What was wrong with them? That'll be the store I'll be buying mine from soon.

While I feel sympathy for the OP's problems, it's typical that people who have problems will post, while all of those who don't ....well they don't

Don't you know, few bad Apples spoil the bunch?

I would help if the OP would tell us what's actually "Broken" about his iMac.

I bought a 27" i5 iMac from the Meadowhall store yesterday and it seems fine. No yellow tint, no dead pixels, no screen flicker and quiet as a mouse (much quieter than my white 20" Core 2 Duo iMac)...
So they're not all bad.

How are you transporting it? Like this? If so, you're doing it wrong...

I ordered my 27" iMac a few days after they went to 3 weeks shipping, i got it in 3 days, check my post. Mine is amazing, no flickering, no yellow tint(I did the test) and is super quiet.

The first one had a piece of black cloth under the glass, the second one the glass panel was offset by 3 mm to the left. The third one had dead pixels on the iSight camera and had screen flickering once the firmware update was installed as well as having the bottom right corner far brighter than the rest of the screen. The fourth on has dead pixels on the screen and bright patches all over the screen. All of them were pretty quiet.

Same with mine, it's perfect. Ordered mine on Xmas day and got it Jan. 8th. It's a week 53 27" iMac, no yellow, no noise and no flickering. You would need a stethoscope to here this thing run.

I sometimes wonder if people just look for something wrong with products. I've never had to return 4 of anything in my life and I can't imagine buying 4 iMacs with something so wrong with it that they all had to be returned.
Its like the Seinfeld episode where George buys Elaine the sweater with the red dot on it. She loved it until she saw the red dot, then that is all she could focus on.

All good here as well, Just went to the Apple store Sat. 13th , bought a 27" i5 and it's super quiet, I wouldn't know it was on if I didn't see the screen lit up. Non screen problems. Built week 6 of this yr so it was brand spankin new when I took delivery. US built as well.

Email Steve Jobs. His email has been thrown around in MR. Do a search. He does respond.

I'm absolutely certain there are cases of that in here. In fact, you will notice that there is a group of certain forum members who are always quick to tag their 2 cents onto any bad report and fan the flames of discontent even though some of them don't even own a new iMac nor have any plans of purchasing one.
Personally, like you, if I got even 3 bad iMacs in a row I would probably have long since left for greener pastures. Those of us who got good machines on the first delivery often get accused of being fanboys for posting about it but going through 4+ returns is pretty hardcore dedication to a product/company if you ask me. ;)
Oh, and my week 47 i7 continues to be problem-free and the best Mac I've ever owned.

Well i would email steve jobs if i knew what his email was, also to the person saying he never had to take back four of anything in his life. you buy a mac at £1.6k thats of sub par quality and has obvious details such as black cloth under the screen and the glass being offset. Both of those details are hard to miss.

I never said you were lying about the problems you had with your machine, Stu. I said it shows a sincere dedication to Apple on your part that you went through 4 returns without kicking it in and taking a refund and going elsewhere with your hard-earned cash.
By the way, the glass panel for the iMac is held on by magnets. I don't see how it could stay attached with a black cloth under it.
You can try to e-mail Steve Jobs at either:
sjobs@apple.com or steve@apple.com

That previous post was not aimed at you it was at the person you quoted in yours. Yeah i've returned so many products to the apple shop i know the returns procedure better than the staff. yeah the black cloth was about 5mm by 5mm and was under the glass in the middle of the screen on the first one i had. The second one had the glass panel offset by a few mm to the left. the others have had dead pixels and uneven backlighting. I will send an email to those accounts hopefully i will get a response.

Your terminology is a bit off. You're calling your iMacs "Broken". There's nothing broken here. Having a piece of cloth under the glass that you could've easily removed isn't considered broken. Since you are a visitor here I'm sure you could've did simple search to tell you how to take the glass off and remove the cloth. But I get you, it shouldn't be like that anyway.
My point is, when creating thread titles please be specific, I clicked on it thinking that you got iMacs with broken glass or the metal casing was physcially damaged. I got this because you mentioned build quality being bad. You don't equate dead pixels and cloth behind the glass as "broken", but maybe more like minor defects.
Its like the Seinfeld episode where George buys Elaine the sweater with the red dot on it. She loved it until she saw the red dot, then that is all she could focus on.
Well, it's goes a bit further here on MR. Nobody would even notice the red dot until MR told them to.

I took the iMac into the store and was told that if i removed the glass panel from the screen it would void the warranty and that the new screens arent as easy to remove so they could not fix them buy resetting the screen and would need to be fully replaced.

Yes considering most of the products i return are third party and hardly any have been apple products. I've returned at least 40 pairs of headphones that have broken and my Macbook once. My iPhone's 4 times. iPod touch 2 times. My first iMac i have never had one issue with it at all.

Maybe but I came on this forum to research my purchase, sill went through with it after what I read and 3 iMacs later I'm living with a dead pixel, so I say BS these things have some serious issues and maybe some oblivious people have problems and don't even know it. I wish I was like that.

Really would yah? What exactly would be greener pastures if your looking to avoid the PC world? Please explain?? I get tired of people like you claiming that people who have issues with iMacs are being to anal or picky. It's simple, for two grand I want a display with no issues!!

Can someone confirm this is true? I'd like to install a SSD drive straight after purchase and upgrade the memory later.

Anything that you open up that doesn't have a direct access panel voids warranty. To upgrade the memory there is a panel everything else seems hidden. So I would say it would void it.

you could do the sjobs@mac.com route... i did it once with my pb the next day someone from apple contacted me and they said the parts should be in the next few days... 2 days later I get a call from my apple store my computer is ready :p

I can't make that decision for you, Bruno. Clearly, there's something compelling enough about Apple to make you go through all those machine replacements. If they can't meet your requirements you will have to decide for yourself where to move on to.

Well, I very much tire of people like you claiming that people have serious issues but are just oblivious to them so we're even. :p

Hey, me too! We agree!! Actually, I would want a display with no issues no matter how much I paid.

Thanks for the response. That's quite a shame. My macbook pro with SSD would boot up quicker than iMac i7 :s
Looks like I'm going to have to put up withthe slower performance and delay the upgrade when warranty runs out or don't upgrade it at all.

Most of the monitor problems people have with the new iMac are due probably to a fragile screen which is subject to problems after falls or shaking.
I would blame Fed-Ex before Apple.
Only that can explain such inconsistencies in screen quality.
