My iMac is running slow.

I know it's a generic topic but I wasn't sure how to put it. My iMac will be 3 years old Oct 19 2010 and it's running pretty slow. I do a lot of video editing and have 1GB of memory ( I think that's the RAM). I'm pretty sure that's not the right amount of RAM I should have for the things I'm doing but I could be wrong. I have about 5 apps open at once for recreational use and about 2 for video editing, those 2 being Final Cut Pro and iTunes. So would it be my low amount of RAM causing my computer to slow down or another reason?

More RAM. Look in :apple:-> about this mac....

If it says you have a Core 2 Duo you can fit up to 3GB of RAM. If it says Core Duo you can fit 2GB.

Hi! Does anyone know what is wrong with my imac? It just turned 2yr old last week, but it's running very slowly.

It has a 2.4ghz Core 2 Duo processor, 4Gb ram, I've looked into my system profiler and everything is ok.

I compared it to my sister's 1+1/2 yr macbook, 2.4Ghz Core 2 Duo Processor with 4Gb ram.

We opened the same page of a website & run the same app simultaneously, but her macbook is twice faster than my imac!

Are anyone having the same problem? or is it just me?

Seriously, a laptop faster than a desktop??? I can't really justify that.

take your install disk and use the hardware test that is on there to see if there IS everything alright , and the disc utilities that are on there to repair permissions , that should help (you need to press c or alt to boot from the cd )

Thanks Hamster, but It didn't work.

I've tried hardware test ( press D without cd ), and disk utilities, both came out with ok/pass.

I couldn't be that unlucky to caught a malware ay? :S

Any other idea how to check/fix it without paying for some softwares?

I am having the same problem you are. I have tried the startup disk and several different software based activities (running OnyX) to make my iMac speed up and stabilize however with no luck. Regardless I thought maybe you could benefit where I did not.

1) Go to system preferences and Accounts. There check the startup items for your user. Make sure that you are not running applications that you do not use automatically.

2) Download OnyX and run the Cleaning scans.

I didn't try the OnyX app, however, I got a new Magic Mouse, and installed the Wireless Mouse Software Update 1.0 (http://support.apple.com/kb/DL951), and somehow, everything seems to be running fairly smoothly. Technically, I think it's my third party mouse which caused it to slow down, but it's just a guess...

Hi all. I am kind of piggy backing here since this thread sees to be alive. My beloved iMac g4 20" is slow under leopard. I don't use any of the advance feature of 10.5 so i want to go back to Tiger. I have 10.4 install disk but I want to make sure I am not gonna loose files/setting in the process. Can I downgrade to Tiger like you upgrade meaning keeping all my files, setting, software install intact?
