View Full Version : Stupid Songs That Were Big Hits

"Informer" by Snow (1993)
"Rock me Amadeus" by Falco (1985)
"Boogie in your Butt" by Eddie Murphy (1982)
Any others that you guys can think of?
I am outraged that you consider "Boogie in your Butt" by Eddie Murphy to be a stupid song. ;)
Seriously, any Eddie Murphy song - with the possible exception of " Livin' La Vida Loca" on the Shrek 2 soundtrack ;) - needs to be on this list... except that none of them were "big hits".

I don't have songs, I have lists of artists though...
oh wait, one song that should be burned from history like a genital wart: Celine Dion with My Heart Will Go On.
'artist' wise (and I use that term loosley)
Christina hadnohaira
Brittney 'the slut' spears
Actually the above two seem to be competing for 'how low can you go'. There should be a pool onto who hits Playboy and who gets Penthouse
Jessica 'the brain' simpson. I'd bet money she's a marketing genius
new kids on the block, and their alter egos n'sync, 98, back street boys, any band with 'the jock, the rebel, the cute boy, the baby' type mold
Anyone related to a late 90/early 00 teeny bopper trying to glom onto the fame of the sibling
Any american idol winner, or loser as the case may be.

Well, actually, Jimmy Buffett hasn't exactly had many hits -- you have your Come Monday, Margaritaville, to a certain extent Changes in Latitudes, the cheeseburger, the cameo in the Jackson song about getting drunk on company time, and the entire License to Chill. He's actually more of an example of great material that ISN'T a hit -- I don't recall He Went To Paris ever being at the top of any charts.

Disco Duck sold 4 million copies and went to #1 in the mid 70's.
Here's a taste of the lyrics:
Went to a party the other night
All the ladies were treating me right
Moving my feet to the disco beat
How in the world could I keep my seat
All of a sudden I began to change
I was on the dance floor acting strange
Flapping my arms I began to cluck
Look at me... I'm the disco duck!
Unfortunately not on the iTMS... yet.

I beg to differ. While it was huge in 2000 during the Olympics, it's still a pretty good song. While very weird, it is a good song. It sadly represents the Aussies though, like "We are the Champions" represents the US in a way.

...Devo, "Peekaboo", 1982...
Man, by that logic everything They Might Be Giants have ever released belongs here. Incorrect, IMHO. Devo couldn't do a thing wrong - ever. I totally adore their contribuition to the Powerpuff Girls album 'Heroes and Villains' - not commercially succesful, so keep it off the list...
Nobody has mentioned the seminal "retard song" the record companies bring out over Xmas over here to get the kiddies' money. Can you say 'Mr. Blobby', 'Bob the builder' and the tomato ketchup song? OK, these are all old now, I gave up on radio about 5 years back... someone else will fill you all in on the latest. Do you get this shameless stupidity every Xmas anywhere else - or is it just us?
Addendum. Pretty much everything ever released to the charts here is st00pid - it's the funny-ha ha factor which persuades those with nothing better to do to buy crap. "Outkast" seems to be a big offender nowadays, expensive videos, outwardly trying-to-be-funny lyrics and a small degree of charm offset by the belief they're hard men. Oh yeah!

Man, by that logic everything They Might Be Giants have ever released belongs here.
They [Devo] really did lose track of what they were doing around 1982. They apparently ran out of new things to say, and only the schtick was left. It's a shame, really, but it seems to happen to most artists.
TMBG really are very different. They have avoided retreads and continue to find new and interesting ways to look at the mundane.
Do you get this shameless stupidity every Xmas anywhere else - or is it just us?
Novelty records do show up and make themselves noticed some years, but for the most part the US pattern is to stick to the same recordings from years ago.

I think its just that the British actually educate youth in music in open enrollment schools (I've taken care not to say public - theres a major difference between public schools in the U.S. and in Britain, if you're not familiar ask your local Brit or Yank). The U.S. system really fails to do so, unless you're one of those lucky bastards in an affluent suburb. Devo never treaded retard water, and the proof is in Mark Mothersbaugh's modern work. I never really thought of Outkast the way they're mentioned here, but then again, I don't listen to the radio or watch music tv stations (total misnomers there). I always thought they could kick just about anyone's ass talentwise. Listen to the drums on BOB and tell me that they couldn't out squarepush squarepusher, not to mention the fact that the one guy wants to move to france and make crazy coltrane style jazz music.

