I have two 2TB WD drives (so in a RAID 1 configuration it's 1TB of usable space, i.e. 4 drives for a total of 2TB usable space in RAID 1). I bought them in April of 09, for $220-$230 on Amazon. They've been on ever since. I use them to stream music. So far no problems at all.
I wonder if I can take the DVD drive out and use its sata socket on the motherboard to connect to an esata external HDD. The esata cable can come out through the DVD drive opening.
And the DVD drive will be turned into an external drive with USB connection.
I assume the esata speed is faster than firewire800. And this alternation will allow me to fully use the firewire on the videocam.
Is it possible?
(I have not bought my i7 yet. I do plan to buy it when the screen and shipping issues are sorted out.)
I am not familiar with imac hardware. But I think if it is similar to pc, the connecting SATA cable between the DVD drive and the motherboard's sata port can be unplugged.
thanks for all the recommendations ... I will have a look ... yeah I definitely would love to get a Drobo, more than anything I want to use this for Nuke some heavy 3D renders as well.
I would love to heard more about that eSata if its possible ...
I would say to checkout macsales.com and purchase your own enclosure and harddrives, that way if it ever goes bad, you can service it yourself or just buy a replacement hdd. Plus they look really sweet, the aluminum that is.
