 per year) and then when they get a virus geeksquad or someplace else will eat up all that savings...

I used a PC until 3 years ago and I never had a virus, but I also did not let junk software pile up on my PC like some people... I help some older people with their computers and when they call me over their internet explorer has like 7 toolbars (you can only see the half screen of a website). And they have 20 things running in the background (helpers for printers, etc.)

I think osx is a much cleaner OS that a non power user could just use day to day and never notice a slow down like windows.

Oh and as for display profiles I just tried the JC display from the original thread and its amazing, very rich colors and the display is no longer yellowish!

So you're disappointed in your Macbook because you slid your dusty/dirty Mac into a tight (and probably cheap) sleeve scratching it yourself (and likely causing the dye to rub off on the Mac), or are you surprised that when you sent it careening off your bed it was damaged?

Sounds like you should be disappointed in how careless you treat your possessions.

I have to agree. I got my new MacBook last week, I had 185GB worth of stuff to transfer. While doing that I actually really learned about the Mac and OSX. Really, I couldnt be more thrilled with my new MB. Now if I can only find a flaw, lol.....

Thank you! It is quite nice to weed through all of my old files, organize them a bit, and figure out what I need in terms of apps and customization. Even though I've been a Mac user for a year, I'm discovering all kinds of new stuff! And OS X makes the process so much more intuitive than windows.

You could get this Meguiar's PlastX Clear Plastic Cleaner & Polish (http://www.meguiarsdirect.com/product_detail.asp?T1=MEG+G12310) to remove the scratches. I recall that people were using it a few years ago to remove scratches from their iPods, so it'd probably work on a polycarbonate MacBook, but to be safe I'd test it first on an inconspicuous area.

Well, I finally bought a mac. I was thinking about purchasing either a macbook, or the 21.5" imac which, in canada, is only about $50 more than the macbook I purchased (4gb ram, 320gb HD) and, I have to say, I absolutely love this computer so far.

I'm still figuring it all out, I just realized what the option key was and what it was for :P, but for someone who hasn't used a mac since highschool, which was a good 10 years ago, this is great.

It's blazing fast. Faster than the notebook I have sitting on my desk, it handles things a lot better than I thought it would, and also the 13" screen is less of a bother than I thought it would be.

All in all I'm really happy with my purchase, and my first mac, it'll probably take me a few more days until I'm fully comfortable with it, but... so far, so good :)

haha, thanks :)

It really is an easy machine to use, I was surprised at how easy it was to set up and to get comfortable with it. For the most part, I'm doing everything I was on my windows notebook, it's just the little things that most people take for granted that I'm having trouble getting used to. Like copying files (option key needed to help with that :P ), and organizing, figuring out where things go on the harddisk (like how most programs in windows install to the program files directory)

But, man, it's really easy so far, just a few more days and I think I should be up to speed with everything I need to be.

Though... I don't know why they gave me two apple decals :), I don't have any idea what I'm going to do with them.

Hey guys, got my macbook two days ago -- love it! You'll probably hate me, but I had to Bootcamp WinXP on it (for work reasons, so I dont have to switch between computers) -- Surprisingly, it runs extremely fast, so I'm double happy.

Question, though. After calibrating the battery once, and then letting it fully charge back up, I've noticed that "Fully Charged" only goes to 99%. Is this normal?

It's a feature, leave it alone!
If your device charges to 100% every time the battery is slightly used, then the lifespan of your battery becomes shorter. Mac OS is specifically designed so that it does not charge until the battery charge reaches a certain point (<95% I suppose). That's how they can boast the long lifespan of their internal batteries.

Once again, leave battery management to the device. No micro-management required. That's the entire point of a mac!

I've had my PowerBook g4 for 5 years, and I was pretty excited to upgrade to the MBP with my tax return. I just can't justify the extra $500 for the top 13" when it's just because of 2gb of ram and small processor bump.

I can't wait to pick up my new laptop tomorrow!

Agreed. Tired of waiting and am REALLY close to pulling the trigger on a MB. Only thing really stopping me is the possibility that they get refreshed too.

