You can't upgrade just the processor. You would need a new logic board, new disk drives, new memory, new power supply, etc.

yes you can with another logicboard , ideally get the whole internals of a macpro and shoehorn them inside the g5 case ...
so not a option unless you really want to keep this case and have some money to waste

From a Mac Pro to an iMac? Good luck with that...

dont know if it makes the task easier if he is choosing the internals of a intel iMac , i think the easiest option and physically not that demanding would be to use the internals of a intel mini ..but it would be easier to buy a used intel imac and selling the g5

Interesting option. How would you connect the mini to the G5's screen?

direct , the mini logic board needs some wires soldered on the graphic out and connected to the lcd screen in theory quiet simple

Everything on a G5 iMac is out of date.

Including the screen. Sell it now, as long as you can get something for it.

I had a g5 iMac before my 24" iMac. I had them next to each other to compare the screens. What a difference.

Don't throw good money after bad. If you need a faster iMac, get a new one.

interesting point , but on every lcd iMac the screen got better every time a new one came out ,so did the rest like processor , which makes your 24" also outdated since introduction of the i7

thank you apple , i can hang on to my iMac g3 , they are not outdated , they are timeless classics and therefor play in a different league ;)

Thanks to all who offered comments and suggestions. I will probably wait until I absolutely need a faster imac and purchase the latest and greatest at that time.

Buy now. The i7 is as good as the iMac can get for a couple years. The longer you wait, the less your G5 will be worth since nobody wants PPC anymore.

My G5 ALS 1.5GB, had a benchmark of 1100, the current i7 has something stupid like 9000. As the previous post mentions, the i7 will stand-fast for sometime to come. Buy now, sell the current mac or strip it and turn it into a fish tank.

My mini's benchmark is 2900 and is in another league to my previous performance capabilities.
