I searched and didn't find any existing threads like this.

So I bought some interesting beer I saw at the LCBO today. I pretty much saw it and had to buy it.

IMO Michelob is one of the best American brews - without breaking the bank.
I'm not spending $40 for a case if it isn't all that much better.

I was drinking a Corona the other night here in Japan and happened to notice that one of the ingredients was corn...confirm/deny in your country?
The reason for this is because 6-row barley which is native to north america has a higher protein content than the two row barley historically used for pilsen style beer. When American macro breweries started copying the czech pilsen style the undesirable chill haze from the additional protein content became apparent and corn became the primary ingredient due to its lower protein and increasing regional availability. This practice continues today, despite the fact that ingredients such as corn and rice in beer are used mainly for ease in mass production and near indefinite shelf life while resulting in a less desirable product for the end user.

I live on a farm, where we grow hops. we produce 50tonns of hops each year (sometimes even more!)
for 100L of beer you need 6grams of hops. Slovenia (where I live) uses around 25tonns of hops per year. beat that!

anyway, I drink these:

No, it's actually imported but I can't find it in Virginia anymore. Whenever I go to Orlanda to Disney, I stop by King's Marketplace and buy out their stock.

I've never heard of Pelican before, but I'll for sure keep an eye out for it.

Funny.. a few months ago, in CostCo (large warehouse store), I met some guys from Australia. They were purchasing some beer, and had a shopping cart full of Miller Light!:eek: I asked them why, in the name of all that was holy, they'd drink *that* stuff. They just wanted to try it, figuring it might be American beer, but it's still beer!

According to Monty Python, American beer is very much like making love in a canoe... ****-ing close to water. In the case of Miller Light, I'd have to agree.

Oh, and Cooper's Sparkling Ale for the Win.

Pilsner Urquell is worldwide known but I prefer Bernard Pale Lager.

Two more of my friends...Bud and Chuck...
Woodchuck Cider is fantastic. Not even close to a beer though.

I had been drinking Heineken for quite some time but recently I started drinking this Germany Brew--not as good as at the source but a nice beer for Florida.
I love Warsteiner. Luckily there's a local German restaurant (Uwe's, it's authentic stuff) that has it on tap.

Everything I've seen on the first three pages is just urine in a bottle.
Apparently you missed the Guinness and Beamish Irish Stout on the very first page. ;) I know they aren't technically beers but when people talk about "beer" they mean a wider category.

My personal favorite is Alaskan Amber. So smooth.
I ripped the image from beerandmicrobrews.com as I have none in stock at the moment.

So far I am seeing percentages all the way from 5% to 14%. I would try it. How did you like the taste? I would rather a beer taste good then be strong with no taste at all.

If you have ever had Avery Mephistopheles you will know what I am talking about. The beer was super strong but tasted horrible IMHO. The alcohol was over the top and ruined it for me.

I also think that the main reason that you drink beer in the first place, is the TASTE. To me the constant upping of the alcohol percentages is just a marketing ploy. :)

Couldn't agree more. There seems to be a race going on with the micro brews to see how much ABV they can stuff into their beers. I don't mind a little kick here or there but once you put so much in and the taste is severely impacted it ruins the beer drinking experience for me!

That was my problem with it. I love stouts and porters (my favorite style), but that one was way over the top for me. And it doesn't have to taste nasty. Brooklyn Brewery makes one called Black Chocolate Stout that is around 10% and I actually liked it. A similar thing is happening with hop levels. Every microbrewery seems to be trying to one-up others by releasing these insanely hoppy beers.

Look, if you want a high percentage beer just to get drunk, a fine malt liquor beverage will get the job done and will be a lot cheaper than these craft brews with insane alcohol levels.

My wife and I just got back from our cruise vacation to the eastern caribbean islands. Starting in Puerto Rico and working our way down. I don't have pictures of all the beers but I tried to drink the local beers as much as possible. I drank Medalla in Puerto Rico, Banks Beer in Barbados, Piton Beer in St. Lucia and Carib through out all the islands. 99 cents a bottle in St. Kitts. Too bad they didn't have this stuff on the ship. My favorite might have been the Banks Beer. It does help that it was all you can drink.

All about the desperados!

Desperado? Oh you're a hard one! But I know you got your reasons. It seems to me some fine things have be laid upon your table.

Local ales are my preference. There was great brewery near me, but then I moved away. Sometimes visitors still bring me a couple of bottles of 'best'!

Rogue 21

This is a once-brewed ale, and I'm a fan of Rogue, so I had to try it. I tasted it right out of the fridge, and it seemed like it needed to sit and lose some of its chill. After that, it was full of flavor. It has many characteristics of an Old Ale without the sharp alcohol taste and with enjoyable Strong Ale bitterness. You can taste some of Rogue's molasses that is familiar from their Dead Guy Ale. The color is not as dark brown as in the picture but more of a medium brown with caramel head.

