Wow... what bitrate do you encode in/did you make a typo?

I encode most of my music in 128 mp3. I can't tell if there is any improvement when I raise the bit rate because the speakers that came with my iMac kinda suck. But if is a song I really like, or a song that sounds like crap at 128 I'll encode it in 192 AAC or 256, but there are only about 100 of those.

I also encode it at 128 mp3 because I only have an 80GB hard drive, and space is really limited. If I had the money (about $600  ) I'd build a PC and use it as a music server with maybe 3 160 GB hard drives in a RAID 5, and then re-encode all my music at 192 AAC or 256.

I hate it when people ask for a favourite song. :)

10.24GB worth of 1695 songs lasting 6 days, 15 hours, 53 minutes and 15 seconds, comprising of 465 artists, 115 albums, and 2 genres - 'Terrible' and 'Claustrophobic' as they're too damned difficult to categorise. (Are Orbital techno, trance, house, electronic, chillout, something else? Who cares? Just listen to the music.)

An impressive collection. I just barely have you beat.

5657 songs.
16.7 days.
25.8 GB.
68 genres.
632 artists.
721 albums.

Most recent are ripped as AAC@128. Most files (from before AAC), MP3@160.

Unfortunately, I've many discs that I've not yet ripped. So, this report is mildly inaccurate.

A further question: do you rip your whole collection, or just stuff that you listen to more frequently? Myself, it is a combination, deleting less-played stuff as I need more disk space, and re-ripping at other times.

Even better, my full list (cropped to fit max file size allowed by m.r.)

It's organized by artist name/song title/play count... as you can see i've been digging the new green day album a lot, which i purchased the day it came out...

Other people - post your library, go to file/export song list... i'd be interested to see what other people listen to ...

My collection has just jumped to just over 5700 I think.

Initially I started ripping my entire collection... but got very sick of that quickly... and stopped and started.
So no its not my entire collection - and recently I have started culling it.
I was going to just unselect songs so they didn't end up on my iPod - but now I have the 17" PB - I have actually started to delete from iTunes completely.

One day am keen to do an audit of my CD collection to work out what CDs I haven't ripped in yet... but mostly just add new CDs as I buy them.

So now I'm keen to manage it. Kill off really old or really bad songs - that i never listen to (and given seemingly my bad taste in music in the early nineties... there could be quite alot to go!).