Mine is horribly scratched up on the entire case and the bottom case is discolored, all I do is use it and ocationaly take it out and about,i have it in a thick laptop bag though and I even have a neopreme sleve it's in inside the bag,of and my hinges are screwed up from falling off my bed to the floor a foot away.I'm really disappointed and fear it will be dead within a year. The lid rubs really bad and now my wifi is as fast as it used to be when I got it.My first Intel Mac and I have tons of problems.

really, after the thing falls to the ground even if it is only a foot away you are blaming the mac? think you need a toughbook

haha, thanks :)

I use a Lenovo with Vista for work, and I am always trying to scroll with two fingers and browse back with swipes...why cant it know what i want!!!

I like the palmguard a lot,it is "rugged" wich makes my macbook much more "usable" without fear of scratching it,although the trackpad protection isn't that cool,it makes it loose some sensivity at taping.
I bought it from ebay because my local "apple store" didn't have it,and moshi site didn't ship to portugal I think...
They keys don't light up because I only changed the keys, not the entire keyboard...I think "our" logicboard misses the connector for the "lights",but someday I'll check..maybe when the warranty passes :P

That's the entire point of a mac!

think you confused quotes...

I had bought a 13.3 inch Aluminium Macbook for my mother, around the end of April last year. I just bought my White Macbook Unibody at Apple for $799 + tax = 884! I couldn't be happier. I worked on a macbook the whole of summer last year, so I know the experience. I love the interface, easiness of a Macbook. And, when I found out that Microcenter was selling the White Unibody's for $799 + tax, I immediately called the Apple store in my area. They said they would match the price, and I went right in and got it. I've just had it for less than 8 hours now, but I can already feel the difference. The last thing I need to do is get a good sleeve and, I'm all set.
For those interested in buying the White Unibody Macbook's :
- We have a Micro center store about 50 miles away
- The store clerk checked the Microcenter website, and went ahead to talk to the manager - he approved. I'm not sure if people know about this, but you can definitely give it a try. Also, if you buy it in-store you get to purchase the one-time-only 1-on-1 Apple in-store help for a year at $99. I did not purchase it, but for those considering that might work out even better.

student_trap: I really appreciate your review and I've gotta say I think it was extremely well-intended, but to be honest, portions of it may cause more issues than they resolve. For example the section on the different LCD screens, and their hues. As you mentioned on the other thread, there's nothing that can be done about which LCD you get, so worrying new buyers about which one they have is unnecessary. However, if you want to update the review with the 3rd LCD screen, let me know -- I'm not by my mac right now, but I had the 3rd screen model #.

I personally don't notice any blue hue -- it does put a little strain on my eyes, but I think that's mostly because of how bright it is, not necessarily the hue. There's also a way to tweak this, no?

Thanks for the feedback deraj090. It is much appreciated.

My review was written mainly because at the time that I was purchasing, none of the reviews by mainstream sites were really delving with any significant word count into aspects of the machine beyond its specification. I found this to be particularly frustrating, so I wrote my own to help others.

I have tried to be as unbiased as possible in my inferences, and although this is never entirely possible, I do state numerous times (and in particular with regard to the screen) the context of any particular issues, and how important I regard them to be both for myself, and for others in general.

Regarding my comments of the screen itself, I do specifically mention that it is still a significant upgrade to the previous model. However the issues with the screen are well documented both here at MR, and on apple's discussion forums themselves. For these reasons I thought it best for buyers to be aware of the issues that a number of users have had.

Finally, I would very much like you to add onto the thread the number of the third screen, and also if you feel my comments are too harsh, add your thoughts n the thread itself, as it has had over 4000 views so far and differences in opinion can only leave potential buyers better informed.

Thanks again for your comments

Guys,

Last night I went to my local Apple retail store to compare the current MB and MBP lineups.

I like the MB a lot, and I actually found its display easier on the eyes than that of the MBP.

Some questions tho:

- as I suffer from migraines, how likely is the MB display to trigger a migraine attack (in your opinion, of course), ie. how much of a strain for eyes it really is, and how common it is to get headaches from looking at it ?