Hoping that's sarcasm... no, really? The chart over here is generally the stuff you have released 2 months previously plus some homegrown indie crapola. Of course, if you like homegrown indie crapola (The Streets, The Strokes, The Darkness, The [insert plural band name here], Franz Ferdinand ... a bunch of others) then yeah, you're way out of the loop!
iMeowbot: I see your point. Since I was only... uh, negative 1 at the time, Devo's release timeline is a little alien to me. I just picked up a bunch of albums a couple of years back and have grown to adore them all - same with XTC; strokes of genius, if a little repetitive at times.
yuc7zhd2: Musical education in schools, in what sense? Maybe I just went to (and god knows, I did) crappy schools all my life - music class featured playing Frere Jacques on a keyboard for 2 years. Outkast - I've heard their album played many, many times through the freakin' wall of my partner's dorm last year since I too don't listen to the radio, and don't have a TV. I've caught their videos every once in a while though, the band seem to "role play" in each of them a different gang of loveable rogues. Ugh.
Oh yeah. That bloody Princess Diana song was awful too :)

As a man in the states, I can say that most people believe British music to be far superior, right or wrong. There is something about it though thats just lacking in the states, I don't know what it is but there is something. If I hear any modern music that I like, and find out the band are from the states I'm quite surprised.
edit: also sorry about the british music education thing, and thanks for clarification, I admittedly assumed wrong. Whenever a US publication writes about british bands they always take some 'they met in a british school in music class - just like radiohead' kind of thing. glad you clarified. for your own reference, the us music education system sucks hard.

Woah. Can't see that after the tripe produced now -- although I'm biased ;) - for what it's worth, I do tend to agree the British indie has a bit more charm than the conveyor of R'n'B artists, sole vox, Rap-rock combos and such you export.
edit: also sorry about the british music education thing, and thanks for clarification, I admittedly assumed wrong.
Ah, see, we're at cross purposes. You're taking music class as meaning at an earlier (compulsory) phase of education, rather than the voluntary College or University levels here - I stuck music out as long as possible but ugh. Sure a bunch of bands meet in College or Uni (we have differnet names - i believe college level here is late High School there?) - they actually have to want to be educated!

Nazareth. Later covered by G'NR (they did a good job too). Remember when that song came out, it was hard enough that most radio wouldn't play it.
I've been going through my cassette/vinyl collection putting it on my iPod, and it's fascinating seeing how music has changed. Stuff that in it's day only the most hard-core would listen to (early Sabbath/Ozzy/Dio, Iron Maiden, Priest et al) these days you can hear on adult contemporary stations. I remember a radio station in the 80's explaining that while they were experimenting with harder music during the day (and this was _the_ hard rock station in Toronto) there were still some lines they would not cross, like playing "Whitesnake" on their morning show.

Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" was named Britain's favourite pop single of all time (http://emusician.com/news/emusic_bohemian_rhapsody_voted/) on Wednesday in a poll by Guinness World Records (GWR).
More than 31,000 people voted in the poll for GWR's "British Hit Singles" book.
The six minute epic first topped the charts in 1975 and became No. 1 again in 1991 when a fund-raising version was released after the death of the group's singer Freddie Mercury.
Guitarist Brian May, who collected the award with fellow band member Roger Taylor, said on Wednesday: "The song was apparently so far ahead of any rival that even months before the deadline, its position in this new poll was unimpeachable. Thank you, people, for the memory."
The song, written by Mercury, also continues to live on every night at the musical "We Will Rock You" which is running at a London West End theatre.
Its video was also recently voted third best of all time by viewers of the music channel VH1.
David Roberts, Editor of GWR's "British Hit Singles," said: "Queen is a band whose achievements are legendary...It (Bohemian Rhapsody) really was miles ahead of the opposition."
The top 10 favourite singles of all time are:
Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen
Imagine - John Lennon
Hey Jude - The Beatles
Dancing Queen - Abba
Like a Prayer - Madonna
Angels - Robbie Williams
Penny Lane/Strawberry Fields Forever - The Beatles
Wannabe - Spice Girls
Yesterday - The Beatles

Last Christmas by Wham - the way they sing 'I'll give it to someone special' with the dreadful echo makes me leave any shop that happens to be playing it at Christmas.
Now if we're going for stupid songs, you could add just about anything by King Missile - tho I guess none of them have been hits. For those who've never heard of them, titles include 'Cheesecake Truck', 'Jesus Was Way Cool', 'Detatchable P-nis' and 'Double F---ed by Two Black Studs' Bizarre but intentionally funny!

