iMac 27" doesn't get past apple loading screen

Hi guys,

I've got this little problem with my 2months old iMac i5 since this morning.
Yesterday everything was fine, I Watched a movie and updated some software, nothing illigal or damaging.

Today I tried to boot my iMac, It showed the apple loading screen, with some kind of loading bar under it.
I thought he just had to do that because of the update, so I decided to make breakfast and come back to check on it.

When I came back, the bar was gone, but he was still loading! (15 minutes later). So I decided to reboot.
still the same problem.
I decided to boot from cd to see if this works, to select the startup drive. First I tried to fix the hard drive, but it is unable to fix it.

I don't care to format my mac, but would like to know if there are other options to try first..

Pop in the install disk and choose "Install". It'll fix corrupted system files which might be the cause but everything else will stay the same (all data and settings will be the same)

Thanks, I haven't tried that yet, but I'm not sure if it is the OS..
I think it's the harddrive.

But for now I'll try this one :)

That is mainly for excluding the possibility of problem is software, but I've seen it fixing some problems here as well. We'll see soon...

I''ve tried the reinstall as you said.

Tried a lot more things, but it kept saying it was unable to write on the disk or something.
I decided to format the drive and now i did a clean install.

Too bad.
But I'm fortunate I didn't do important things on it yet!

(although i have to reinstall Battlefield 2 Now :[ )

Hey I have the same problem white screen with the strange loading bar, however mine, whilst sometimes being like yours, occasionally just shuts itself down after getting to about 40% of the loading Bar.

Did you find a cure, did reformatting the drive work?
