MacRumors Forums (http://forums.macrumors.com/), the discussion board section of MacRumors, has reached a milestone: one million posts. The one millionth post was made by member edesignuk, a long-term member of the forums, at 5:01 EST (6:01 EDT) on Monday, August 23, 2004, in the Community Discussion forum. Congratulations, edesignuk, and congratulations, MacRumors!
MacRumors Forums began when the first members registered in June 2000. There are now over 39,000 registered users, over 85,000 forum threads, and over a million individual posts. The forums cover Apple news and rumors, hardware and software, and other topics of interest to the Macintosh community.
MacRumors would like to take this opportunity to thank the members who participate in the forums and make MacRumors the success it is.

Congrats.
But with that said, I think what makes Macrumors the best forums on the web is the quality of the posts. Informed Mac folks posting with humor, smarts, and rarely a personal attack out there.
I just hope we keep the focus on quality, not quantity. It's a nice milestone to celebrate, but Macrumors needs to ensure it's forums don't end up like Spymac...where it's 90% filler with people trying to increase their post counts for no reason whatsoever. (A shame, since they used to have a great community.)

Ok.. Time to throw something on the table..
My guess is that there are a couple of people who make a hobby out of it, to just rate every single newsitem Negative.
How come this one has (had) 8 NEGATIVE rates?? How can this be negative?
I noticed this on EVERY single thread as long as I am here.
Is it a vast clan of Wintel Spy's that want to trash any Mac news?
Let's hunt them down and go for the kill...
Actually, news can easily be rated..
good news is rated "Good"
Bad news is rated "Bad"
How can that be difficult?
Everything that helps Apple, or introduces new features, free stuff, or new things coming to Mac is good news, not?
Every feature, or hardware spec that are equal or better than the competition is good right?
Every thing that is less then realistically achievable is bad isn't it?
Everything that puts a bummer on things that have to do with apple is bad..
It's as simple as that..
But you don't rate this thread negative..
you don't rate G5 delays as positive!
feeeewww.. glad I've got that of my chest!

I rarely rate stories, but I made an exception and rated this one negative immediately. I was curious to see 1) if others would follow and 2) how long it would take before someone submitted the obligatory "why are people rating this item negative?" posting. Nearly an hour, I'm impressed. :D

Congrats edesignuk!
And sometimes people rate things negative by accident. You go to click on something, and click on the wrong button. Happens all the time. Sometimes people just do it to mess with people (as per above). And sometimes it's just jealousy.
You know you wanted the glory that is the millionth post all you negative voters. :p

Every feature, or hardware spec that are equal or better than the competition is good right?
Every thing that is less then realistically achievable is bad isn't it?
Everything that puts a bummer on things that have to do with apple is bad..
Like when Apple releases a new revision to something that's less than expected (aka G5 DP2.5s)?
Or when the new iPods came out and they looked (to me) the same as the old ones aside from a lower price tag and rearranged control panel?
I like Apple products as much as the next guy, but I voted both of these stories negative. These products should have been either revised to these specs sooner or have been more of an upgrade. It's a constantly moving business, are we supposed to be excited when Apple releases these minor speed/feature bumps after a year or two of zero updates??
Or what about those of us who are against iTMS (AKA DRM-depository)? Every time they release a new feature, we vote negative because we feel more people will get locked and be screwed over when Apple chips away at the 'rights' you have over your music. After all, almost every iTunes +0.1 upgrade has disabled something in some way--from interoperability with toast and such, to playlist burns, to Internet-wide music streaming.
I'm not saying these stories should be negative to everyone, I'm saying there are more than 1 perspective on many events.
Although if you don't think macrumors to 1m posts is positive I don't think you really belong here :X

I bought my first Apple product (an iMac) at the age of fifty. I'm now, at fifty-six, on my second (a flat-screen iMac) and I'm drooling in anticipation over the next one.
I spend many hours of my spare time just reading the Mac-sites - particularly this one. What's going on?
I spend a lot of my modest income on buying a product which I then use to read and communicate about the firm that make that product.
Is this some kind of devilish, viscious-circle contagion.

1 million is quite a lot.
Not really, considering that many posts consist of nothing more than "Cool!", "That sucks!", or some other brief pointless comment like that. Am I the only one around here who wishes MacRumors had a user-moderated forum (like Slashdot or MacSlash)? I never even get to read any insightful or informative posts because I get tired of wading through all the "Me, too!"s and whatnot.

