Disc not mounting/ejecting

Hi everyone,
My first post and am gutted to say I have a tech problem! I put a cd-rom into my iMac the other day and it didn't mount (ie no little disc symbol on the screen) and I can't eject it. I can hear the disc drive constantly trying to read the disc and then trying to eject it. It is as if the disc is slightly blocked as it tries to eject but then gives up and sucks it back into the drive and tries (unsuccessfully) to read it.
Any ideas anyone? I am a techno-plonker so please offer advice in simple terms!!

Thanks for the response. I checked it out but to no avail. However it suddenly spat out the disc last night. Not sure what changed but don't care as its working again now!! Thanks again.
