CRAZY!!!! imac 17" to pmac 933

The Architecture on the PM is faster than the Imac, plus it is much more expandable and upgradable than an Imac....I have an imac 800, and a powermac 533 and i've found them to be about equal in rendering in final cut pro and imovie. The faster bus does make a bit of a difference.

ummmm... thats because your old powermac 533 has a 4 stage pipeline, while the imac 800 has a 7stage pipeline.

Uh, what the hell are you on about?

Imac has a 100mhz bus.
The PM 533 has a 133mhz bus.

I'm not surprised the Pro line is more expensive than the i-line. Expect that, ringeldog. 😛

For the extra money to complete the PowerMac system you get a L3 Cache, which really speeds things up, up to 1.5GB of memory, a faster bus, and a damn sure faster processor. You pay for the monitor to help balance out the cost of the extras, Bubba! 😛 🙄

In two years or less when the processor and/or graphics starts looking painfully slow on the 17" iMac you'll find that the only option for upgrades is to purchase an entire computer.

The tower can and will last a whole lot longer on video card upgrades alone - and there may even be faster processor boards available for the machine also.

If the $50 savings on the iMac is worth tossing the ability to upgrade your computer - go for it. However if you want to keep the computer for a long time and keep it upgraded - too bad, I hope the $50 saving is worth it.

There's even a thread here asking about adding USB 2.0 to an iMac - sorry the only way to do that it buy a new iMac, but wait they don't offer USB 2.0 iMac. With a tower there are probably PCI card options to do this.

How about if you need true multi monitor support and you have an iMac, or you need to add SCSI, internal RAID, adding a second HD, upgrading video, processor upgrades, USB 2.0, Firewire 2, etc.

Well looks like that $50 savings should have bought you a $50 discount coupon on your next computer.
