Mac's for the classroom

Hello i go to a school that currently uses FCP to edit and make about 15-20 minutes movies that is then put on tape and shown to the whole school. We currently have about 6+ eMacs (1st gen 700 MHz cd-rw 256 ram ect...) and now its time to upgrade.

We were looking at the new iMacs and were loving them although we can get about 2 eMacs for the same cost as one new iMac (and that would be good because then we could have more people editing and get the movies out quicker)

although the eMacs don't have as much power as the iMac G5 :(

What we are probably going to do is get the eMacs and save up for a new iMac cause those are just down right awsome.

either way we are still going to see a power increase from what we currently have.

So what do you guys think. should we keep the six macs we have now and buy one new iMac or buy some new eMacs and add to our little collection?

any advice/comments would be apreciated

I really like the 1.25 eMacs. They're stout. I would get a pair of G5 iMacs, then use the rest of your $$ for eMacs. They're going to be a little slower than the G5s, obviously, but they're not a joke or anything.

Maybe you all can talk about how to form plurals in the classroom, too.

I say buy the emacs and get 1 imac g5 though more people will want to use the imac because well.. its the new imac.

1.25GHz G4 eMacs would pack a lot of punch as an upgrade from 700MHz G4 eMacs. And the "high-end eMac" has the 8X SuperDrive so you could burn the movies to DVD instead of using VHS. Of course that adds $200 to the price -- the "low end eMac" is a very affordable unit IMHO.

There is no reason you cannot have a mix. Like another poster suggested, get 1 or 2 iMacs and the remainder as eMacs. Put more specialized stuff on the iMac or save it for encoding and burning, and you will have the nice little media lab.
