Sorry if this has been asked, but I didn't see a response for the 2009's, maybe it is the same answer as the 2008?

Can I put non-ecc ram in the 2009 MP?

I just bought a recertified unit from apple, but it only comes with 3GB of ram, I want to get closer to 6GB.

So I am trying to figure out what is the cheapest route. I am currently looking at a tripple channel kit on new egg by crucial that is non ecc for $165.

or would it be better to add a single 2GB module which is much less and upgrade to a tripple 6GB ECC kit later?

You can use non-ECC memory if you want to save the $35.

Ok that is go to know. Actualy if i need to stay in sets of three i would have to spend more, unless i can just add a 2GB stick off ecc ram to the exsisting 3 1s.

Which leads me to the next question. Do i put in 3x2GB or 4x2GB or 2x4GB?
do they need to stay in pairs or sets of three?

3x2Gb has the fastest memory bandwidth
4x2Gb may have performance benefits if you fill it all up.

I went for 3x2Gb.

Ok thanks!

I look and see if the cost of the extra 2GB is worth it. Sounds like 3x2 route is the best.

May as well add the single 2GB ECC DIMM and see how you use it under activity monitor, then you can make a decision when to get more memory.
