I have a 2.4GHz Aluminum MacBook, with stock 2GB memory and 250GB HD, and I would like to upgrade to 4GB memory and a 320GB 7200 RPM HD.
Anyone have suggestions on brands or where to buy? Anything to avoid?

I really think western digital makes some great HDD's... also Seagate is known to make solid ones as well... as far as ram, I've heard crucial makes good stuff...

I was on the same boat as you a couple days ago :)
I was researching for weeks and decided to go for the WD Scorpio Black (320gb), after noticing the Seagate 500GB 7200rpm was out of stuck. I had to return to bestbuy the next morning. I couldn't stand the vibration of the 7200rpm as I was hoping I would ignore. It's something modern laptops shouldnt have these days. So I did more research. In short...
Harddrive: WD Scorpio Blue 500GB (best bet untill prices for Intel SSDs go down)
RAM: no brainer, go for Crucial 4GB. (prices went up a couple months ago and won't go down grr)
Hope this helps!! :)

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPod; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7E18 Safari/528.16)
I dropped the WD Scorpio Black 320 in mine and don't feel a vibration. 4GB of RAM from macsales.com

Thanks, that's really helpful. I think at this point I am going to go with the WD Scorpio black 320, and memory from crucial. HDD speed is a bigger issue for me than size so i think it should work well.

Could you tell me how you feel about the Scorpio Black when you swap it in?
I'm having a sound/lag issue on my Scorpio Blue, after returning the Black from a vibration issue. I'm thinking about returning it for another drive but can't figure out what to get/what to do haha. Please let me know asap! Thanks hope everything turns out great :)

I'm thinking of upgrading my memory and I have the same Macbook. Do I have 2 slots for memory? What do I have now, do I have a 2GB stick in 1 slot or 2-1GB in 2 slots?

you have 2 slots with a 1GB chip in each. they do that because it's cheaper and faster than 1 2GB chip, but the downside is that you have to buy two if you want to upgrade.

ok, that explains why Apple said it was $200 to upgrade. I think it's $94 each, but I hope to find it cheaper than that.

I got a WD 7200 black 320gb, and Mushkin 4GB (2x2gb) or ram and all is well. I personally use Mushkin in everything I have.

I did a fair amount of research into the Scorpio Black vs Blue thing, and found that the Scorpio Black is only slightly faster in certain conditions than the Scorpio Blue.
The Black costs more, uses more power, generates more heat and is slightly noisier. Unless you absolutely have to have the fastest HDD, I'd recommend the Scorpio Blue.
On a side note, I put a Scorpio Blue in my PS3 and the noise reduction was amazing! Even the Mrs noticed a difference.
