Register Hardware notes (http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2010/02/18/iphone_gambling/) that Apple has modified the iPhone SDK to specifically allow developers to include sweepstakes and lottery functionality in their App Store applications. The new rule is unambiguous:

"3.3.17 Your Application may include promotional sweepstake or contest functionality provided that You are the sole sponsor of the promotion and that You and Your Application comply with any applicable laws"The report notes that developers must clearly state in any contest rules that Apple is not a sponsor of nor responsible for conducting the promotions.

Also referenced in the report is The KaChing Button (http://appshopper.com/entertainment/the-kaching-button), an application introduced in December that previously only served to allow users to make a novelty "ka-ching" sound. The $0.99 application was updated last week, however, to include sweepstakes functionality under the new SDK terms, allowing the application's developers to offer "up to $1000" per day in prizes over the next month to random winners selected from those pressing the KaChing Button within the application. Daily prizes (http://www.kachingbutton.com/daily-kaching-winner-announcements/) thus far have been at the minimum $100 level and will presumably be increased should revenue from application purchases support such payouts.

Wow killing violence and Gambling is ok but nudity is not. This is a messed up world. We believe our own bodies to be a sin but the wrong we do to each other is ok.

Here come the App scams and ripoffs.

Now the store will be filled with useless gambling apps. They need to create another category for this as well.

It's kinda brilliant from a dev stand point.

Your app costs $0.99
You give away $1000 a month to one user who is pushing a button.
If Your app causes a million people to download this and give it a try, you make $700,000 from app sales, and only have to give away $1000 a month.

Heck, they could give away $20,000 a month and would still make a killing, and would make the app that much more popular.

I don't see much wrong with that.

This is stupid .... allowing this kinda of crap, but still too stingy to open up private API's like cover flow and full access to the page curl animation for ebook type applications.

Don't forget about all the cash for Apple Inc.

Yet again the dollar rules over all at 1 Infinite Loop.

Wow, one or two developers will really luck out with this! If used properly, you could make some serious cash off an app that pays out customers for viewing ads on a regular basis.

Yes, Apple succumbs to the big $$$$ signs, no different than the real world, people trying to rip you off around every corner.

I guess since they caved into the immoral minority that hate porn, they have to do this to make back the money they're losing on the porn apps.

This type of game/scam is illegal under most states' laws. You can't require a purchase to play/win. And the prize has to be posted. You can't vary the prize depending on how much money you make. That is a raffle.

I like the app. Is it $1 to press the button how ever often you like from then on out? Or $1 per push? Seriously, if it's the former, it's less than the cost of a pack of gum and could possibly give you money back. No big deal, at least it's a novelty app that could have a redeeming value.

They should also bring back the porn, in fact, create an adult section on the app store. It'd be interesting to see how the porn industry could utilize the mobile app market.

I'm an iPhone developer, and I make my living from selling my app. However, the way Apple manages AppStore... it's just horrible... They've lost the last bits of my respect...

Apple: hey everyone, you're welcome to make scam apps! Fart apps used to be the face of AppStore, but that's old. Scam apps are new fart apps! :(

My first thoughts on seeing this post. Rarely do I say this - but WTF is going on with Apple on their app approval process?

Are Publishers' Clearing House ads illegal on antenna television? No! Are porn ads? Yes! What is different about the app store. Sweepstakes does not equate to gambling, and even if it did, it's not as bad as porn.

I don't think Apple thought this one through very well before giving it the green light. I have seen documentary after documentary on the news about how internet gambling destroys people's lives. I don't think Apple wants to be a part of that. Also, we all know about scams and identity theft - destroying even more lives.

Someone needs to develop an app that displays random porn pictures with the press of a button. There will be a 1 in 10,000 chance that you see man porn - but if you do, that means you won a $1000 sweepstakes!

Apple would SO go for it.

We had the sweepstakes feature of our app added to the App store yesterday. Now people can submit their Oscars picks for a chance to win up to $10,000. Our app is just $.99 and you can get it in the App store here: Awards Hero: Oscars® Edition (http://bit.ly/aso0LT)
Prize is varied on sales numbers so tell your friends to get the app! (and it makes the facebook part of the app more fun to have more friends to compare your movie picks)

So we will see iPhone OS 3.2 on April 3rd right? When the iPad is released with it. That makes sense right?
