Is there any way to use an external monitor as an extended desktop on a g3 iMac? The iMac's VGA-out port only mirrors the image on the built-in crt, but i'd like to use it for second monitor. Is this possible?

I dont think there is any way in the imac to do a 'dual display' without hacking it.
there is some kind of 'firmware hack' for the iBook G3's to support dual-displays, but im not sure if there is any way to do it on a iMac G3

You know that the port is behind the case, right?
The only hack I know is Screen Spanning Doctor, but it will not work with the CRT iMacs:

The vga port is the one that has the white connector coming out of it. You have to take the back cover off - the round white bit under the handle where the coloured part stops and the white part begins. The VGA port is the one with the white cable. The other ones are for power and the CD rom drive etc. The VGA plug needs to be undone as there are screws holding it in place.
Here is a link for taking the back cover off the iMac G3 showing all the cables:

With regards to extending the viewable area of the iMac, I don't think you can do this as there is only one VGA port for display.
have fun!! :D
