As typical prior to any Apple event, supposedly "leaked" product images tend to start circulating. Unfortunately, actual product image leaks are quite rare and they typically come from a trusted source or site. In fact, it's been extremely rare for randomly circulating and unsourced images to be genuine.
We had previously posted a collection of these circulating "iPad" images on our Page 2 (http://www.macrumors.com/2010/01/25/numerous-suspect-apple-tablet-images-surfacing/) which collects unreliable rumors and other news of lesser importance.
http://images.macrumors.com/article/2010/01/25/155025-tablet_2_1_500.jpg
A couple of these tablet images, however, have started gaining traction amongst other tech sites, so we are re-publishing these for reader interest. The above two images seemed to originate from a Twitter account last week. We don't know the story behind the images, so they could have even been labeled as concept/mockups from the start.
One of the images has geotagging placing it in Germany, while the second image places it in San Jose, California. Both images, however, appear to have been taken at the same time, making it likely that some of this information has been tampered with. The keyboard layout of the MacBook Pro in the photos appear to have an international layout.
For what it's worth, we don't believe this images are legitimate, but provided for interest and discussion. That said, earlier reports (http://www.macrumors.com/2010/01/21/apple-tablet-design-reportedly-akin-to-flattened-first-generation-iphone/) have said the upcoming Apple tablet will resemble these images.

The usual circle referencing is starting to appear: some fake info is posted, someone picks up on it and writes an article about it, then others see it and start posting, then the original sees this and takes it as evidence that it might be more genuine, etc...
Although at least Arn you are admitting these are probably fake.. :D

As pointed out on another forum -- the reflection of the apple wallpaper on the tablet is fine. The reflection of THAT reflection in the laptop screen isn't legit, and wouldn't ever happen.

I keep waiting for these mockup photos to be less predictable, maybe for once they could make them a higher resolution, that's usually a BIG giveaway. They could use a high doller camera instead of the cheap crap they usually use. Or maybe they just need to learn how to use Photoshop better to make it more believable.

I don't like it...
Where would you hold the device when you don't want to activate the touch-screen? The edge-to-edge screen doesn't make sense to me.
Also, no home button? No front facing camera/mic?
I was also expecting a screen with a wider ratio for some reason.

The major giveaway is the bottom left area of the tablet in the 2nd photo.
The MacBook Pro's keys, in real life, are a really strong black. For the base of the tablet to appear darker than the keys is just clumsy. Look at the noise!

The ambient occlusion underneath the tablet is too big and too even. Definitely a render (on top of a photo). Look at how little there is beneath the Macbook. Even with a curved back, it would not spread out this far or be this dark - particularly if it has a shiny metal finish.
Smacks of Cinema 4D - it's just too heavy.

i think we can all agree that this tablet device is one of the more guarded devices in apple's history prior to a release, similar to the iphone, macintosh, etc.
no images of it will be known until tomorrow.

My question is: why do we need this article AND the one on Page 2? Why not just promote the one from Page 2 to page 1? </rant>

anyone else think that would be terribly awkward to hold and operate?
Either way I'm not expecting much more design wise from Apple on this product. I think the only real thing that will set this apart from other tablets on the market will be its relation with iTunes. That bundled with a very recognizable software and some nice media playback features and you'll have their take on the tablet.
But really I'm just glad tomorrow everyone can stop speculating.

Hi, I work in Emeryville, CA at Pixar Studios. We often get the latest and greatest Apple Products before the general public. Of course with all the secrecy behind Apple products, we are not allowed to take them off of the campus. But I assure you I have seen, and held the Apple tablet and this is NOT it.

Good enough for me. This one looks the most legit of all the others I've seen.
So fake, it's unbelievable.
The gradient in the second photo on the reflection in the macbook is anything but gradual, and at the bottom of the screen the reflection even cuts off some of the MacBook's desktop wallpaper (the diagonal lines).
Throw in the stupid place for a volume switch on a device that size. The way you will hold (probably a little like a tray), the position is totally unintuitive.
It would be better placed on the front side edges (a la the Kindle's buttons).
Good effort at fakes though.

Yes.
Good because I just don't understand how efficient this could be unless it was sitting on a surface. Sure you could simply hold it and watch movies, read the web, but input on this device would be very awkward. Nothing like a phone where my thumbs can reach anywhere on the screen.
I will also say that lots of images are photoshopped. People touch things up, remove stuff they don't want in the image, adjust levels, etc. Just because it went through photoshop doesn't mean it's fake. Though I doubt this is a real iteration of said device.

Jan 26, 2010, 09:07 AM
Of all the concept photos I've seen, the tablet decpicted in this one seems to be the most reasonably and logically designed. Some people here are already grumbling about an "edge-to-edge" screen -are you even looking at the same image I am?? 'Cause it sure looks like there's at least a half-inch of black-space around the active area of the screen. That's more than enough finger room to hold the thing -besides, who knows what kind of gesture tricks Apple have up their sleeve to discern intended interfacing from accidental?
As for all the second-guessing about reflections and what-have-you, I'll be interested to see how all that armchair expertise pans out should this in fact turn out to be the real deal. :D
It's not over 'till it's over.

