I own two Xserves I use to run my business. One is a Dual G4 Xserve running Jag, the other a G5 Xserve running Panther.

Everything is running well now, but there are those times when urgent support is needed. Apple charges $200.00 to usually tell you to reformat your machine to fix the problem. This is obviously very uneconomical and impractical when it comes to needing support, especially when there are so many Xserve admins out there.

So, my idea is to start a little email list exclusively of Xserve admins where if someone has a problem or a question, that person can blast everyone else on the list with their problem/question.

This has several advantages over a web based thread:
1) More immeidate responses - People will respond to emails quicker than they will by a forum. I don't have time / the general focus to remember to log on to a website to help my fellow admins. But, since I check my email numerous times a day, I will be much more likely to see the new message and send back a response.
2) Small Network of known members - Everyone will know everyone, and will start to see what aspects of administration each person excels in. So, instead of doing a general blast, eventually people can email eachother as "specialists".

The goals of this idea reach to several levels. On the lowest level, admins get quick, free support to help them with their problems in a relatively rapid manner. On a deeper level, we make the Xserves perform better in each individual application, making the Xserve and Apple perform as better rivals against other operating systems.

I am not sure if this has been done before, but it seems like a good idea. Please keep in mind this email list should only include Xserve admins, as to not lose focus by means of "unnecessary" members.

Please let me know your thoughts on this and spread the word to your Xserve admin friends! Depending on the responses I get will determine what kind of methodology we will use to keep track of email addresses. Maybe I can make a quick database driven web app where questions are typed in a web browser, and the question is blasted to all currently subscribed recipients.

Thanks and shout back!
