Just received a call from Apple to take my 27" imac to a local Apple Store for replacement. The caller told me that they are doing this as a fix for the yellow tinge. I will be making an appointment and taking it in. They say 3-5 days for the repair.

Yeah you would think its good news. Wondering if they are confident in this repair or not? As always you can end up with a screen worse than what you have with dead pixels or what ever. Going to have to think this through.

Hey if you get another bad screen, make them replace. If this thing is really a transportation issue, maybe, transporting ONLY the screens they're better protected...if it's not made by the transportation itself, well, either way, they most have found out the problem and now have enough screens to make the replacements at the apple stores.

I am hoping that myself. I replaced 6 iMacs already and ended up not taking one home. The last 2 replacements were week 5's. It might too close to call but it's possible. I'm thinking week 7 iMacs should be good.

Can you expand on that?
Well, what I mean is that this sounds a bit unfair if you encounter additional problems withthe screen. Perhaps if you 'okay it' before taking possession of it, you can't come back complaining of yellowing?

The Genius said that Apple found an issue where "some" displays could show a yellow tint/tinge and that has been fixed, so if you report your display as being yellow, they will swap it out once... The Genius said my display looked perfectly fine to him, but he'd gladly setup the swap for me.
Not sure what exactly he meant, but to me it sounds like apple will swap out yellow tinted displays once with new ones. After that who knows...
Hope to have it back in 2 to 3 days.

If the screen is defective they have no choice but to replace it. No matter how many times.

I asked him if it is the new panel able to solve the yellow problem. He said Yes, and told me that the announcement of the solution just came out today stating that the problem will be fixed with the new panel replacement.

Well, I have had experiences in the past where it has gone from bad to worse with Apple. Fortunately these are rare. However, it seems to me that opening this machine up in an Apple Store for repair might invite trouble in the way of dust or whatever. Also, I have a screen that does not have dead pixels and a very slight if any yellow tinge. This is my third iMac and to be honest I'm really tired of going back and forth 90 minutes to the Apple Store. So I prefer to sit this one out for now and see what transpires. Yes, I would prefer a complete exchange for a new machine with a perfect screen.

In the past when I've had someone come to my house to repair an iMac they used a black light and made sure not a single spec of dust was on the screen. I've already got 2 dead pixels along with the yellow tinge so I don't see how it can get any worse.

I was being sarcastic, not telling anyone they should settle for less. Of course if the yellow is bothering, then by all means get it swapped.

My suspicion is that the screen replacement "program" was instigated simply to slow down the number of returns. This way, Apple is in control of the situation, having convinced people to hang on to their machines (instead of returning two or three more) and when replacement takes place, Apple stores will be able to get customers to "sign off" on repairs face-to-face.
I doubt the replacement screens have been "fixed" as such. The wait for repairs to be instigated has probably been nothing more than the time it has taken to brief store managers and repair centers on how to officially handle this problem, to avoid exchanging hundreds more machines.
I expect we'll have reports of some good/some bad replacement screens from this program, just as before.

Still no word on the 21.5 though (as far as I can tell from press reports).
Someone wrote that Apple didn't know that the 21.5 had problems, which I can't believe. There are at least two sites that keep track of reported problems, with lists of the weeks with the problems and hardware configurations. There is also a less comprehensive poll here.
This goes back to November at least. When I called last month, each of the reps I talked to at Apple admitted that the problem existed.
I was instructed to send my pictures to Apple engineering. There are far too many 21.5s with this issue for the problem to be ignored.

I was told by Applecare rep. that I cold not get on site service because I lived less than 50 miles from an Apple Store. This in in the US. I live 25 miles from an Apple Store , but it will take me over an hour to get there because of the traffic congestion in that area and it is in the opposite direction of my place of work. I promised to take the tech. to lunch, but they would not budge. Maybe I was too nice ? ;)

Huh. I just read the terms of Applecare and the part about onsite service says that you must live within 50 miles of an authorized service provider to have onsite service. So I think the tech told you wrong. You should try someone else, and point out the documentation. This is, of course, if you have purchased extended Applecare for your desktop Mac.

I live 90 miles from an Apple store. I do not have AppleCare. It is a third party company (Qualxserv) that Apple is sending to my house. I told Apple I would be happy to return the machine for a new one shipped to my door or they can send someone here. They went for the latter.

Apparently it is an option. I'll quote the relevant text from the actual terms and conditions of North American Applecare:
(ii) Onsite service is available for many desktop computers if the location of the Covered Equipment is within 50 miles/80 kilometers radius of an Apple authorized onsite service provider located in the United States or Canada.