- does the rubbery bottom get dirty really easily, and if so, are there ways to clean it up?

- I noticed the MB runs hotter on the bottomside (because the polycarbonate is an insulator while aluminium is a conductor and thus helps in distributing heat). How annoying will this feature become with time?

- I noticed MB feels heavier than MBP, even though according to specs there isn't much difference, 100g or so. Would you consider the difference anyway significant (in your opinion, again).

- Are there any other pros or cons for MB over MBP that you can think ok? (besides the regular stuff of backlit keyboard, SD, FW, better display etc. etc.)

I am sick of waiting for the new MBP lineup and would like to get my Mac now. MB seems like a more sensible option than the MBP line (old one, that is).

Thanks!!

They are not common, but they are suffered by a significant amount of people. The problem is not specific to the macbook display though but many LED backlit displays, so if you have used one without problems in the past you will likely be OK in the future.

- does the rubbery bottom get dirty really easily, and if so, are there ways to clean it up?

It does get dirty, but its the bottom of the computer, I for one don't think that it matters

- I noticed the MB runs hotter on the bottomside (because the polycarbonate is an insulator while aluminium is a conductor and thus helps in distributing heat). How annoying will this feature become with time?

The MB is actually cooler on the bottom than the MBP. Moreover, the MB is probably the coolest of all current apple laptops. If heat is a problem, go for the macbook

No

Seagate Momentus 500Gb 7200.4Rpm Hdd (http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=70f4bfafecadd110VgnVCM100000f5ee0a0aRCRD)

and 2x2Gb Ram..the thing seems so much faster (I suspect I had some issue with the stock HDD,but it was tested and nothing was found).

The bad: vibration of the hdd, the heat when on full usage (it doesn't even come close to most of the laptops out there, but it is warm compared to 5400rpms stock hdd, however on "normal" usage it is cold as the stock hdd, battery loss, haven't tested seriously but in the estimating time I used to get values like 8:30h..now I get 7:30...(I have undervolt on it).
But it is ok for me,the fast it is now I can live with it!I think that it is so much snappier now that I can easily put the processor to use less MHz and change less in Coolbook Controller...

I just bought this macbook 3 weeks ago after researching and reading up about it for a few months. This is the best notebook I have owned! I am quite critical of things but here is some of my observations of the current macbook:

It really does not get hot. Even the palmrests remain relatively cool. I HATED how my last generation macbook would heat up my hand after using it for 15 minutes. The only two things I dislike about the new macbook is 1) the integrated battery (yeah, I know it lasts a long time, but I still would like to be able to swap it out if I want to and where I want to) and 2) the godawful rubberized bottom. I bought a laptop pad and put it on that so the rubber bottom still looks good, but for how long?

I agree -- bad move on apple's part, but oh well....

I'm thinking of placing small foam pads on all four corners, to slightly elevate the laptop, hopefully reducing wobbling (from my uneven desk, not an uneven bottom), and reducing the dirtyness of the bottom -- has anyone tried this? success/failure stories?

Why are people so concerned with the rubber bottom? It's purpose is to keep the machine from sliding, not to look "pretty". If the dirt bothers you, quit looking at it. It's on the bottom for a reason.

I totally agree, I also like to take extra special care of my things. Buts it's rubber, it's on the bottom and easy to clean. Would you rather it be the same as the top case and scratch when you look at it wrong? If you really want to keep it looking brand new, try one of the skins or hard cases. That should actually increase re-sale value.

I just got mine yesterday. My Black macbook from 2006 couldn't be fixed, after 4 attempts to the logic board + a few other repairs to other parts. SOOOOO they replaced it with this! I was disappointed at first because my black MacBook was top of the line at the time and the white ones were bottom line but this new one has better specs than my Black one MINUS one thing, FIREWIRE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Didn't realize it until I got home. I'd have to pay extra for a macbook pro and couldn't do to the lack of money. My external hard drive is only Firewire compatible. This now leads me to daisy-chaining. I think I'll survive.

