I've got an Intel iMac (I think 2007 model)
Model Identifier: iMac7,1

The hard drive has started behaving intermittently on bootup and it seems to be getting worse. I.e., when you boot up it will sit on the grey screen without booting into the OS.

Eventually it will display a broken folder icon. If I boot up holding the Alt key, neither partition shows up (Bootcamp is installed). This will happen as long as I turn off and turn on the machine until the drive is recognised and it boots up completely normally.

In anyones experience would you say this is definitely a impending HDD failure or possibly something else I'm missing?

Thanks in advance.

Repair your permissions and verify the disk with Disk Utility first. If that doesn't help, you may have to get the hard drive replaced

I've already wiped the drive and reinstalled the OS, no effect.
New HDD it is.

Run the Disk Utility anyway. Erasing the disk isn't same as verifying/repairing it, but yea, you likely have to get a new HD
