Just a day after Apple released (http://www.macrumors.com/iphone/2010/02/22/new-iphone-ads-on-hold-and-first-steps/) a pair of new iPhone commercials, a third ad entitled 'Family Travel' has begun airing on television and been posted (http://www.apple.com/iphone/gallery/ads/#family-travel-large) to the company's ad gallery.

Although the new ad returns to Apple's common theme of featuring individual iPhone applications, it is notable because it utilizes a female first-person narration rather than the standard male voice-over used for Apple's other commercials of this type in the past. The new ad features three App Store applications plus a clip of the Pixar film Finding Nemo shown accessed through the built-in iPod application in a narrative of a family heading to the airport for a trip. Featured applications include:

- Southwest Airlines (http://appshopper.com/travel/southwest-airlines) (Free)
- GateGuru (http://appshopper.com/travel/gateguru) (Free)
- Schlage LiNK (http://appshopper.com/lifestyle/schlage-link) (Free, but requires compatible hardware and service plan)

First Steps released just two days ago had a female first-person narration, so I don't think Family Trip is particularly notable for this.

Yeah, this isn't notable as the first female narration was in the "First Steps" commercial. I mentioned this in my tweet to arn when I tipped him off yesterday. I'm always confused when I see the MacRumors Bot! Where do these posts come from?

Does anyone know how to save these? It's not the usual quicktime plugin because I can't just right click and save it.

Hmm. Female announcers. Boob apps removed.

I wonder what's caused this rather belated attention to women users?

New survey? New managers? Jobs' wife? All the Droid sales to women?*

(Others have already come up with the iPad as the reason. Although it could, in theory, use a different storefront.)

* Not scientific. Just judging from my friends and coworkers.

Actually you are using the Quicktime plug in, but it's just masked in the HTML part of it. There a couple of ways to do it, but the simplest is to:

(1) View the source and look for the ".mov" files within it. They will be something like this "http://movies.apple.com/media/us/iphone/2009/ads/apple-iphone3g-ad-itchy-us-20090406_848x480.mov" so you can usually tell by the way they are named which one to grab (there will be a couple of them).

(2) Copy the URL you want and paste it into your web browser. IF you have Quicktime Pro you can save it directly from there with the right hand corner arrow icon pointing down.

(3) If not, you can place that URL in the "downloads" tool window within the Opera browser and it will download from there.

What percentage of the population are these women again? ;)

Southwest clearly was able to get their strategic priorities reflected in here -- note the Denver departure. They're presently investing a lot into growing market share there.

The GateGuru parts are obviously shopped a wee bit (albeit of course, not materially for the purposes of this ad). While the businesses shown do mostly exist at DEN, they aren't all in Concourse C as the video purports. My guess would be (since it's not just made up from whole cloth, which is what one might suspect) that the tone of the actual availabilities in C wasn't quite right for the ad, but they wanted to be true to the fact that Southwest's operations are in that concourse, as that would be the bigger obstacle to suspension of disbelief.

Schlage LiNK is back after the 12 Days of Christmas commercial, now turning off your lights while you're on vacation instead of your Christmas Tree lights. But don't forget it can also still lock or unlock your doors, allow you to stream live security camera and control your thermostat.

I did a little research after seeing JeffTL's comment about Southwest being a little shopped and found that Schlage LiNK was completely right. Because not only does it help you turn off your lights it will tell you if they were left on in the first place.

Full Disclosure: I work for Schlage LiNK but thought you all might be interested in knowing what it can do and that the app is authentic.

If you have any questions about my comment or Schlage LiNK feel free to contact me.

The end of the ad reminds me of an ad from years ago...

the new powermac has the power to turn off the lights in an office building, right?

I can't find it for the life of me right now though... :-/

I didn't realize how cool the Ipad really is until I got mine in the mail. There is a promotion to get free Ipads here

So they can use any SIM card on it, if it's not unlocked then only AT&T will work on it.
