View Full Version : Why is my core i7's wifi so slow? Tried multiple fixes
aneftp

My core i7's wifi has been acting up like crazy the past couple of days.
I had the same wifi issue with my previous iMac alumn 2.4 and my macbook 2.4
Wifi speeds are so sporadic. One minute it's super fast. Another it slows to a crawl. When plugged directly into ethernet, it's always fast. I moved my router right next to the iMac so it's not a signal issue. But I prefer it to be in another room since I use slingbox with my cablebox.
I've research this issue. This is a known Apple problem. Why hasn't Apple fully address the slow wifi issues. My Sony Vaio laptop and Gateway Laptop connects to my wireless network anywhere in the house without any issues.
I've tried changing the channels (default is 6) to channel 11 or 1. This helps for a while than the internet slows down again. Same thing with changing the DNS.
It's not my router. I tried the Netgear, Linksys and my old Belkin router. It's on WPA2.
I'm a techie (had one of the original Linksys routers way back in 2000) so I know my routers.
What's Apple's problem? Any other suggestions for me? I am very dumbfounded.
Hey at least my iMac core i7's screen appears perfect and it's quiet the majority of the time...but wifi sucks at this point. I doubt it's a hardware problem either since it does work from time to time.

Wow,
104 Views on this topic and no responses.
I called Apple tech support. While he was courteous, he wasn't helpful. He tried to blame my ISP (cable internet), tried to blame my router (I told him I used 3 different routers; they all couldn't be defective cause my Windows PCs all work fine).
I highly doubt this is a wifi hardware issue since the problem comes/goes. It has to do something with Apple's OS. It's not like this is a new problem. I am just stuck at this point.
I can't even upload a 300MB file to my Mobile Me to keep as storage. It loads 20MB craps out, than tries to load 50MB and than craps out. Very frustrated at this point.

I was having major issues with m macbook and my :apple:time machine.
This is what I did to fix it.
Turn off Airport on your imac. Go to "open network preferences" click in advanced and delete all of the networks in the list once done click o.k and apply.
Leave airport turned off.
Go into your keychain in utilities.
once key chain is open, type "airport" into the keychain search box. Delete everything in the keychain to do with airport.
Once done close keychain.
Open a finder window.
Go to your mac's HD.
Find the library folder and enter it.
Then find preferences and enter it.
Find "systemconfiguration" and enter it.
you will now have 7 files in this folder.
delete the following (don't worry they rebuild when you reboot the mac)
com.apple.airport.preferences.plist
com.apple.network.identification.plist
networkinterfaces.plist
once these are deleted. reboot the Mac.
Once rebooted switch on airport and find your network.
This worked for me, hope it does for you.

Does it just happen to the i7? What about other computers that are connected via WiFi?

Try Bootcamp? that should narrow down if its a hardware/software issue.
If you see an intermittent connecting in windows as well, its almost certainly hardware (imac/router/modem/etc).

I have Windows 7 Professional with Bootcamp. Wifi Internet Speeds are fast and consistent. Speedtest.net always is around 9 MB/s download.
With Snow Leopard on my iMac there speeds are very inconsistent. Sometimes I get the 9MB/s on it. Sometimes speedtest.net doesn't even complete and gives with an error message.
This has got to be a snow leopard problem. I'm researched these forums and google apple's tech support site. Multiple people have had issues after Tiger 10.4.10 with intermittent wifi speeds.
I don't mind using Bootcamp with Windows until I get the problem solved. In fact I'm typing using Windows 7 bootcamp right now. But Bootcamp has issues itself (first the dreaded black screen on install; fixed that, than I had no audio, fixed that). Now I have a screen gradient problem. Must be an issue with the ATI video driver.
I have the "perfect" iMac core 7 (very little noise, screen is flawless). Now even only I can fix this wifi problem. The bootcamp problem with the screen gradient I can try to live with or I'll just install Windows XP. I'll try what the other poster said with changing the configuration. Hopefully that works.

Let me know if it worked. I can not claim the fix, i found it after doing loads of searching.
My network (mac book) has been fine ever since. My mac mini & my wife's windows pc had no issues at all with connection. I have all 3 machines next to each other and he only one that would drop was the macbook.
Its been solid for about a week and half.

