white macbook 2008

so my friend has a white macbook 2008 model.
when i boot it up,
it chimes and then the apple logo pops up, and then the spin wheel appears for a good 15 seconds. after that, the computer shuts down

any insight to this problem would be greatly appreciated =)

Put the original Install DVD in. Boot up pressing the C key. Go to the menu and choose Disk Utility. Verify and repair the hard drive.
