Related to the powerbooks lowest setting for brightness and how you can't go below it.

When the brightness is turned all the way down, the backlight is off and the screen cannot be seen. With only one notch of brightness in a room at night with no other lights, it still throws out a lot of light. Too much in fact. At times, it hurts my eyes to have it so bright in the dark room sitting on my lap chatting with friends or posting in awesome message boards .

Is there anyway to set it to a brightness somewhere in between off and one bar? Some hack or something? thanks guys!

This is pretty valid for all mac laptops.

One solution is software that allows you to adjust it lower:

These guys don't actually adjust the light that emits behind the lcd, they actually increase the blackness in front of the light. This causes some blueness in the color spectrum but works well if you just want less light coming out of your screen.

A second option is to go to the System Preferences->Universal Access and set the display to be white on black. This is very effective, and also makes whatever you are doing look super high tech!
