I live in a dorm, and our entire campus uses the same wireless network. My macbook's connection has been incredibly weak for the past few days, sometimes going unrecognized by airport. My roommate's connection (she has a newer macbook) is just fine, but lately mine will start out at 3 or 4 bars, and within minutes or seconds, fall to just one or none. I've installed the latest airport software update and contacted my school's tech support. They suggest that the connection is just weak where my laptop is, but this isn't true - my roommate's works fine in the very same spot. They just got sassy when I told them this, and suggested I go for an ethernet cord. The outlet for that is quite inconveniently placed, so that isn't an option.
I've run the network diagnostics thing, but that doesn't help at all - it asks me for the network's password repeatedly, but the network doesn't actually have one.
Strangely, the signal's also really weak on my iPod touch...my roommate has the exact same one and hers works perfectly fine.

Check your network settings to make sure you're not using a proxy, or if you have one, make sure it is in place. There is an option on the iPod and on the mac to forget wireless networks, and I would recommend doing that, and starting fresh. When you are elsewhere, at say, a coffee shop, can your computer connect with no problem? Then you would know the problem is clearly with the network, and not your hardware. Do you have a unique id or login to use the wireless or software :( that you need to connect, thats made for (windows ) :X?

I have just found this thread. A friend of mine just bought the newest macbook in white and has exactly the same problem. She cant conect to the wlan in her dorm but can connect to my WLAN which is outside the Campus. The IT-specialists said that the WLan card of her macbook is kind of broken and she should send it back to apple to get a new one. What do you guys think about it? Is it really broken or do they not want to accept that their network is the reason why it doesnt work. By the way some other friends do have macbook pros of the same generation and everything works fine.

thanks for your help.

regards,

Flo