Oh man, I have a few.
Does anyone remember that song in the early 90's where a french baby talked during some techno beat? That was horrible.
Here are some others:
- Was not Was: Everybody Walk the Dinosaur
- La Tour: People Are Still Having Sex
- Baz Luhrmann: Everybody's Free (To Wear Sunscreen)
- Chumbawamba: Tubthumping (Song sucks, but I like the band as people)
- The KLF: 3am Eternal
- Technotronic: Get Up
Blast the person who said Rock Me Amadeus sucked, it's a CLASSIC!

Yeah, they may be buried in the past, but the sad thing is they're ALL currently in my iTunes library (minus the baby song). I guess that's why I bought a 60gb iPod: to hold all the crap songs I like to keep!

20+ years since I heard that song, and the lyrics are STILL IN MY HEAD! AUUUUGH! :)If it makes you feel any better, it did knock John Lennon's Woman off the top of the charts, and it stopped Vienna by Ultravox reaching Number One (some people rate this as one of the best songs ever that only reached number two, but personally it means nothing to me :D).

Thanks for reminding me of Woman... now THOSE lyrics are bopping around in my head. :)
G105, my favorite radio station in Raleigh, NC, used to have a nightly show called The Top Ten at Ten... people would call in and vote for their favorite songs, and... well, you can guess the rest. One night, after 6 straight weeks of some damn Duran Duran song being #1, the host announced that he would not accept any votes for Duran Duran. #1 song that night: One Night in Bangkok, by Murray Head.

I wouldn't be surprised if there were a few iMixes for these types of songs. I know there is an iMix named Stupid Album Titles (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPublishedPlaylist?id=245133).
I know there are some "one-hit wonder" iMixes and I also noticed iMixes named "need more cowbell", "needs more cowbell", and other variations on "more cowbell".

That would be "Dur Dur D'Etre Bebe" by Jordi. That song is wrong on every level possible. Hey, that kid should be about 16 now. Wow.

Get set for a comeback. I just got back from France where Jordi is taking part in a 'celebrity' reality TV show (The Farm). My how he's grown.

- Bamboleo - Gipsy Kings
- Diggiloo Diggiley - Herreys
- Live is Life - Opus
- She's Like The Wind - Patrick Swayze
- Boys - Sabrina
...or really every song on my list of most embarrasing songs in my iTunes library (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=1363845#post1363845)... :o :D

Jay-Z - Bonnie & Clyde
That disgusted me. He stole the beat from Tupac and completely wrecked the song. Tupac's song was called Me and My Girlfriend but if you know about Tupac you would know that it was about his gun. Jay Z's was actually about his girlfriend.

Son of a Bitch - by AC/DC or was it Nazareth?
Everytime I hear this songs I can't stop laughing because I'm sure somebody somewhere thinks it "rocks sooo hard". I can just see someone crankin' the AM/FM radio in a rusty hatchback at the Taco Bell drive through. That's right..."now you're messing with a son of a bitch".
Needs more cowbell...
I think you mean "Hair of the Dog" by Nazareth
And also, BOOOOOO to the Queen haters. Although Bohemian Rhapsody is definitely not my favorite Queen song, probably simply because it's the only song everyone else knows.

In what world is "Bohemian Rhapsody" the only Queen song people know? What about "We Are the Champions"? "We Will Rock You"? "Another One Bites the Dust"?
I absolutely love "The Chipmunk Song." It'll always be one of my Christmas favorites.

reading this 2 songs immediately came to mind:
'the wall' by pink floyd. god, i hate these kids singing 'we don't need no education...'
'blowing in the wind' by bob dylan (and its thousands of reincarnations). love all the rest of dylan's work though and actually own the lot of his albums.