Overall, a tasty, extremely well-balanced beer, but not enough to make me buy it again at its price.

Been having a good bit of Tröegs Nugget Nectar while I can still find it. Six-packs and bombers. A highly sought after beer in places where it's unavailable, and with good reason! It has been on tap around here, too.

The reason for this is because the 6-row barley that is native to North America has a protein content higher than the historical two-row barley used for beer-style pilsner. When American macro breweries began copying the style of the Czech pils cold mist undesirable additional protein was evident and corn became the main ingredient due to its low protein and increase the availability of the region. This practice continues today, despite the fact that ingredients such as corn and rice in beer are mainly used to facilitate mass production and indefinite useful lives, while about a product resulting in more convenient for the end user.

Inspired by some of the posts here I decided to take my first foray into the world of American craft beers and microbrews by treating myself to my first bottle of Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. I realise that Sierra Nevada is at the more "commercial" end of the craft beer scale but it's one of the few that is readily available to me off the shelf at my local supermarket.

It made a nice change from the regular American beers that I'm used to drinking; Budweiser, Coors, Miller etc, and I genuinely enjoyed every last drop of it, and if it wasn't for the fact that I'm trying to lose a bit of weight could have easily finished the remaining 3 bottles!

Next on my list is Brooklyn Beer's Black Chocolate Stout, though obtaining this will require more than a quick trip to the local supermarket, also on the list is Flying Dog's Doggie Style Pale Ale.

Recommendations are welcome...

BBCS is a great stout. If you like that, there are many Imperial Russian Stouts you will love in the craft beer world. In fact, Imperial Russian Stouts and Imperial IPAs tend to be the most sought-after styles. Recs for brands is nearly endless, so I will not try to list all that I enjoy. More important is exploring the styles, so instead of Pale Ales, I would try some IPAs. This style, although endlessly popular, is not for everyone and may require an acquired taste, which is not all that uncommon. Pale Ales are rather boring in comparison, however, I understand using them as a transition from macro.

Without knowing what's available to you, particularly overseas, I will just name some generally easy to acquire brewers in the States. Flying Dog is certainly a great go-to brewer, as is their neighbor, Heavy Seas. I highly recommend trying Heavy Seas Loose Cannon for your first IPA, as the hoppy bite is mild. If you end up being a hop-head, go for Stone's beers and also Flying Dog's Raging Bitch. If you're into wheat beers, Franziskaner and Weihenstephan are great hefeweizens; Hoegaarden, Allagash White, and Flying Dog Woody Creek are great Witbiers. I don't know if Dogfish Head is around for you, but any of their stuff is great to try. Rogue is pretty awesome, as well; particularly their malty brews like Chocolate Stout, Mocha Porter, Hazelnut Brown Nectar, etc. Rogue and Stone are a bit pricier than your average beers, but still in a medium price-bracket. I wouldn't bother with many ultra top shelf brews yet until your palette develops better and you get more familiar with what you enjoy. You don't need to be spending $10 or more for a 12 oz bottle now. Also, Samuel Smith Oatmeal Stout is always a winner and is British.

Oh that's great! And I'm glad I could help. :)

Ballast Point - most known for their Sculpin IPA, which is very highly sought after, so although they do not offer it on the site, I would certainly try one of their other IPAs.

Dogfish Head - their 60 Minute IPA is a popular go-to brew. Their 90-Minute is even better. Festina Peche is a summer favorite, very tart, being a Berliner Weisse. Don't be afraid of it's peach description, it does not taste like peaches haha. Indian Brown is another favorite of theirs.

Flying Dog - they have some of their regular brews, so just try what sounds good to you. Since Flying Dog is brewed where I live, I have a soft spot for them, but it's also very common to me, so I would go for some other more special ones first if you have to narrow it down.

Goose Island - DEFINITELY get some of that Bourbon County Vanilla Stout!!!

Rogue - Wow, great selection here. I would choose Chocolate Stout, Shakespeare Oatmeal Stout, Dead Guy Ale, Mocha Porter, Hazelnut Brown Nectar in that order. And if you still want more, then their Red Ale, IPA, and Brutal Bitter.

Smuttynose - pretty good, but be careful of their IPA. It is a very strong IPA (big bite to it) like Flying Dog's Raging Bitch, so if you don't know how much of a hophead you are, it's probably too much. I would leave Smuttynose for last

Stone - Imperial Russian Stout for sure, Vertical Epic, Smoked Porter, Arrogant Bastard (Oaked version even yummier), Ruination IPA. Just keep in mind that their ales are strong but very delicious if you like strong.

Victory - Victory has good stuff, as well. Treat them like Flying Dog... try as you can.

Dont feel bad every country's top beers are basically pee water. Even the great beer country's like Belgium (stella) Germany (heinekin). My country USA has 100s of garbage brands. You don't have to drink it!