Tried your solution. It didn't work. Very annoying. WiFi is still so sporadic. It starts and stops. Currently speedtest.net can't even complete the speedtest.
So changing DNS doesn't help. Changing wifi channels to 11 or 1 doesn't help. And changing my wireless routers didn't work.
I have 2 options:
1. Run Bootcamp all the time with Windows 7 (that's fine but I've got bootcamp issues with the grainy screen ATI/video driver problem).
2. Run ethernet straight. Again, I have the cable modem/router setup on the other side of the house because I run slingbox/and my security system for the house is configured for that phone outlet on that side.
This has been a known Apple issue for the past 2 1/2 years (since Tiger 10.4.10). I am positive it's not a hardware issue (because it runs fine in bootcamp). It's gotta be a software issue.

what are your speeds?
are you having problems only on your internet browswer or when you're downloading big files as well..
i had a problem like that once, i re-installed firefox after erasing ALL the files and preferences related to it and it worked great..
No offense but i don't think it's a "Snow Leopard" problem, or an OS problem for we would all have it.. and my speeds are 21mbps every single time..
What exactly comes down to a crawl? web browsing? try a new browser like chrome or something.. try to narrow down your problem so u know how to fix it.. or if you don't just get it exchanged

I think you need to look past the OS as being a source. It may seem obvious to you but do realize that there are millions of people on here running the same OS without issue?
I understand you are a "techie". IMO a "geek" and respect your knowledge but sometimes you have to go back to the basics......maybe check your cables? You may be saying "I'm talking about wireless!" but there are still cables involved.
How many times have you moved your wireless router to prove your theory from OS to OS? It just so happens it is connected to something right?
I respect your "techie" labeling but I've been troubleshooting things like this forever as a career and if there is one thing I have learned is that is usually comes down to something stupid like a bad connection.

I'll just bear it for now the problems I'm having.
Like I said, if I use bootcamp and Windows 7 in the iMac core i7, there's no issues at all with wifi. I don't mind using Windows 7 in bootcamp but I am having video graining issues with Win 7.
And I have 3 other wireless routers sitting around I've been trying to troubleshoot. My other 2 windows pc laptops work fine will all 3 wireless routers.
I'll go to Best Buy or Costco, try to pick a newer router and see if that helps solves my issues.
But this is a common issue. Just google search "slow wifi" and macbook and iMac's and you see lots of people have been having these issues since Tiger 10.4.10 release and the problems continued onto leopard/snow leopard.
My internet wifi speeds are sporatic. Sometimes I get a burst of 9 mb/s, other times it starts at 9 mb/s and literally slows to a crawl where it stops work. I can't even upload a 260MB file to mobile me because it will go halfway and just stop. If I am on Win 7/bootcamp the uploads work fine.

Apple's Airport Utility got an option called "Use interference robustness".
I realize that you don't have an Apple access point, but maybe windows and your access point uses something like this when communicating...
Do you have any wireless transmitters (phones etc. on in your house)? Maybe even a microwave oven...

I may pick up a Apple Time Capsule. $300 bucks seems steep to me. Trying to justify it. 1TB hard external hard drives costs around $100-150. Wireless routers costs between $50-100.
Has anyone had wifi issues with Time Capsule? I know the newer ones have duo band that run stimulatanous vs. the older time capsule that made you choose.
I've seen on Apple Discussion forms that people have had slow wifi (like me) even with the Apple Time Capsule.

I have similar problems with slow WiFi with my new iMac 27 i5. I'm switching from an iMac 24 and right now they are standing right next to each other, both running 10.6.2 - but my WiFi speeds differ a LOT. While my old iMac24 runs at about 16 Mbit I only get 6-8 Mbit on my new iMac27 ???? This is really annoying. And I'm using a TimeCapsule.

Same here. My iMac i7 is sitting right next to my MacBook 2GHz C2D, both running 10.6.3 on the same wifi network from an Airport Extreme (802.11n). Right now speedtest.net is showing 6.35Mb/s on the MacBook and 0.71Mb/s in the iMac. It took 3 attempts to even complete the test on the iMac. It's the same speed problem in Firefox, Safari, iTunes, Google Notifier, you name it. Are there ANY real fixes to this issue or do I just have to rewire my house to get an ethernet cable to my wirelessless iMac?