Well couple of reasons. The time involved driving 90 minutes each way to the Apple Store. The fact that when I call they won't tell me if it is even in stock. Then, I don't want to get a screen that is worse than this one having dead pixels, dust and whatever. What's to say these new ones they are putting in aren't the same or worse. No one really knows yet that I have seen. So I'm not saying I won't do it but think I'll wait and see what people report.

Since I don't have my iMac yet (tomorrow is the BIG day), I have now brought the wrath of Apple Gods down upon me for being arrogant. I will end up with a machine that has yellowing, flickering, a high pitched squeal and an unstable hard drive. When I call Apple for service I will be told they are sorry, but they have simply run out of iMacs and will no longer be fixing/replacing. Thank you for buying Apple.

Apple provided me with 'free' onsite repair. A local Apple certified technician replaced the LCD panel on my iMac. The panel is perfect. No gradient whatsoever. However... the end result is dust/lint behind the glass screen. I spent a good deal of time trying to clean both the panel and the glass, but it's pretty much impossible to get it back to its original state. So... I'm having Apple send a replacement machine. The panel issue seems to be resolved now. The repair process (I watched most of it, asked a few questions) isn't trivial and you pretty much end up with a refurbished machine. Your mileage may vary...

it is not impossible you just need to use the right tools and do it in a methodological manner.
Combination of an air duster, Camera lens cleaning paper and solution, clean in overlapping strokes, spray off any lint left behind, and never touch the insides of the glass.;)

Yes. I've gone through two machines, one screen fix and now a third (and final) swap. I was offered a refund and then was offered another replacement. For the amount of money this machine costs (with extras), you are entitled to a machine that satisfies your expectations. A two week old machine with a screen replacement that leaves dust/lint behind (and my work area is quite clean and dust-free) is not what I paid for. If Apple didn't make such great products, I would've given up with machine number one or two.

Not to sound like a pessimist, but I would guess that a repair at the Apple Store would result in even more unpleasantries (I've had a few items repaired there and they never return in the same condition). It seems like Apple is trying their best to resolve this, and although I'm not thrilled with all of this, at least they're addressing the issue now.

So, it is not a new screen model or new part number. Interesting. How come they can solve the problem with the same panel as my iMac 27 week 5?
Because it was just a bad batch of the panel. LG fixed the issue and continued production.

question: by changing this panel, will the backlight bleeding be fixed (or changed) as well? or does it not affect that part of the screen in any way?

Since I don't have my iMac yet (tomorrow is the BIG day), I have now brought the wrath of Apple Gods down upon me for being arrogant. I will end up with a machine that has yellowing, flickering, a high pitched squeal and an unstable hard drive. When I call Apple for service I will be told they are sorry, but they have simply run out of iMacs and will no longer be fixing/replacing. Thank you for buying Apple.

I have a 27" week 5 i7 - my first ever Mac - it will be 2 weeks old Monday - everything is fine with it <knocks on wood> except the yellow tinge. Apple called me earlier this week to let me know the screen replacement was available. I have an appointment this Saturday at the local Apple store, assuming the screen makes it to the store in time (it had to be ordered). I've read some 'horror stories' of machines coming out of the Genius Bar in worse shape than going in - plus the concern of lint, finger prints, etc. on the inside of the glass when they replace the screen.
My question is - am I better off asking Apple to send me a new machine now while I'm in my 2 week window, in hopes of getting a non-yellow-tinge machine (which could have other problems my current iMac doesn't have), or let the local Apple store work on it?

Return it, while you still can. The new iMacs will most likely have a defect-free screen. Why deal with a Genius who may or may not leave smudge marks and dust under your screen.
Tell them you want your money back - not a new iMac repalcement. Wait until there are reports of better screens, then buy.

Well, if they do leave smudges, I'm sure that they'll have to clean that for you. I think the worries about a repair are a bit overblown. That said, we haven't heard back about how the repairs are going yet to know whether it's worth it.

Well at least this is the first time that I have heard about the yellow being on TOP as opposed to the bottom. What this tells me is that they DID changed the panels... but damnit how long is it going to take them to get it right. Sigh.

Apple's Replace Panel Score: 1 - 1
bizack: yellow tinge fixed (though dust and lint resulted in a return anyway)
avihappy: yellow tinge not fixed
If Apple's success rate doesn't improve, I'll cancel my current pending exchange and give up:
1. We know exchanging macs isn't likely to result in a good result.
2. If replacing panels isn't either, then I don't think Apple can address the issue.

