www.powermax.com has cheap powerbooks, if you are into design you might want to look into a Powerbook G4 or a if you get a G3 make sure it is at least a 500Mhz with at least 256mb of ram. Good Luck and welcome to Macrumors

Get the Powerbook G3 500 (pismo) is the best deal. You can get it for under $1000. Do not get an iBook, the screen is too small and they are not upgredable. There is a proccessor upgrade for the pismo from G3 500 to G4 500 for around $300.

My dad has a Pismo 500MHz and its really nice and all, but it has an 8MB VRAM Graphics Card. No matter what you do, that cannot be upgraded.

I gotta say, I love my Pismo. True, the VRAm is nothing to brag about, but everything else is great. I do a lot of design work on mine, and it has always served me well. The truth of the matter is that good design is not so much in the hardware as the designer. people were doing incredible stuff with technology ten years ago, and that tech is still good if you design well enough.
