I have quicktime 6.5.1 and OS X 10.3.5 and I cannot view AVI or DIVX files.
I get a message like the required compressor could not be found.
All I get is audio.
I even downloaded DIVX 5.1.1 and nothing.
Can anyone help?

Try 3ivx (http://www.3ivx.com/download/macos.html).

Use either MPlayer or VLC (VideoLan)player...both have equal or superior picture/framerate as Quicktime and play a multitide of formats (including AVI and DivX)
would provide links, but lazy... just google...

go to quicktime preferences. Click on the plugin tab. Click the MIME settings button. Click the video - video only and video with audio file formats line. Voila! you can play AVIs
or
use VLC its as close to a universal player as possible.

I had done this... but still got the error stating something like:
"you may experience some problems playing the XXX.avi file as the required compressor could not be found"
so I downloaded VLC.

before or after you downloaded DIVX? DIVX does chage some files in Quicktime and the above fix usually works fine.

Thanks for the help, everyone.
I download videoLan and I can view AVi on that.
I would like to use quicktime as super movie viewer, but....
Selecting AVI in the preference didn't work either.

Thanks everyone.
installed 3 ivx but then had the sound problem mentioned in their Read me file - so will need Divx Doctor II from them...
think I might just stick to VLC for avi files.

3ivx pwns.
but whats equally cool is divxdoctor. changes avi files to quicktime so you can see it in quicktime (:
requires the codec though, its just useful when you need to send a clip or something and the other person doesnt know what to do with it.
a w00t w00t for vlc...that app rocks (:
