View Full Version : Is one IDE port faster than the other in the G4 MDD?

I read the board on my MDD and I believe one reads ATA/66 and the other ATA/100. Does this mean one of the busses is possibly faster than the other?

I notice that it runs super swell, the ONLY wall I ever hit is in read/writes.

Any tips on making it run 10.4 smoother?

Thanks.

Yes, all three of the IDE channels run at different speeds.

1. The one that connects the hard drives located in the rear of the computer is ATA100.
2. The one that connects the hard drives under the optical drives is ATA66.
3. The one that connects the optical drives is ATA33.

You may want to look in to SATA PCI cards to help improve performance.

Nah, it's nothing major. Somehow it feels...well it's an indescribable happy feeling I get when using things like my iMac G3 or this Power Mac or *gasp* a 128k Macintosh! It really makes up for the pain, hard work and performance.

Although, it has completely outperformed my expectations, and for that I've fallen in love with the G4.

So, the drive bay nearest the CPU heat sink would give me the best possible performance as far as the PATA goes?

Correct. You definitely want your boot drive installed there.

Thanks much! I did read the board when I originally decided where to put the drive, so it is in the rear.

Not so much a problem, she's already shattered my expectations and buried my 5 year old Compaq.
