Tempe, AZ -- A dead tree is creating quite a stir in one neighborhood in Tempe these days. Neighbors say the carved woodwork went up in the backyard of a home in the 2000 block of E. Dunbar a few weeks ago.
"They carved it, all by themselves it looks like," said Susan Wood, who lives nearby.
"I'm a little bit speechless," said Wood. "A little bit funny but probably something that needs to be taken down."
"I'm thinking it looks a little phallic," said Tim Sunday who was driving by.
"It's 8 feet tall," said Aaron Freidman who walks his dog by the carved object daily, " It's a big tree that was carved into a male phallus."
The City of Tempe received at least one anonymous complaint about the carved tree last week. The owner was issued a violation notice for having a dead tree, said Jeff Tamulevich, code compliance administrator for the City of Tempe.
"The violation was served," said Tamulevich.
Neighbors say the tree was dead and unattractive, before it was carved up. The wood now peaks over the side of a cement wall in the owner's backyard where it is visible to people walking by.
The homeowner was not available for comment right away

This wouldn't be that funny if it weren't for the fact that one of the complainer's last name is "Wood"

They could always obscure it with a ginormous bush...

I don't understand all the complaints. I'd think the neighborhood would be flattered that the tree was so excited to so see them.

LMAO. I'm at work and trying my hardest not to burst out into laughter ;)

Do we have to call an arborist if it remains excited for longer than 4 hours?

Who would carve a tree into a penis other than a redneck or retiree? :D

What a great way to start a neighborhood war against you. We have an older man in our town that creates erotic metal sculptures and displays them in his front yard. He also painted his house (which is in the middle of townís historic district) bright pink.

Talk about a desperate cry for attention.

Itís been a source of town frustration for years with various lawsuits. Everyone finally just accepted it and now itís not as big of a deal.

Although Iím sure if you lived by the person, you would feel differently.

The neighbors are protesting quite hard. I wonder if they can keep it up? It must take a lot out of them to maintain this heightened state of interest. I hope that the situation is handled carefully as we wouldn't want any premature outcome. I am sure the local authorities will take it into their own hands and ensure a satisfactory result.

Couldn't quickly turn up a link for a house designed by Stanley Tigerman in the Chicago area that the tree would fit nicely with. Original house owner was in porn business.

Apparently Stanley's been at it again. I did find something more recent, but it was a tease: need to register to get the whole story, maybe pics?

From the sound of it they complained about the dead tree and he had to deal with it or face fines so this is their way of dealing with it.

Sounds like one of the neighbors tried to stir some stuff up and this is the push-back.

There is also claiming that it is an Asherah and claim religious discrimination.

Well, nobody would ever get lost trying to find your house:

"Turn left at the tree that looks exactly like....a thingy." :D

I clicked the link, saw the video... it looks like Ms. Wood is not really complaining about it, and she's kinda cute in a soccer mom kind of way. ;)

If I was the owner of the house I'd challenge the citation and argue that the dead tree is now art and by asking for it's removal is restricting the home owners freedom of expression. :D

It's obviously a mushroom. One that the little pink fairies like to sit on and wriggle.

I like how she said "I've lived here for 20 years and haven't seen something like that before......in quit a while".

Ha!

In related news, officials in Uptight Valley pressed obscenity charges today against Mother Nature for the exhibition of obscene artwork in a forest neighboring a public park frequented by children and old people. Mother Nature could not be reached for comment.

well, after one huge snowfall last winter, I was shovelling my driveway in perfect snowball/snowman making weather.

but instead of making a snowman, i made a massive 'c*ck n' balls" right in my neighbours front yard - right in front of their door. Everything was laid down and not 'at attention' like this tree.

My neighbour went out the door at 4:30 AM for work, but didn't have time to break it apart.

Other neighbours saw it as did one of her friends who stopped by after work.

It was priceless :)

I'd post a pic, but I don't know if that would be against the rules :)

"Well, I didn't believe those enhancement commercials, but I bought some pills and...".

Actually, years ago there were articles about the entertainer Danny Thomas. He had lots of nude sculptures in his mansion's yard, classical designs. He painted them flesh color and painted in the pubes as well. Lots of complaints.

I think if my neighbours did something like that I'd laugh my ass off and offer to help. I like a bit of woodworking.

Being as it's just snow, I would think it to be okay, maybe if it were linked instead of posted as in inline image. ;)