You couldn't convince them that the Firewire was essential to you and that you should receive a MacBook Pro. I think price wise the MacBook Pro would've been comparable to what you paid for your Black MacBook. What do you mean by daisy-chaining?

nah, I probably could have thrown a fit but I didn't. Not the person I am. Daisy-chaining: I have to hook my firewire only external hard drive to my other mac with firewire and possibly use ethernet to this computer (if possible) or get a USB external hard drive and transfer everything to that hard drive then plug into this computer.

i recommend speck or incase hard case. I use nothing right now. I have a sleeve I got from an Apple Store in Japan. I use my laptop on my bed so I am fearless of scratches at this time. I might get it covered with the invisible shield. But it can be so expensive.

All my files from my old machine are all on my external hard drive. I haven't got my hands on an external hard drive with USB. These are my current tools: firewire external hard drive, an old macbook and my new macbook. I'm trying to figure out a way to transfer the data without having to buying a new hard drive... for now. Data Migration has only given me the option to fully migrate data from the other computer. I just want the external to show up. I'm trying to use ethernet to transfer but I don't think the world works the way I want it to. Any help is grateful.

Can you network the two MacBooks via Ethernet cable, mount the external on the old MacBook and make it available via File Sharing for access on the new MacBook?

I'm glad to hear that it worked. I've been kicking around the idea of getting one of the new MacBooks, but was a bit hesitant since my external hard drive was also only firewire and I really didn't want to buy a new one in addition to the MacBook. I guess the assurance that this method works relieves me of that hesitation. Now, to just decide if I want to wait (for how ever long) to see if Apple updates the MacBook Pros as expected.

For sure the MBP will be updated, but at the present the Micro Center $799 for a new MB is pretty sweet. If you want to save a few dollars.

Yeah, the $799 Micro Center MacBook is a really good deal, (I wonder how they can do it) but, I keep having this niggling in the back of my mind to wait and see what Apple does with the updates, you never know they could update the MacBooks as well. The nearest Micro Center for me is about an hour expressway drive so it'd be a special trip. The only place we've got near here is Best Buy and I asked but they won't price match Micro Center. :(

I've heard people had success with having the Apple store price match, even if the other store is in another state.

I am having issues trying to connect my iPhone to my MacBook via Bluetooth. It pairs but will not connect. I found a couple threads from about a year ago on the subject that mentioned enabling tethering on the phone but I can't find where to do this.

Apple Stores are in the same area as Micro Center for me, so it really wouldn't make much difference. Are you in the US with AT&T for your iPhone, if so, I don't believe that tethering is available here.

Yes, I'm in the US. The thread I found from a year ago was referring to the iPhone 3G. I'm not sure if they were in the US or not but they stated they had success connecting after enabling tethering. Another thread mentioned that Bluetooth on the iPhone was only for hands free devices. Since I can't find a tethering option on my 3GS and it won't connect, maybe that is actually the case.

I was thinking of the basic 13inch mbp. when comparing prices it was gonna cost 200$ extra for the same exact spects just aluminum and backlight keyboard and SD card slot. Honestly I would love backlight keyboard, but that's it. I can plug my DSLR in with USB and aluminum wouldn't match my white car and white iphone and white everything else. Love white. and it would have been 500$ for the top line 13inch macbook pro. I am fully pleased with what I got and it was basically free. I mean I bought the applecare for my old mac, that's why it was replaced but I used it for 3 years and not a I have a new machine. I guess you could say it cost me 249$ because of the applecare from the old machine.

The $799.99 price at Micro Center is really, really attractive for me. That makes it a difference of $400 for Apple list on the aluminum 13" MacBook Pro and not enough feature differences to justify it. With all the rumors flying about with upgrades forthcoming, I just hate to get the white MacBook and find out that the upgraded MacBook Pros are significantly better or worse that that white MacBook has been upgraded and is significantly better. On the other hand I'm afraid that if I wait too long the Micro Center deal is going to end and I'll be left with nothing.