First post!
I recently bought an i7. Very very very happy with it! Had PCs all my life but due to a job change decided switchin to a Mac would suit me better.
I too experienced wayward wifi speeds. It would drop from 1meg a sec to like 22k a sec, it would then spike up and down all day.
Tried all the fixes listed in this thread and the ones on multiple forums. Changing channel helped until the iMac went to sleep or I switched off. When the machine had booted back up the slow speeds would reappear.
I had tried several routers too and my Win7 notebook works perfectly.
Had almost given up and gone with trailing a 10 metre cable from the router to the iMac...until I decided to manually assign an IP for every device in the house. This included the two iPhones we have and the iTouch. I stuck the iMac on the first available address and then just added the rest after that one by one.
Since then Ive had no problems what so ever! Ive logged off, restarted, switched off etc etc and when Ive tried resuming downloads its been running at full pelt. Also tried it whilst playin MW2 on the PS3 and the iMac still holds 1meg a sec speeds.
It may work for you, may not but manually assiging each device an IP has solved my issues. Hope it works for you too!

Hey, tell me more about this procedure, please. I tried to do this but I am not sure I did it right ...
The problem is my imac loses connnection to the router and I have to disable airport and reenable it to get a connection. I was having this problem with a wireless printer until I set a static IP for it and it has been rock solid ever since. This is very annoying!
Do you think that would solve my problem?
Thanks!

I just went into the admin panel for my Netgear router, searched for the attached devices and then assigned them an IP. If you have a netgear router drop me a PM and Ill walk you through how I did it.
Has been two weeks since I have done the manually assigned IPs and its been flawless, no issues at all.

I NEVER post, but I went and dug up my old password to contribute to your thread and validate your frustrations. I've had these same wifi issues on my 2006 C2D 24" iMac running Leopard (not Snow Leopard) forever. 12 Mbs...then less than 1. Customer service is clueless on the issue, but there is clearly a body of frustration out there on the web about this. I've changed DNS servers, I've changed routers, I've changed ISPs...I'm not an idiot and I'd consider myself in the top 1% of tech savvy for general public, and I'm quite certain that my Apple itself is flawed. Based on the forums I've read, I'd agree that there's some firmware/software issue at fault.
For the record, I have just been relegated to performing "advanced network diagnostics" or whatever the button is when you press "assist me" in network preferences. It will take about 5 seconds to run and then say my network is working properly. After that I get my 12 Mbs down again. Then, surely a few days later it's back to sub 1 Mbs speed and I have to do it again. Nothing has been able to fix the issue permanently so I repeat this annoying temporary fix every few days. All the while, multiple PC's keep the high speed wifi connection 100% of the time.
I don't know, maybe there's something about having PC's in the house interacting with the same wireless router? The only reason I mention that is because I have a Motorola Droid, and any time I connected my Droid to the wireless network, my iMac would COMPLETELY lose it's connection. The same temporary fix described above would reconnect my Mac, but as soon as I'd use my Droid again the iMac's connection would break. So I just quit using my Droid on wifi. Luckly Verizon's 3G is so strong here, the difference is speed isn't even noticeable. But still...perhaps it lends some creedance to the theory that having multiple devices interacting with your router can cause these issues on our macs. It might also suggest why a high percentage of users experience no issues...perhaps most of these users are in a mac only household.
Anyway, I hope my post has validated your concerns a little bit (as most people on here seemed very dismissive of them). I'd like to keep this discussion going and hopefully find a solution.

My i7 iMac also has slow speeds using WiFi. I had my ISP come to my house twice, was paying for 15mbit/sec and was only getting 1-2mbits/sec on speedtest. He busted out his windows laptop and got 16mbits. They changed out the modem, and did a whole bunch of other crap, and still was getting terrible speeds compared to his old windows laptop. Pretty upsetting.
I'm gonna try some of the suggested fixes in this thread. Hopefully I can figure out how to assign a Static IP.

This is also the same OS that randomly decided that its firewall should start filtering every wireless router's DHCP IP address assignment whenever my laptop would try to connect to a network and request said IP address. That was a pain to figure out. Some issues are very specific to the particular hardware, OS, and settings being used.

