Imacg3 Upgrading Hdd

no chance to upgrade to 500gb (not internal)
imac g3 only sees up to 128gb inside ,so if you plan to hook up a external drive, you could as well keep the internal harddrive , but a 7200rpm one will certainly help performance , just check whats inside (easy to open the bottom case and get the hardrive out and check what it is )
external via usb or firewire(the later is the faster option) there is no limit in gb's
and upgrading the ram is important, but 512 should handle everything ,no urgent need to upgrade further ,but keep it in mind in case you tumble over a good deal for 512mb module which gives you then 768 mb which makes things smoother especially flash content like youtube and no it wont play the hd content on youtube , but normal videos just fine if you do nothing else

Actually I find 512MB to be rather limiting (but then I do push my older Macs to the limit - I still have my G4/450 chugging along with about 3 extra PCI cards giving me more ports to play with and 10.5.8 Leopard - and yes I do use that for Photoshop)

ok if you start seriously using the iMac g3 then you have no choice then upgrading it to full 1gb ram to get the most out of it

I thought that you could do something to make them recognize larger HDs, but then again I could be wrong.

I'm still using OS9 because I'm not ready to adopt OSX as my main OS yet. Maybe soon though... OS9 on an iMac G3 with a custom 200GB SSD and 15" LCD monitor... lol

yes you can use these drivers available, but they are not free of charge , and i think there is another more important aspect to take in consideration when upgrading the harddrive " the convection cooling " and bigger faster harddrives get warmer usually , and there is no fan in the iMac g3 slot loader that could compensate that bit more heat for example i have 2 harddrives one is a 60gb 7200rpm one running according" istat pro "at 46 celsius or 114.8 F
and i have a 128gb (actually bigger in size) 7200rpm harddrive running at 49 celsius or 120.2 F
which is quiet hot and i guess for a healthy living of your iMac G3.. 50 celsius or 122 Fahrenheit should be the top limit unless you want to give the term "burn a disc" a whole new meaning and use the optical as a toaster