Right anjaki. I was complicating things.
The original definition of hobby:-
a small or smallish strong, active horse: a pacing horse: a subject on which one is constantly setting off, as in hobby-horse: an early form of bicycle.
I'm just riding my bike.
Which is healthy enough.

I didn't rate it, but maybe people are jealous that their mac site sucks and so they are trolling over here. Or maybe some members here are all sour grapes over NOT posting the millionth post, or because they didn't have time to post that 'insanely great' avatar they'd been pouring hours into this past week.

It seems anytime someone does something online that others don't like or agree with, it's an easy out to declare "oh they're just immature!". Sometimes that criticism is justified; far too often, it stems from an inability on the part of the critic to understand the motivations of whomever they're complaining about.
I have a feeling that the 100+ negative votes are a statement that we come here for mac-related news/rumors, and this item just doesn't qualify. Added to that, it can be argued that it's a sort of milestone that's a little silly. I'm sure it's a source of pride to the site operator(s), and maybe to the people that post 30 times a day, but the rest of us just kind of don't care.
And keep in mind that around 40% of the people voting don't agree with the negative voters, so you've got a reasonably even balance there. The votes serve as a barometer of public opinion, nothing more. But to label the negative voters as "immature" while implying the positive voters are more mature is simultaneously arrogant and ignorant.

For the amount of posts that are here and the large membership, generally speaking, this is a mature, together, and helpful group of men and women, and it has avoided beautifully the type of random garbage and noise that usually destroys other sites with similar set ups.
Except the "drunk" post, of course. <ducking> :D

Wouldn't not caring manifest itself more in skipping the article than reading through all the comments and then replying to one in order to state that one doesn't care about the story? :D
Those ratings don't really carry any information. For a rumor, people might be voting on whether or not they believe it, or on the prognosis is the rumor is assumed to be true. It's all mixed in and therefore meaningless.
For news, it's, well, news. It doesn't really matter if the item attracts a cheerleading squad, because the goodness or badness depends on the individual reader, and those ratings on the front page aren't going to change anything.
Those numbers are light entertainment at best, there's no point in getting worked up over them :)

Ok, I keep getting an ad for "Free Screen Savers" when I pull up the macrumors.com web pages (http://register.freeze.com/(ozepgv553htn1tbjrhdows55)/index.aspx?s=marine&f=13152). Of course they are for Windows only (but it doesn't say that).
Any idea WHY they'd advertise that on a Mac site?

You're obviously missing the point - the focus is not on who posted the millionth post, or if they planned it, etc., it's the celebration of a milestone for the MacRumors site. If you read through the posts in this thread carefully you'll see many people actually congratulating MacRumors as well, not just edesignuk. It's a very cool event for some of us who have been here for a while, but I can understand why someone with only 20-something posts to their name may not fully appreciate this.

ARE THERE ANY REAL RUMORS HERE???? this is a rumor sight, I think this thread is focusing on factual info, not speculation. let's see some juicy rumors.
To answer your questions, no there are not any rumors in this thread - it is celebrating the millionth post on MacRumors, why would there be any rumors at all? And yes, you are correct, this thread is focusing on factual info - and your point is?...
I think it is important for a site (or "sight" as you refer to it) such as MacRumors to post rumors, however try to ensure the most reliability in their source, the details, etc. as possible - no one wants to read hair-brained rumors with no substance to them whatsoever, as that is a waste of everyone's time. I like to think of MacRumors as giving us "intelligent" rumors we may actually be able to rely on and that have some basis of truth to them. (There are of course going to be some hits and some misses.) And if that means dry spells from time to time, so be it - I would rather have slow days on MR than new rumors for the sake of posting new rumors.
And I also enjoy MacRumors for an accurate broadcast of news and confirmed events - the site isn't only about rumors. If it wasn't for MacRumors there are many things I would never have known about - a good example of late being Steve Jobs' condition.
If you are looking for wild and crazy rumors when none exist and do not care about factual information and news items, perhaps MacRumors is not the site for you.

