I ordered a maxed out aliewnare PC on the 9th of this month and its taking them 32 days to get it to me... this to me is an outrage... I dont really game much anymore so i was thinking of getting a G5 or a power book. Ive never owned a mac before but ide be sinking about 4,500 into one if i got one. What would you reccomend getting? also i know the paris expo is this week so when should i buy so that i can have the best for the longest?

thanks

Switch to Mac. You'll be happy :D .

I will warn you though--if you order a G5, they won't ship quickly.

However, you'll enjoy a Mac much more than a PC!

BTW--wait till tommorrow morning, should be new iMacs by then. :D

Well if you had to order a computer right this second, I'd recommend you get this (http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/72102/wo/mC2GTHwZUD1n3fff4u8txzTa4UY/4.0.9.1.0.6.3).

Then I'd go to a place like www.crucial.com and pick up 1-2 GB of RAM depending on what you want/need.

But I would seriously wait less than 24 hours to see what the iMac are spec wise.

And be warned, it can take several weeks for Apple to ship something, especially if it is brand new on the market. But normal orders should take longer than a week to ship, even if their BTO. I ordered my (stock) iMac Saturday night, and had it by Wednesday.

The big question is, what do you want to do with it? This knowledge is vital to finding the right system for you. People seem to think they need a $2000 G5 for email and typing! If you want to do graphics, I recommend a G5, but if you want to just get used to a Mac buy an eMac and play around, if you want to do more buy a G5, please tell us what you want to do with your computer so you don't have to spend more then you need to.

One thing to keep in mind is that you don't HAVE to buy an apple cinema monitor... they cost a ton, and they have limited resolution. I like to run everything in 1600x1200, which would require me to get a 23"... I don't have that kind of money.

I also wouldn't be surprised if you ended up waiting longer for the G5 than the alienware. But what's holding up alienware? ...a 6800 Ultra? the same will hold up a new G5...

Convert to mac, and you will find truth. You have roots here you didn't even know about.

Ok, lets put it this way..... the alienware Ive got on order is:

FX53
2 gigs corsair
7.1 sound
dvd burner
6800 ultra
3 10,000 RPM hard drives raid 0 with 2 of them
giga bit lan
660 watt power supply

So I think it goes with out saying I like my computers fast as ****.... I game, edit video EVERYTHING.... even a little seti :D

My main fears about going mac are:

ill get one want to play a PC game and not be able to... but i think my curent rig will do for a bit...
or ill get it and hate macs and have wasted 4,500$

Also theres all this illegal stuff i do on my PC with IRC like dl movies and stuff... and i dont even know if i will be able to get the programs to do what i want with a mac  im just freaking out becuase i dont know what to do... I was born and raised PC.... i just wish someone would give me a G5 for a month so i can see if i like it.

Macs have resale... if you don't like it, you're only out a couple hundred (if that).

If you really need fast storage like that... you'll need some third party stuff to install more hard drives etc...

One thing you should know before hand is that you make a sacrafice when you switch platforms completely. I didn't have a PC for over 2 years, and it was a little frustrating when doom3 came out... hence the peecee i now own. But for everything else i do, it's on the G5. It's so much more beautiful and elegant... more efficient it seems... definately more reliable...

Personally, i can't imagine doing video editing on anything other than a mac... Just seems impossible.... but good luck if thats you're thing

IRC is all over the place, as is bittorrent and filesharing programs on the major networks. Pretty much most things you do on a PC, the equivelent can be found..

I might like to point out if you go to mac you might as well kiss gaming good bye. Very few games get ported over and normaly the ports 6-7months after the game been out and a lot of those ports run worse than the do on a equivlent powered PC (do to crappy porting).

That is a great setup, but seeing as how you were outraged by the delay of your PC, I just thought I'd let you know that you probably won't see this mac on your desk until mid to late September at the earliest.

Still, go for it, if you are going to do video editing, there is no other platform on the planet better than the mac.

One thing, the Mac already has Gigabit Ethernet onboard. Do you really need the second port? (although I do hear theoreticaly the card is a little faster due to buses or something)

Just thought I should point it out.

OK first. DITCH THE ONE BUTTON MOUSE!!!!!! It looks cool, it's got that nice precision of a laser mouse, and other than that, use a PC mouse. It works just the same.

Secondly, there are several threads you need to read in here, like http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=58101&highlight=cool+apps and other more recent versions.

Third-yeah, gaming on macs=use your PC, because 3D ain't so hot. But, for 2D graphics and other power intensive things, nothing on earth comes close to a mac. So, your video editing, your photoshop, your ProTools, your music, just look, the high end people in all of this use macs, everywhere. But, for the 3D nature of games, gotta go PC.

heh, you're going to get flooded with people explaining liquid cooled G5's, betting on how much that's been discussed on these forums.

I get most of my stuff off of newegg.

Same old story...if you want to get rid of the headaches and frequent tantrams buy a Mac. For some reason, everytime I get a PC, they always end up on my ***** list. I switched two years ago and currently have a PowerMac G5 2GHz and Ti Powerbook 1GHz... and couldn't be happier. I think the day when Mac games develop further...alot more people will switch.

Only bone to pick about the PM G5 is no 5.1 audio support - buy a M-Audio Revolution 7.1 if you need some decent sound!! :D

Currently looking for PCI-X sound cards but I think its still a little too early.

The wireless keyboard is a great addition and comes in handy when you need the extra room, depending on your setup.

Enjoy your new G5--you'll love it!

I will say, I'm not sure if the Dual 2.5s are in stores yet--you might want to call ahead. Just a thought, I might be completely wrong.

Chat: iChat for AIM is included.. however, I'd go the Adium path (adiumx.com) which does all the major networks and it works well too..
IRC: I use BitchX (bitchx.org) which is pretty much available on any platform and if you know how to use the command line a bit then it's really good. alternatively there's a bunch of GUI clients that other people can recommend.