If you sign up for their rewards club, you get a 5% coupon that prints on the bottom of each receipt. The only catch is you cannot use it the same day. The coupon starts the next day and expires in a month (i think).

I ended up paying $759 + tax.

I am working on a complete review, but I can give you my early impressions:

1. The battery life is amazing. It lasts much longer than the previous "white" macbook. Basic wi-fi web surfing, listening to itunes, and ichat netted me over 5 hours. It also charge relatively quicker.

2. It is quite snappy for being only 2.26gHz and only 2gb of ram. I am coming off of a current generation 17" 2.8gHz w/ 4gb ram and I notice no considerable lag. I was planning on running down to Fry's today to upgrade the hard drive and ram, but decided to wait on it.

3. It runs much cooler than the previous gen White MacBook. There is no noticeable heat from the palm rest or base. My temps while typing this are 35C.

4. The LED display is 100x better than previous gen White MacBooks. It is on par with the MacBook Pro's.

Besides the obvious: No backlight keyboard, No SD slot, and No firewire (which are not deal breakers for me; especially for the price-point); I just needed to get over the fact that it is white plastic and not aluminum. It just does not have the "bling-factor" has the aluminum pro's.

Over all, my early impressions are very high on this MacBook!

Thanks for the first impressions, look forward to reading the full review. You know it may not have the "bling-factor" of the aluminum pros, but at the same time it doesn't look like most other laptops and it does have that "iconic Apple white-factor". An added bonus is that the accessories actually match. :)

I actually prefer the look of the whitebook to the MBP. There's something about the black keys and screen bezel that puts me off.

I just purchased one of these this weekend as well. I had sold my late 2008 unibody MBP 15 inch for a really good price, and just wanted to try one of these in the meantime, while I'm waiting on the MBP refresh (I still have my MB Air).

So far, I'm actually liking this laptop much more than the MBP I just sold. The battery life is incredible. I charged it to full charge last night, and I've been using it at work all day (web browsing, a good bit of MS Word and Excel, some YouTube watching during downtime at work today, and email), and as of right now, I still have over 50% remaining on the battery, which it estimates to be 4 hours and 8 minutes of runtime. The MBP would have had to be charged long ago. Its very cool temp-wise while running (my MBP would get very hot doing the same tasks), and is surprisingly very, very fast, despite the slow-spec hard drive (5400RPM I believe) and only 2Gb of RAM. My MBP had the 2.4Ghz processor and had been upgraded to 4Gb of RAM, along with a 7200RPM 500Gb hard drive, and this computer honestly feels as fast, if not faster (certainly not slower like I had expected), than that one at the same tasks. It's very literally almost as fast as my SSD-equipped MB Air in opening most programs. I thought I'd have to add RAM immediately, but like the above poster, I think I might wait on that.

The screen is much better than I expected, considering I'd read several places that it wasn't very bright, even when turned all the way up. I actually can't take the brightness turned all the way up, and am using it at approximately 75% brightness, even in my well-lit office.

I thought that I'd miss the backlit keyboard, and while it is a nice feature to have, I don't really miss it at all. I usually don't have to look at the keyboard at all while typing (except for the function keys), and the light from the screen combined with the white keys makes everything very easy to see anyway (using it in bed the past couple of nights).

As far as the construction is concerned, it's very, very sturdy, much more so than any plastic, windows based laptop that I've owned recently. Yes, it's gloss white, and looks like it will scratch very easily, but for some reason I still like, and maybe prefer, the white over the aluminum of the MBP and my MB Air. But that's probably because it's just a different look that my eye isn't accustomed to seeing. I do worry that the white keys might become dirty fairly quickly however.

Speaker sound quality is good, noticeable difference between it and my MBP, but does seem a good bit louder.

