I have a first gen white Macbook (60GB HD)

also. when i get the new drive, do i have to clone it to copy the contents over to the nwe drive, or can i just back a backup of my current system using time machine and copy that backup directly to my new hard drive?

Yes, it will be, both use SATA. As long as it's 2.5", it's fine.

Good choice!

I would clone and then do a full reinstall. It's time to upgrade for Snow Leopard, but you know that you can install without installing Leopard first?

Yes, you can use that drive or any other S-ATA 2.5" HDD with a maximum height of 9.5mm.

You can either clone your current Mac's HDD to the new HDD via an external HDD enclosure.

Or you can use Time Machine and its backups during the installation process and let Migration Assistant copy the data you want (Applications, user data, ..).

Also MRoogle has lots of topics on those issues, as they're asked more than weekly.
