I sync my iPod touch with several playlists. The preset 'Recently Added' smart playlist was one of them.

I added another smart playlist to iTunes but when I connected my iPod Touch it wasn't there for me to select (i.e it is in iTunes but not in the iPod touch tab). I checked with my iPod classic and it doesn't appear there either.

To make things worse I changed the criteria on the 'Recently Added' smart playlist and it doesn't appear now either!!

Anyone else had this problem.

I have iTunes 9.0.2 (25) and my iPod Touch and Mac software are up to date and I'm using Snow Leopard.

Gggrrrr

I was having this same problem. I wanted to sync two smart playlists, one playlist had just one rule (Genre contains [genre name]), the other playlist had several rules. When I looked for the playlists on my iPod Touch the playlist with just the one rule was listed, the other was not. All the songs from the second playlist were still available, mind you, they could be played from "Songs," "Albums" and "Artists," but the playlist itself wasn't listed.

I reasoned that the problem was with the iPod not liking complex smart playlists, so I made a new playlist with just one rule: "Playlist is [name of playlist with multiple rules]," essentially creating a duplicate of the first smart playlist, the difference here though is that this smart playlist has only one rule. Plugged in the iPod. Hit the sync button. Problem solved.

Now, I realize this is a workaround and not a real solution, but I'd rather use a lame workaround that not have access to my carefully constructed playlists.

Hope this helps.