All in all I'm pleasantly surprised by this machine. So far, I can't really find anything that I'm lacking by having it over my old unibody MBP (always use USB to connect my camera, and stopped using Firewire devices a year or so ago). It's made me rethink whether I even truly NEED the new MBP when it's refreshed (although I'll probably still get one for the heck of it), as I see now that 90% of the time I'm not doing anything intensive enough to need the extra horsepower that the new MBP will probably have. And at the very least I figure I can play with this for probably 6 months or more, and sell it for probably what I paid for it. Apple laptops have a great resell value in this area (Macbooks with the original Intel integrated graphics still fetch an easy $600 + all day long on Craigslist around here), so I figure getting close to the $840 i have in this won't be difficult at all if I decide to dump it.

Is the MacBook your primary computer now? If so, how do you like the smaller (I assume) display compared to your PowerMac? That's another hesitation that I have as my iMac has a 17" display and I'm not sure I can get used to the smaller display, particularly the vertical size which I'm sure will make for quite a bit more scrolling.

I have abandoned my PowerMac for quite sometime and reverted back to Windows due to Uni (and work) reasons. And yes, sooo not used to the smaller screens, but i used an external LCD monitor to help me cope with that. I am planning to get a converter to hook up the macbook to my LCD monitor soon.

Actually, i am using 2 laptops now (mac for personal, Lenovo for work). Hence, both of them have small screens :(

Btw, you can hook up the macbook with an external monitor :)

Yeah, I know about using an external monitor, but I figure with my predilections that if I did that I'd keep it as a desktop replacement negating the whole point of having a portable. :o

A great deal is a great deal. Not sure I mentioned it but I had a straight trade for my machine so I didn't pay a penny for it. Mostly why I stuck with the UMB. My black MB couldn't be fixed after 3 replaced logic boards. So, apple swapped it out. I could have paid the difference for an upgrade but I don't need all that power and really don't have the money for it anyway. I'd rather my money go to applecare. It got me a new machine after 3 years of use of my old one. =)

Oh, so happy with my new Macbook. I had been using my last one for over three and a half years and I'm glad to have the new one. It's really awesome for the price and runs like a champ.

Now all I have to do is setup bootcamp on this for the couple of windows programs I need for school, and figure out how/where to get those black keyboard keys on this thing I saw in a picture on here sometime ago. That would be incredible to have.

Thinking of getting a new macbook to replace an iMac. My macbook from a few generations ago is getting louder with age, and is really starting to get on my nerves at work. Are the new ones much quieter?

I suspect a lot of the problem is to do with poor graphics support. Its such a pain that you have to spend ~£1400 (with education discount) to get a mac laptop with a dedicated graphics chip, and have to carry around a 15.4" machine to do this.

Thusfar it has been very quiet in it's operation, although granted I haven't had it very long. The only times where there was actually a lot of noise was when I was installing things from the superdrive.

If by louder, you mean the sound of fans, then it's quite possible that it could benefit from a inside cleaning. It's also possible that it has a bad fan. My understanding is that the new MacBooks run much cooler than previous models, thus there would be less fan noise.

Dude, youre using an example, that doesnt compare to one user usage. That Mac gets touched, moved, pushed probably 100's of times a day. Of course the mac at the store will look bad. I have the new bottom on mine, I've had it 2 months. It rarely gets dirty(unless you live like a slob), and if it does, nothing a paper towel, a tad of water, and some elbow grease and its fine.

Now that you put it that way makes sense. Our home tables are cleaned weekly if not biweekly (kids force that on us ;) ), and we all clean our hands frequently throughout the day. I was worried due to the Engadget quick review that showed it getting dirty but their hosts look like slobs really.

I'm wondering non-coloured shoe repellant would also minimize the dirt. Still the case/shell alleviates any doubts of cleanliness longevity.

PS: Wow, I just noticed how cool it was to right Colour, Favourite, and similar UK based English words on this MB and NOT have to worry or even SEE a typo since the system knows I'm in Canada and registered the OS for that. Even after so many years of support and so many versions of Windows including Win7 Microsoft STILL cannot get this right in the core OS; MS Office products do since 2002/XP. Minor bonus and may not be useful to those of you in the US but its HUGE for me here in my country up north.

i tried the speck soft touch case. and i dont recommend it.

it made my macbook look too big for my taste (not sure if this is true with the other cases you've mentioned, and also its not too big with the pros but with the normal macbooks it makes them too thick imo)

it didnt have holes on the bottom case to let heat through, i actually noticed my macbook getting considerably warmer.

the top case clips chew the edge of the macbook (once you take it off you notice)

i returned mine. im looking into bestskinever or maybe something else. not too sure yet.

