Just got a g5 powermac any tips to make it last forever?

Hey guys, just got a g5 dual 1.8 power mac, I used to have a g4 emac that i eventually had to get rid of but am liking it so far. I was wondering if there was any way to take care of the machine. I already know that the power supply happens to be the weak link in the machine, but I am wondering if there is anything else. If you could please let me know any help would be greatly appreciated.

My dual 2.0 was easy to update and really not that pricey. RAM is cheap (at least 4gigs is advised), PCI-X sata/eSata cards are affordable, a flashed 9800pro will cost around $60 or so, and then just throw some 2tb drives and/or an SSD or two for a boot drive and you are set.

Have fun, I love mine. :)

thanks I am loving it so far, its been pretty awsome. It already has 4 gbs. I just need a video card for it. where the 1.8 dual agp?

pretty easy machine to upgrade. just make sure you match the ram. and the hard drives are pretty easy to install and upgrade. I bought mines with tiger 80 gig hard drive. no superdrive and 512 mb of ram..


It now has a 320 gig main drive. 250 gig audio drive. superdrive leopard and 4 gigs of ram.

The 1.8 were agp, yes. Also just noticed that the 1.8s had regular PCI, not PCI-X, but most PCI-X cards are backwards compatible...

My g5 died recently in what I believe was caused by excess dust build up. I think it slowed the flow of air and something got too hot.

Agreed with the dust thing.
This thing can gather an insane amount of dust, and my fans would run really high because it had been over a year since I popped it open.

One other dust note--I clean out my G5 every six months, but I was having power issues. The power supply is under the "floorboards" of the machine; get a can with a straw, stick the straw in one of the vent holes, and watch years of dust fly out the back! Solved my problem in an instant, it's amazing how much dust had built up down there...

Will the G5s accommodate SSD drives? If so, that's another great way to at least double the perceived speed of your Mac! :)

Cool I think i am going to go to the store and get a dust can fairly soon, it seems like it was in a clean enviroment, I just don't want it dying on me.
