Mac Pro 2006 (1,1) is one big piece of odor !

I've contacted many users who have this model and all reported the same. It smells terribly !!!

I do not have cat, dog etc., replaced all fans with new ones, putted new thermal compound on CPU's and cleaned all dust inside.

I've started getting headache's as soon as I start my Mac Pro.

I'm replacing it with Mac Pro 2008 this week, because I can't work in such environment.

That seems really weird. While its not mine, Ive spent hours in an editing suite with a 2.66Ghz Model and cant say Ive ever smelt anything like it. Did it just come or was it always there and has just got worse??

Hmm, i have read about it few times. My 2006 got no smell at all... (outside and inside too). I dissasembled it yesterday and didn't noticed any odour. I bought it about three years ago as new and from the start its "odour free".

I heard about this awhile ago.

I believe that the smell problem was coming from the Power Supply.

My MP1.1 was a store demo unit and spent months running at the store before I bought it so apparently it aired out eventually.

It certainly hasn't had any particular odor since it's been around here. :o

I remember reading about this years ago. IIRC it was found to be potentially toxic, although I may just be imagining this (perhaps my 2008 mac pro is drugging me;))

there is not a "07 model", so your MP should be exactly like the OP's Mac Pro.

BTW we have one "06 MP" in our department, and it doesn't smell.

there is, in a sense of speaking.. yes using 2006 mac pro motherboard but different CPU choices. you can't really say "it's a 2006 octo-core Mac Pro" because octo-core was not available in 2006.

It's actually hard to say what the changes (if any) were. But for one we know that a different logic board (motherboard) is used for the mp2,1 (07 octad) than the mp1,1 (06-07 quad). But many times components are changed on a product that do not require a model or product number update. This is controlled via some type of ECN process and are typically refered to as running changes. I can imagine that a capacitor on some of the early 06 logic boards or power supply was found to be outgassing and was corrected with one of these running changes. The smell was just a byproduct ot the outgassing. Sorry, no insider info, just my speculation.

Passives can change without notice, and not produce a change in the board's revision number (i.e. Nichicon vs. United Chemi Con, but the model still = MP 2,1). Silicon is a bit different though (i.e. 2,1 vs. say 2,1 B. if there was a change in say the NIC chip used, such as Intel ceased production on the previous part <initial>, and released a newer P/N = running change, not a new model released by the vendor).

Generally speaking, I've seen such things before.

Contacted AppleCare again, this time sent to a different service provider on the suspicion of melting rubber issue (yes, MacPro2,1 is one hot machine), hence have to replace the entire enclosure, logic board mount and all that jazz. Parts were ordered, but the service provider was incompetent enough to reassemble it, end up the entire unit failed to power on. Finally Apple decided to replace with MacPro4,1, resulted in one freaking month without a Mac Pro to use. Now I've got all those redundant FB-DIMM modules laying waste. :confused:

Mine has never emitted any odor. I bought it in November '06, but it actually came off the assembly line in August. A quick check of the web indicates that the odor problems started cropping up in early 2007. I came across an article on ZdNet which mentions that the fumes emitted by the affected Mac Pros are toxic, in fact carcinogenic (!), since one of the compounds is benzene (known to cause leukemia). I work in a petrochemical industry and am very familiar with what benzene smells like. I have no doubt I would have recognized the smell.

Yes I have AppleCare for both machines. In fact when they got me a new Mac Pro, they even offered me a refund of my old AppleCare even though my old MP was already 2 years down the road.

Yep, the Mac Pro 1,1 in 2008 was found to have a smell problem, with it allegedly emitting toxic benzene fumes.