After using windows and linux for 28 years I decided to give Apple a shot. I had always been curious but the price point scared me away. I got the $799 deal at my local Microcenter last Thursday. After becoming accustomed this past weekend I can honestly say I love OSX. It's similar to Linux/Ubuntu (obviously) but so much more polished and just better.

Much to my spouses dismay I'm smitten.

Congrats on the new MB!I love OSX as well and I will never buy a Windows machine ever again if I can help it. :) Oh and about your siggy,it's "2GB" of ram,not 2MB. :D

Um,a little harsh but ok,and actually,I treat my MB better than the guy I got it from,he's the one who put a big nice dent in the corner by dropping it in his driveway, which I think was the start of my problems.I do need a new sleeve though, and the other one wasn't cheap because I got it with my PB G4 when I bought it.But the whole bed thing,a little my fault as I sat it on the edge of my bed and nocked it off to the floor,I guess I was just surprised at how easily the hinges bend,I had a couple of iBook Clamshells before my MB and those things I could throw it at the floor and nothing happened, though ofcourse I never did. :)

im going to keep my eyes open as well. ill let ya know what case/skin i end up going with

have you looked into bestskinever? it covers the bottom and top in a clear sticker, you cant even notice it.

i also recommend the moshi palm guard, it has a nice rough feel to it thats not stick tothe palms, matches and fits perfectly, and protects...

edit: i just ordered my full body bestskinever

i don't really want to sacrifice the look of my macbook but i want to keep it looking fresh which is why i went with the bestskinever

Hi SML,

I take a quick look to that full body on bestskinever. It looks great, but i really want a hard shell (or similar). Btw, was easy for u to put it on? (with all that stickers...no bubbles?)
Maybe i will give a try.
Yes, i also buy that moshi palm guard and it fits good. (just like u say it).

is the bottom of these Unibody Polycarbonite MB easy to clean? Seeing these in the stores really put me off ... they ended up looking scorched by tar (black streaks) or they look like boogers.

Love the White unibody, added 8 GB and a 7200 500 GB drive. Have replaced the Win$ notebooks with Parallels, Virtual Box and Fusion except for running Camtasia. How can you use a single audio port to run a mic/headset to create Camtasia work. I record in a semi noisy environment and need to use noise cancelation mic with head set. On the Dell and my Black MB I had both a earphone and mic port for the combo head set I have. Worked great. Now that I have a White Unibody I only have 1 audio port. With only two usb ports, and only one powered, I'm reluctant to order a usb mic/headset combo.

Anyone have a better solution or have used one for same results.

Does anybody notice that the cover gets hair scratched a bit too easily? I bough a black Speck case after I had discovered that.

I find that to be a good thing. Makes it less appealing to thieves :D

After somehow surviving three weeks without a laptop and waiting for the macbook pro refresh, I caved and bought a macbook yesterday. I compared the specs of the macbook pros and the macbook and didn't feel the price difference was worth it. So here I am with a brand new macbook :3 I'm super happy with it so far. Works and looks way better than my Rev E macbook.

Pardon my silly question, How would I know if I have unibody Macbook?

The white polycarbonate Unibody MacBooks were released on October 20, 2009, are 2.26GHz, don't have Firewire, don't have an infrared port, have a non-removable battery, have the glass trackpad (no button), the area around the keyboard and trackpad is glossy white (not matte gray like the previous models), has a gray rubberized coating on the bottom (no feet), and the overall shape is more rounded. I think that covers most of the differences.

i now have this case
http://goincase.com/products/detail/cl57450

its better than any other case i have, its soft like the speck soft touch but it has bottom ventilation unlike the speck. it also covers the hinge area which should prevent the hinge cracking some people have been experiencing.

i love this case, looks and works great.