Just adding to the list here, with some more details, trying not to explode.
I brought the monster home, set up, everything was good. Started downloading my favorite free apps and other things and streaming some tunes. After 3 hours or so the stream started to break for a few seconds at a time. I wasn't paying attention to transfer rate, but hard to ignore a dropped audio stream. Tried different browsers, same problem.
When I click on the wifi icon in the menu bar, i can see the break occur: it'll show I'm connected with full bars, then it will flicker to:"looking for networks" then connect, then "looking for networks", then connect, etc.
I set my macbook pro on the same desk, no connection issues at all. Arg.
Ran speed test on both machines, huge difference between the two, in fact, couldn't finish the speed test on the iMac until the 3rd run. VERY UPSET. There's really no way i can run an ethernet cord from the transmitter to the new iMac without going along the ceiling, or around a very long wall. The freaking transmitter is just on the opposite wall, can't be moved, and is just 4 meters away. The iMac and transmitter are even at the same goddam*ed height. For other reasons, i can't rearrange my desk and other furniture to fix this.
Now i read here and in this thread (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2344256&tstart=0)that this is a known issue, no fixes.
I have a non-expert feeling it's heat, radiating around the antenna, inferring with the signal. hate hate hate.

I'm no Techie, but I found this fix on the apple forum. Its solved my issues, my internet is now lightning fast.
i was having issues with safari and firefox taking forever to load pages. sometimes they wouldnt even load at all and id get a roadrunner "cannot find server" message.
i pinned this to be a dns translation issue.
here is how i fixed it.
go to network prefs>advanced>dns and add this in the dns server box: 208.67.222.222
in the search domain box add this: 208.67.220.220
these are open dns servers. this has fixed my issue and i am back to smoking fast internet. i hope to god this helps some people.

OP: you must give us some more technical information. ping times, internet download speeds, transfer rates between computers on your intranet (both wired and wireless), tests comparing 802.11n and 802.11g (with 5ghz and 2.4ghz as well for n) etc.
troubleshooting wireless transfer rates are extremely hard, maybe you just have too much interference.
i personally had a huge internet problem, but it was related to my DNS servers that the ISP was using - configuring it myself and using other DNS servers fixed it just fine.
for reference, expect 802.11n @5ghz to hit a max of 9MB/s, and 802.11g to hit about 3-4MB/s max in the real world.

I have an Apple Airport Express Base Station
I opened the "Airport Utility" app tonight and it told me that a firmware update for the base station was available, so I downloaded it and installed it. I ran speedtest before the update, I was getting 4.73MBit/sec download. After the update I am getting 24.57MBit/sec download! Wow! and no drops in my connection so far. My firmware was really out of date, and maybe this was the wireless n update which could be why I am getting faster speeds. I really don't know but it made a world of difference. Also, I am using a 2.4GHz MacBook Pro here, not an iMac. I have a 20" iMac downstairs.

the deal is that Apple does not support properly their timecapsule and network equipment. it is utter trash.
we have all been hoodwinked into thinking that apple provides actual good and properly working products ... they dont.
I know for a fact that the problem is on the apple wifi/router/timecapsule side of the house.
I take the timecapsule/airport/wifi out of the equation and boom the upload speeds are fine(by replacing it with a linksys wifi router). put the timecapsule back in the equation instead of a supposedly crappy linksys router and we are back to severally slow uploads.
it is amusing when you first try and upload a file it bursts... then within the first 10 seconds it starts choking ... and then over the next minute it goes to 0kb upload.
the fact that apple has done nothing ought ot show you what you the customer are worth... you are worth the big payoff up front by buying their over priced crap ... then they toss you aside, cause they cant admit fault.
they need to come out and admit they built crap and fix it. its like their wifi has some throttler limitation that says whooooaaa there doggy we are only for surfing the web and nothing more ... we dont upload anything more than a few kb over wifi...
my setup...
this doesnt work:
Macbook Pro 15"i5
timecapsule 2TB
fios modem
fios internet(this is a fiber optic line made for businesses... 15mb up 30mb down so no it is not my connection)
this does work:
macbook pro 15"i5 (yes the same one)
linksys router
fios modem
fios internet
this also works:
macbook 15" i5
clear 4g clear spot
i have called apple support and they tell me time and time again that it is my isp... they refuse to listen that it is not and that without their crappy product in the way everything is fine...
pretty much the only thing that might be worth buying is their laptops ... and i think that is a stretch also at the moment... what if i have a problem iwth it? i guess i get crapped on also...
F APPLE. I will be going back to a cheaper solution and running linux os's.