I'm sure it's a source of pride to the site operator(s), and maybe to the people that post 30 times a day, but the rest of us just kind of don't care.
wow, you took this way too seriously :D
I have no inability to understand or postulate on the motivations of the negative posters. Having been around here long enough to notice trends, its quite simple and should be obvious once you see it first hand yourself. There will always be negative votes, however, there is a marked increase in negative voting as soon as someone says something about in the thread. It happens all the time, and it was mentioned and discussed here several times before I even said anything about it. So, based on that, its just a silly little bit of fun, nothing more. In most cases, the ratings don't accurately represent the overall opinions of the members anyway since it only tracks the members who are actually doing the voting.
As for the 1,000,000 post being a silly milestone, you're way off there. The more posts to the site mean more hits. What do you think keeps MacRumors around? Income from the advertising is important to keeping the site around.
And even though this is a MacRumors site, you might be surprised at the number of members who come here for more than just the rumors :D
I hope you have a wonderful, sun shiny day!

wow, you took this way too seriously :D
And just like negative voters, there are always going to be a few folks on here who take just about everything way too seriously. I think it's the combination of mac-passion and a certain degree of anonymity that breeds overly-intense emotions in online forums such as this one. Plus, a lot of the stuff up for discussion around here is highly speculative or based on personal opinions. But that's the nature of the beast, after all this is a Mac RUMORS site. It's also more difficult to convey subtle humor, like sarcasm, without the benefit of facial expressions (beyond smilies, anyway), or without tone of voice, timing, etc. so it often goes completely unnoticed -- and a statement intended to be said in joking can be taken as an attack. Folks just need to remember that it is possible to have an opinionated online conversation without getting personal.
Anyone who doesn't realize that is just a complete buffoon. (Yes, that was ironic sarcasm. )
As for the accomplishment of 1,000,000 posts, I congratulate everyone involved in keeping this site operational, as well as the entire posting community of Apple fanatics. I'm relatively new to the site, but I'm sure I'll be around for the next million!

It is their freakin site. They can post what they like, and I think they and a lot of people are pretty proud of what they created and how successful it has been. This is great news for MacRumors and a really nice milestone. It portrays a promising future for MacRumors. Show some respect and thanks. Celebrate this milestone instead of putting the site down.

Thanks for that Mr. Anderson, I couldn’t have put it better myself. Its not a silly milestone, and it does contribute to the maintenance and the future of MacRumors in general, both through continuing contributions by members (intellectual and/or monetary) as well as advertising.

This is a major milestone for MacRumors, and a testament to all the members who have contributed in many ways to the site’s success over the years – I would hardly use a juvenile term as “lame” to describe this meaningful occasion. Are you supposed to care, you ask? No, you may do what you wish, why are you asking us? If you believe this belongs on Page 2, along with 75% of the other stories, then perhaps you do not grasp the concept of MacRumors. Lastly, it is not necessary to imply swears here on MacRumors, we’re all adults (well, perhaps not all of us...), but to address your subject line, it should be obvious that many people care, myself being one of them. Sorry, but you can’t expect to carry much weight making negative statements like this with your current myriad of posts.

I'd say judging by the votes, this story is lame. Call it what you want, but obviously most people think otherwise. just because i havnt posted 36,000 posts here doesnt mean that i donnot visit it as often, if not more often than you. I also find it bizarre that every one is giving props to edesignuk. as if he did something marvelous. I guess i donnot understand the social meaning that some of you hold for this site. I come here to find out whats going on in the Mac world, not whats going on in the MacRumors Family. Maybe you guys should have a MacRumors Family page for your selfindulgent needs.

I'd say judging by the votes, this story is lame.
As I mentioned above, all voting indicates is what the people voting selected. Its not representative of the whole community.
And lets all play nice and move on - we can go back and forth all day on this - its pointless. Everyone has their own opinion, that's fine, leave it at that and move on.
This site means different things to different individuals. There are rumors and there is a large community. There's even a whole section devoted to political and war discussion. Use it for what you like, but if you don't like the site, there are other places to go on the web :D

I didn't vote one way or another on the positive/negative thing. However, I'm not that thrilled with emphasizing numbers of posts. Quantity != quality. Back when I used to participate in Usenet, it was almost universally true that the top 2 or 3 posters contributed very little, whereas some of the most insightful and helpful posts were from those who only posted once or twice. Hence, the development of "kill files" so you didn't have to read posts from those who really didn't have anything useful to say.
I would much rather the user's description (newbie, regular, 68000, etc.) reflect the amount of time that had passed from when they first registered, rather than be based on number of posts. And I'd be much happier to know that MacRumors had been around for a long time than to know that the forums have had a ton of posts.

The number 1,000,000 is only important because most of us have 10 fingers. Mathematicians might argue that powers of two are more beautiful so we should have waited until 1,048,576 to pat ourselves on the back. And then again at 2,097,152. Let's see... what year will we reach 4,294,967,296 (that's 2^(2^5)) posts?