Ha,ha, why are so many people sweating about what it will look like or the fakers even putting out pix?
As posted before common sense dictates the design.
A 10 inch screen takes up the proportionate space it needs.
All the connectors etc. are on the outside of the screen or frame.
So, an iphone stretched, a MacAir , just the lid/screen.
That means touch screen for the keyboard, more gestures.
What will define it is what it can do and not what it can't!
PS: I hope it comes with a headband holder, so I can strap it to my head/ear to make those phone calls :-)

Fake
wide shot
reflection wrong - perpective on the left side completely screwed. Shine and fall off wrong.
Shadow is dark and soft underneath the tablet but light and sharp from the laptop
close up
reflection looks like an actual sceenshot on the screen. should have applied as screen or overlay. The shadow is actually created by Ambient occlusion probably on a flat plane. it's shadowed on both sides!
If you are going to do a exact copy of the an iphone - why not include the home button.
Personally I am hoping it's a hybrid.
Full OSX but with mobile apps.
Hybride touch and pen - handsfree wacom cintiq! With Photoshop would be awesome.
£400 - 500
Aluminium - none of this plastic rubbish.
Oh and while we are at it....
This would be a very cool home automation device
Never under stood why you can't run iphone apps on the desktop. obviously only some apps woud work well.

Why are you so quick to say it's a fake just because the keyboard is invisible?
This is the new MacBook with Vampire Keyboard(TM) that Steve will announce tomorrow. In recognition of the Twilight movies, and to appeal to the teen girl demographic, the keyboard acts like a Vampire, and cannot be seen in a reflection.

Since all of these mockups are coming out as expected a few days before the release, I got to thinking about this time three years ago when all of the iPhone fakes were circulating. Out of curiosity, does anyone have any of the original iPhone fakes to compare to the actual product we know now? It would be interesting to compare how close the iPhone and tablet mockups are to the real deal.

Of all the ones I've seen - even those new ones on the front page - I think this one could be the one, but it could be just an early stage prototype given it's got two Home buttons that are clearly visible.
As for the newest one on the front page, having the dock connector bottom center makes sense considering that you'd want to have that tablet in such a position - sitting on a dock or cradle - and using it with a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse to make it more like having a "real computer," basically.
We'll find out in 24... oh, make that 23 hours and 55 minutes, at least from this post. ;)

We'll find out in 24... oh, make that 23 hours and 55 minutes, at least from this post. ;)
Sigh. This is a known actual tablet by another company. It appeared on engadget some time ago. It has nothing to do with Apple.

Just to add a little more evidence to the already compelling reasons why this is fake:
Picture 1: if you zoom in you can see this has been taken with some sort of camera phone or similar due to the noise generated by the sensor. That noise comprises chroma noise and luminance noise. In trying to make the render mesh with the original photo, only luminance noise has been added to the tablet. If you look at the noise in the black surround of the MBP screen there is clearly blue and purple chroma noise, none of which exists in the tablet. Also the aluminium on the tablet doesn't pick up the blue glare from the display along the screen side. The colour should be much colder closer to the display but instead it has a yellowish hue if anything.
100% render job.

Oh, ok.

Nothing to do with Apple yet the Home key has a familiar "square" on it... interesting, since nobody else has such a button that I've ever seen, much less with a white square on it.
As stated, we'll find out tomorrow.
But then again...

Clearly Fake.. I don't see any use using a tablet, especially one without a built in keyboard, it would be difficult to use a on screen keyboard imo.. probably only useful to business users.. I can't see this being used for school..

Do your school textbooks have built in keyboards? How about your chalkboard/whiteboard? Your notebooks?

I don't like it...
Where would you hold the device when you don't want to activate the touch-screen? The edge-to-edge screen doesn't make sense to me.
Also, no home button? No front facing camera/mic?
I was also expecting a screen with a wider ratio for some reason.
Very observant.
The whole big iPhone thing makes no sense to me.
I'm all for a touch screen devise but the renderings and mockups have no imagination and show no innovation.
I really hope it is way more than these pics suggest.
But if I have to buy some kind of phone service to get it at a reasonable price I'm not a buyer anyway.
Tick tock ;)

There are some pretty convincing Chinese knockoffs of the iPhone, doesn't surprise me that someone else would try to cash in on the tablet rumors and use designs very close to Apple's.
But as for this articles pictures, they're cool mockups but obviously fake. The drop shadows aren't convincing at all, at the very least.

Apple has a patent that deals with accidental touches and resting hands...they have thought of everything so you dont have to. :D

I can't wait to go to an Apple store and completely ignore this "creation". I have no interest in a tablet.
You have no interest for something you know nothing about...
I'm sure you did well in school. :p

Definitely fake. I can tell from some of the pixels, and from having seen quite a few Photoshops in my time.

FAKE. Why? Because if it was real, it would have been pulled from the internet by Apple by now...However, I do hope it looks similar to this, but with an aluminum back. I'm so excited for tomorrow!

If it is real I welcome what seems to be a lack of any physical buttons ...
And the advantage of that would be... ?

The advantage is obvious - fewer moving parts means more reliability. The disadvantages, unfortunately, are equally obvious.

It's not like Steve Jobs works at Pixar or anything.
C.
Steve Jobs was the CEO of Pixar Animation Studios, now he is on the Board of Directors of Walt Disney Company, which now owns and operates Pixar. So yeah, he has reason to be at Pixar, in fact he is there at least a month. And yes, he likes to show off his new products there.

Quality physical buttons don't really break that often.
Physical buttons make - as you hinted - operating a device easier. With a physical button you don't even have to look. You can feel the button, which makes operation much faster.

Duh! All EU keyboards are pretty much alike, with exception of UK who wants to be different (atleast at somepoint).
My Dutch keyboard also has a different layout from the German one... But you're missing the point... the fact that it's a German (or European in general) keyboard instead of a US keyboard means that it cannot be a legit image...
