Hello,
SOS! I desperately need a computer for school! I am at the point where I am not ashamed to beg, as I really need this. I beg all of you wonderful people in the Mac community to help a young man out in furthering his education and please consider helping me out with that secondary iMac, G3 Blue and white, iBook or PB G3,G4, or eMac you have lying around. It just needs to be able to run OS X well. I am really open to anything at this point that will allow me to do my work. I appreciate everything!
I am an art student moving to Maine in 2 weeks for college (very excited, by the way.) Anywho, I really need a machine like this to help me get through a few years until I can get something nice. I really could use an all in one and as I am sure most of you would agree, Apple is the only way to go...but at this point I am really open to any Apple that will allow me to do my work steadily. I am having to pay a very expensive cancellation fee from Cingular because Cingular doesn't service any part of Maine and thus, I would be paying for nothing. What I am saying, is that money is tight right now and I am really looking for a good strong deal. I have a very pristine Palm Tungsten T2 with a lot of accesories, as well as many gift certificates. I'd appreciate all offers and thank you all in advance.
My email is t300@charter.net and please IM me at my screenname "t300." Thank you all!

Thanks for your prompt response. Like I said, Money is VERY limited. But I am trying to sell a few things of mine as they are not as important as this computer that I HAVE to get. I have a practically brand new PALM Tungsten T2 with metal case, 2 cradles, and travel kit, gift certificates to Pep Boys, BlockBuster, CompUSA, and many brand new, unopened XBOX video games. Please help! Thanks!

You might not have to pay the Cingular fee. It used to be (I don't know currently) that if you moved to a spot where Sprint PCS didn't have coverage, Sprint would let you out for free.

I have contacted them several times and they said that I either pay the termination fee, get someone to takeover my plan, or continue to pay for my service.

You kind of have two mutually exclusive requirements: cheap but able to run OS X well. That is going to be tough to do...
I'd say the lowest thing that can run OS X is a 300Mhz G3 with at least 256mb of RAM. Will it run it well enough for you to get work done? I don't know. Machines that fit these specs would be clamshell iBook, a PowerBook Wallstreet or Lombard, or a Rev D CRT iMac. Your best bang for the buck may be to find one of the first white iBooks, the 500mhz dual USB model.
Go to http://www.lowendmac.com and subscribe to their "Swap" mailing list. On here you'll find a bunch of Mac users buying and selling stuff. There are often G3 iMacs up for sale at very good prices.
If you are looking for a lower end PowerBook go to http://www.powerbookcentral.com and look in the classifieds forums. They have iBook G3, iBook G4 and PowerBook G3 and G4 forums.
As a last resort there is always eBay...good luck.

Thank you for advice. I will search around there for a little while. Yes, I had been told by a teacher at the school that I would need at least an iMac 333 and lots of ram to be up to par. But who knows...Thanks!

Personally I think it runs like crap on my first gen 2USB iBook.....

you have good credit? and are you able to make monthely payments? if so get the educational discount and edu loan on a new (or referbished) computer from apple. the emac is especially cheap. i am a poor college student as well and took a loan on my new PB (with only a couple hundred down) and i just got it paid off last month (in just shy of one year).
but i am also looking for an inexpensive machine just to sit in the corner and be a music server (so i can share with friends even if im off at class with my PB) what is the minimum to reasonable run OS X?

You dont have to pay any cancelation fee. Ask to talk to a manager. Its not your problem is they dont offer the service where you are going. Every single thing I had to cancel when I moved allowed me to do so without penalty. So give it a try.
As for a computer, look at the community board in the area you are going, you might find something there.
Personnaly, I never give anything to beggar. I earned everything I own and got it by working ridiculous hours during the summer vacantion (70h/week) So insted offer an exchange. If you want to go to art school, you must have some art skills? Advertise your artistic skills in exchange of an old computer. That is a win/win deal and you will find more easely a taker!

t300,
With regards to your Cingular debacle...since they have aquired AT&T wireless (and their infrastructure) you may be able to get service after all...if not, other posters seem correct about you being able to opt-out of your contract.
As for a computer...I would personally go for a B&W (revision 2)...run around $300 or so, and very upgradeable...LowEndMac is a good place to start (as suggested)...you can pick up a crappy (looking) used CRT monitor for $15-$50 bucks depending on what size you want...
happy hunting...

I want people to know that I bought Pikmin from t300, and the transaction went very smoothly. The game was exactly as described, and was shipped very quickly. He also accepts payment using PayPal, in case anyone was wondering. Hopefully he'll post an update here of what is still available for sale.
Thanks again, t300!

t300, did you ever get the Mac you were looking for? I assume you are settled in at school in Maine, how are you liking things so far? Are yo still trying to sell anything on your list above?
By the way, I tried to answer your PM, but your box is full.

I got a 233mhz Rev b to run Panther and DSL ran GREAT on it.
I was so impressed I dropped some more memory in it and an 80gb 7200rpm hd.
Go for an older iMac 233, 266 or 333mhz IMHO. If you need firewire, there are some cheap upgrade kits. I am very impressed with these old machines.

I'm not sure where t300 is on this, but we closed a deal a number of weeks ago on my Lime iMac. He has received it in good working condition. Transaction was very smooth. t300 was very much a pleasure to deal with.

I thought so Bob, you should add your location to your profile. The car charger works great, by the way. I'm sorry I didn't thank you sooner.
