Ripped Movies

I rip movies for Apple TV either in 720p HD from Blu Ray or 480p SD from DVD, and then make a second version scaled for my iPhone. The iPad has a resolution of 1024 x 768, but my HD rips are 1280 x whatever. Does this mean I'll have to make a third encode of these files to play at max. resolution on the iPad? Anyone have any sense that iTunes be able to handle 3 versions or just 2 (as now)?

Never mind. From the specs:

H.264 video up to 720p, 30 frames per second