Good for you. I hear Linux has a great support model. I'm sure Linus will be able to answer all of your questions personally.

i know you are angry, but you are being completely irrational about the whole situation.
first of all, we need more details about the issues you are having. when you say its slow and not working what is slow? is the whole network slow? or is JUST internet access slow? give us speedtest.net results, AND local network data throughput results copying to another computer.
the Time Capsule is not very slow at all - its slower then quite a few new router, you should expect ~10MB/s data throughput on 802.11n on a clear channel.
so please, give us more information to investigate for you. dont jump to conclusions.

Just got an i7 2.93 imac the other day, my first mac and the first thing i noticed regarding it's wireless is how crummy and slow it is on the iMac. I had to move my router all around to get something decent. I have a 30Mb/sec internet connection and my 5 yr old laptop with wireless card has no problem from further away reaching max speed on a speedtest but my brand new imac which sits 20 feet closer to my router sees 20Mb/sec at best!! Usually 7-10MB/sec is the average. What a disgrace! Getting a mac has also made me realize how many things are better on a PC.
The airport is garbage, plain and simple. It is weak and not very consistant.
Another thing is why can I spend $230 on a 23" LG monitor with perfect whites, color saturation and minimal bleeding and the first thing I noticed on my brand new $2200 imac when I booted it up is some slight yellow tinge on the very bottom and right corner. And a (larger than speck) of dust under the glass.
Its a nice machine and I like it so far. However the hype is greater than it's value. That is my initial impression after spending a weekend with it so far.

I have a core I7 iMac with airport express. Guess what.
It works as fast as my Internet connection and more.
I work in the industry and it performs to spec.
You guys are obviously doing something wrong.

Even if your speed tests are on target, read through this article
http://www.macworld.com/article/146064/2010/02/troubleshootdns.html?t=234
and try Namebench to test your DNS response time.
http://code.google.com/p/namebench/
Hard coding my DNS ramped up my response time, then after running namebench it suggested a better FREE DNs server alternative which bumped up my response time again.
Hope this helps!

All:
I just wanted to pop in here and let you know that this may be the cause of a recent "scourge of the industry" that both Qwest and Comcast have foisted on
their end users, a thing called "DNS Helper" that ends up causing more problems that it fixes.
It's basically a feature for clueless end users (think your grandma or someone else who might mistype a url) and it allegedly offers helpful suggestions.
I've seen this domain helper service do things like prevent Microsoft Outlook from communicating over a VPN connection to just outright preventing proper DNS functioning.
Some of your dns related issues may be related to that.
There is hope - you can opt out of these services but I've seen these services get re-applied because I believe these ISPs are profiting somehow by these services.
FYI.
Another issue is: if you have 2.4 ghz cordless telephones in your residence it WILL interfere with your wireless functioning no matter what kind of computer you have. I recommend moving to 5 ghz models.

Yeah i must be doing something wrong when every other device in my house on wireless runs flawlessly with steady thruoughput but the imac doesnt.

you must be - there are so many configuration options to choose from, and it doesnt sound like you have trialed them all.

Have you guys tried a PRAM/SMC reset?
That said when i had a 2007 iMac it also had this issue.

Same issue with very slow wireless speeds. Tried several of the fixes on this thread but no joy.
There are several macs (G4, G5, core 2 duo) on the same connection all working at lightning speeds.
When testing the i3 on speedtest, noticed very erratic speeds, jumping all over the place - interference?
Netgear router was on channel 5 - no other local router sharing channel 5.
Changed router to channel 10 - i3 now working at lightning speed. Also checked it back on channel 5 - repeatable slow speeds again.
System Profiler shows Airport Firmware as Atheros 9280: 2.1.14.5
Hope this helps for some of you!

This worked for me, hope it does for you.
xSPRINTERx Thanks this suggestion fixed my issue. I migrated over from my old macbook and your suggestion to clear settings made sense, I had previously assumed that the migration may have confused the new macbookpro but did not know how to rectify, following your procedure (or whome ever you copied it from) I cleared out all the settings as you suggested and now do not need ot purchase an extra long ethernet cable! I just need to ask for wifi keys again when I visit other offices that I work at! Thanks again.

I think my joy was a little premature! The thanks for the advice still stands but unfortunately after a few hours of glorious average wifi connectivity yesterday, today the old wifi connectivity issues have returned. 802.11N wifi to my macbook, Sony and Dell over a distance of about 70 feet is fine and speedy, yet the macpro keeps dropping connectivity even though the airport icon is registering a full four bar strong connection. It is frustrating.