If the rest of the machine is a known good quantity and you've got a bad LCD panel why would you want a full replacement? It's a simple operation to remove and replace the panel with a brand new one.
Oh, and since not all iMacs ship yellow, buzzing, backlight bleeding or with other odd problems as it is, I wonder how long you're going to be waiting for your confirmation. Better settle in. ;)

I bought this as a luxury, I do not need another computer. That being the case, I will not settle, nor will I keep flip flopping between iMacs until I get lucky. If my confirmation takes 4 months, so be it.

How did it go down? After he swapped out the panel, didn't you immediately check it out to see if it has the yellow problem? You could have pointed it out to him, and with him next to you immediately called Apple and have him talk to Apple Care and arrange stuff on the spot.

Good analogy! If you had purchased a new Toyota Prius, for example, and the next day there is a recall for a faulty brake assembly, they would replace the brakes, not give you a brand new car. The same goes for a faulty transmission. Alternatively, you can get your money back.
What happens when you return an iMac with a yellow-tinged display and get one back with no tinge or other display issues but it has a noisy or otherwise malfunctioning hard disk? Are you going to demand a full replacement again and risk getting another yellow tinged display? I think most people would just let them swap out the HD for a good one.
Of course noone WANTS to deal with problems on a brand new, expensive purchase.
Again, I say fix what's broke and enough with the "get-it-because-you-can" attitude.

This is a manufacturing fault which was present right from the beginning of the iMac's life, therefore the consumer should have the right to exercise their choice between replacement, refund or repair. For some a repair may be preferable, for others replacement is more convenient and for those who have lost faith then have a refund.

The screen will inevitably still be supplied by LG as they are, I believe, the only company manufacturing this particular size of IPS screens. Also, Apple only recently signed a medium to long term (2-5 years rings a bell) supply contract with LG for screen technology. Also, the part number will inevitably be the same as I can't imagine LG, in the space of a month, would have re-designed and re-manufactured a new panel.

Well I got my call 2 days ago saying I can bring it to apple and they will send it in to get fixed or take the steps they need to get it fixed. Anyway, my screen actually doesn't have a noticable yellow tint that I thought it did. Maybe because I was freaking out from reading posts of yellowing going on with the 27" screen, I thought my screen was yellow tinging too.
I think I am just going to hold off because my iMac seems perfect right now and I don't want to mess it up and end up getting a worse screen or anything. It seems good as it is.
Question though, if I don't notice any major yellowing now or hardly any at all, in the future could my screen start yellowing?

Thank you, spcdust, but I assure you I own no Apple stock nor do I have any vested interest in the company aside from being an owner of several of their products. Believe it or not, I really don't much care whether you or anyone else gets a full replacement or a panel replacement. It's no skin off my butt either way.
However, you keep calling it a "repair" but it is swapping a brand new LCD panel in a brand new machine. I hardly think that constitutes as a "repair". That's all I'm saying.

I still have a problem with no differentiation between basic quality control and components failing.
It looks like Apple is trying to sneak in substandard components (yellow tinged screen panel) on unsuspecting customers. Only after the customer complains, Apple changes the computer (or repairs the unit), no questions asked, even if NOTHING has technically failed.
Looks like "Oops, we got caught" statement to me, but it is probably cheapest this way (even with some people abusing this system in pursuit of the "perfect" iMac).

Agreed, the whole pursuit of the "perfect" screen is a foolhardy road to travel but obviously the yellow peril is a separate genuine issue that does exist for some users.
Personally I haven't embarked on the constant swap out cycle - rather I reported the issue back in December and then awaited a solution. This week the contact I have at Apple said that they are now happy to provide me with a full replacement and that they now have a protocol in place to pre-screen all iMacs, being supplied as replacement units, prior to shipping. I was skeptical that they would actually pull an individual iMac off the production line to test but they explained what they have to do on their system to ensure that this did indeed happen and they sounded convincing.
Fingers crossed that this pre-screening process does indeed result in a yellow free monitor but obviously I'm not holding my breath.

From what the Apple tech guy told me, you can return / exchange within the return policy period, or you can go the repair route. If you do go the repair route and the problem persists, they will try again, and again before a complete exchange can be made.
It could be BS, but that's what he told me.

I was told by an Apple CSR that under these conditions, they will allow full refunds after 14 days. But don't wait!!! - Do it ASAP before they decide otherwise.
Also, ask about being compensated for your troubles with 15% ofthe purchase price. This is being done discretely.
