View Full Version : Should the Mac Pro desktop be placed on the desk or floor?

Ok guys, I know this has been asked many times and I apologize for posting it again but I need to get some more opinions to where I should place my Mac Pro.
I've been placing it on top of my desk, which is pretty huge BUT I noticed that including my 17" mbp on the desk and the additional of a second monitor, I need more space! I've been thinking about placing the mac pro underneath my desk, pushed to the far back. I do own a shihtzu that does have the occasional hairball popping out somewhere random and I try to vacuum twice a week.
With that information, do you guys think that moving the Mac Pro on the floor on a carpet would attract that much more dust as to the Mac Pro being on top of the desk?

Either. Desk will keep the insides cleaner (less dust) but you'll be closer to the noise source. Floor will be quieter and more pleasant to use, but will quickly accumulate loads of dust inside the machine.
I like the desk option myself, but floor works too. Elevate it 8" or so off the floor and it'll stay cleaner.

Desktop, definitely, unless you're consistent about opening up the MP once in a while to blow out all the dust and hair that will accumulate inside.
I have my 1st gen MP on my desk, and even there it still gets plenty dusty.

Thanks guys, I actually went out to Ikea and bought a small table that can be rolled around in and put the Mac Pro on top of it and placed it next to my desk. I was thinking about saving space but I just didnt want to bend down to pick up the Mac Pro (especially when its been shoved far back underneath the huge desk) just to clean it. Problem solved!!

I was going to volunteer the same thing. I just bought a lack table for 8 bucks or so, it fits on top perfectly.

I prefer desk, even for my work Windows system. Drives me nuts my G5 has to sit on the floor upstairs next to the TV. :( Would prefer to keep things off the floor. Not only because of dust issues though. Accidents happen and the floor is more likely where things will hit and then spread out. :D

It would seem that the majority prefer to have the Mac Pro on top. :)

I guess I'm in the minority that like the MP down at our knees :) I'm one of those people who are bothered by the slightest of noises (I sleep with earplugs in my ears), so having the MP on the desk would not work for me at all. I take off the side panel every couple of months or so, and I have yet had to dust the insides. My home office has a hardwood floor, and my wife keeps the house very clean. Might be a different story if the MP was standing on a shaggy carpet or if there was a pet in the house

I like it on my desk more, but I don't have room with two displays. Plus, being under the desk reduces the noise because of the walls surrounding it, whereas on the desktop it is much more audible being next to my head.

Things I interact with go on the desk. The computer goes on the floor. I have nobody to impress.

I like looking at it, so it stays on my desk. The fans are a non-issue since I use headphones to listen to music 99% of the time I'm using it.
The 8800GT stock fan is quite piercing though. A long MW2 session has the thing whaling away. I need to silence it. Maybe an Accelero?

Mine goes on the floor. Though I would like one of those hanger things if they weren't so obscenely expensive.

Two pieces of wood, a handful of screws, and an hour of time is all you need to DIY such a thing.

Look at mono price, I bought an extension for my 24" to the Mac Pro and it works great from afar!

I've kept my Mac Pro on the floor as long as I've had it, and it has barely any dust.

The funny thing is I have always kept my computers on the floor and have never had any problems with dust.
But then I don't spend a lot of time cleaning and dusting my house.
My partners mother on the other hand is constantly cleaning her house and dusting and her computers always get chock full of dust....
So simple solution.... put it on the floor and stop cleaning your house :D

If it were only that simple. We have cats and that takes dust and debris to a whole new level. :D

That's given me a brilliant idea for Apple's new product; a new vacuum cleaner . I shall call it iSuck™!!!

I have the Under Desk Mount from KAE Corporation. Very well made, works perfectly. Keeps the Mac off the floor and under the desk. Cheaper than the alternatives. http://www.kaecorp.com/store.html

Its right next to me on my desk, like 30cm away.
Had it on the floor before, was full of dust. Now its way less dust.

One of my favorite expressions is that gaffer tape and zip ties hold the world together (and if you saw my motorbike you would understand even better) but even I draw the line at gaffer taping a mac pro to the underside of a table......zip ties, on the other hand could work ;)
