You don't need to remove the speakers to access the optical drive, just unscrew the drive carrier and remove the hard drive and optical drive together.

Also, you have to break the plastic tabs holding the speakers in place to remove them, so you'd need a replacement set of speakers to put back.

What's actually gone wrong with the current one?

You could always try an authorized Apple service centre and ask them to order the CD-RW drive (part number 661-2424) for you. They may not be willing to and it would probably be very expensive.

If you want to get one cheap your best bet would be searching eBay, the CD-RW drives are pretty rare but usually go for about $60-80.

Otherwise MCE make a couple of drives for the iMac, a burner for $179.00 and a combo drive for $249.00

The only cheaper option would be an external firewire drive.
