View Full Version : Who still has good old PS2 and GC ?

Dr. McKay

Just wondering. I've got a Mac and two consoles, a PS2 and a GC.

I have nothing but AAA-titles on both consoles (Tekken 5, GT4, God of War, FF12, Zelda, Mario sunshine, metroid prime 1 & 2, etc.), about 25 in total.

Anyone here still appreciating these "classics" or have you all been seduced by Wii, Xbox360 or PS3 ? For the moment, I see no reason to "upgrade" as the new consoles offer just more of the same, only with better graphics (not counting that weird Wii thingy - Nintendo, please go back to making REAL games, although I have to say the new Mario (galaxy) games look cool).

I still have my PS2 and also a SNES. I use and still enjoy both occasionally, but most of my gaming these days is done on the PS3.

We actually just bought my younger son a brand new PS2-slim (yes, Sony still makes them!) for his birthday in late February, and have been stocking up on games. He is huge into Kingdom Hearts, so we haev gotten all 3 of those games, plus FF XII, Dragon Quest VIII, Katamari, GT4, Rogue Galaxy, a Sonic Mega collection, and a few others that escape me ... all used games.

... Goozex is my friend ... :D

I have all my old systems, barring my N64 which the girlfriend has now. I still play them too. More so than the current gen.

Oh and FWIW Nintendo do make real games. It's other developers that aren't.

Yes, sorry about that. I stand corrected.

In fact, I love Nintendo games, I just don't like all that family Wii stuff. Now all of a sudden, gaming isn't geeky or antisocial anymore.

Come on, gimme a break...

Sadly, unless you were an early adopter of the PS3 (i.e. when it cost too much and offered too little), for the last ~2.5 years the statement would be "ps3 (DOESN'T play ps2 games)"

I have an NES and Genesis in my basement, complete with Duck Hunt and the gun and a few arcade style controllers.

Up stairs i have a N64, PS2, XBOX, and a guy at work said he will sell me his gamecube super cheap ($10) if i mod his wii.

I have all the current gen consoles as well, which is actually the first time i've had all the current consoles during that generation. If i had a SNES i would have a pretty complete collection.

I've only played the (meh) PSP remake ... how are those games? I see they are 'M' rated ... how is the content?

We have a box full of PS2 games.

Slim PS2 with Crystal Chip Pro running r34 firmware, and a GC with Qoob Chip. Only AAA titles atm, but am trying to finish ICO. I will keep my GC for Metroid and Starfox, and the PS2 to replay MGS 1,2 and 3 probably another half 2-3 times.

I still have my PS2 and all the Nintendo consoles except the Gamecube. Used to have a Gamecube but sold it because the Wii plays Gamecube games.

I will keep my GC for Metroid

Metroid Prime on GC is my favorite game of all time (it used to be Zelda 3 - A Link to the Past on SNES). Runners up are Resident Evil 2 and Final Fantasy 7 on PSOne and Super Mario 64 on N64. Sadly, I no longer have my N64, SNES or PSOne.
Thank god for SNES9x !

The series changes really drastically with 3. I never got into the first game either (which is the remake). P3 is really well done but lacks the battle refinements that make P4 much better. I would say pick up P4, then if you dig it, pick up the P3 remake which is coming to PSP in July as they have added a new female main character (if you don't wanna be the emo dude) plus all the new battle system fixes that were in P4.

I'm not 100% sure on the M rating. There is some swearing (harshest word being s***), some blood... I think.... and some anime girls in a bikini when they are at the beach etc. The story is kind of dark, with hangings and such so maybe thats why? P3 got M because when you use your magic the characters shoot themselves in the head to 'evoke' their Persona....

It's very good :)

Cool - I'll request P4 on Goozex for my kids to try, and grab the PSP version (assuming it comes to PSN ... no more UMD's for me unless I have to ...) when it comes out.

I so need a Wii again for the new Wii games and all those awesome Gamecube games. <3 Donkey Konga and Luigi's Mansion, and Pikmin is on the Wii so that is awesome. Gamecube was my favourite console out of the 3 (PS2, Xbox, Gamecube).

I already played the games I wanted to play on the old consoles, new consoles have new games that I havent played.

I've seen old classic films numerous times before but I still rewatch them because of their greatness.
I listen to older music that I enjoy more than new music (even in the genres I like).
Why would games be any different? I'd rather play an old good game again than almost all the new forgettable games. There are also old games that I've forgotten about, old games that I never 100%ed, old games I never even played, old multiplayer games that (paradoxically) never get old.

*Grin* I just unpacked my old PS@ and the only other system that I own happens to be a game cube. I really wish that I could have gotten a couple of the Sonic anthologies, Sega anthology or the atari collections games instead of what I had - I can't find them anymore.

+1000% to This!

Heck, I do a series of articles for GearDiary called 'The Netbook Gamer' and generally these are games I have played before ... in the case of some games I have played them literally dozens of times ...

Do you ONLY watch old movies? Do you ONLY listen to old music? Or to make it more relevant to the OP do you ONLY watch movies that came out from 1995-2000. Do you ONLY listen to music that came out between 1995-2000?

The OP is limiting himself to just one generation of games and is missing out on AAA games he hasnt played in favor of AAA games he has already played. I would rather try something new.

No I don't just limit myself, that's why I have an Xbox and gaming PC. Some people just don't want new consoles, some wait until they're old and cheaper and the games are abundant. I find myself playing older games simply because they're better.
But to flip that around do you only digest media from 2005+?

Don't laugh...

My buddy's Wife will not ever watch a B/W movie or show... and I had a job at a high school where one of the students said she will never watch a movie that was not filmed in HD...

yeah, some people will limit themselves - that's what they want.

I'm not ready to buy a 360 or PS3 just yet, because I believe they're still too expensive for what they offer (games aren't cheap either). And that's the only reason. I'm not against new gear or evolution or anything like that.

Still, no reason to ditch the old for the new when the old is still alive and kicking...

I had a xbox 360 and a lcd tv, but sold both and got an N64, PS2 with light
gun and an old style tv for the light gun to work on. Both where fun for a while, but because i had and Nintendo Ds for a little while i played the Ds versions of must of the N64 games i loved as a kid. Im gonna get another 360 cause i miss it and an slim PS2 to play Dvds and a couple old PS2 games.

I really want to get the game Rival Schools was on the PS1 does anyone remember it thats one of the main reasons for the PS2 that game was amazing

When I say new I dont mean strictly modern. I mostly stick to things that I havent seen, new to me. With games theres not some vast library of AAA titles that no one can ever finish like there is with music, if youve played games since the NES its perfectly possible to have played most of the great games, only a few that might fit your taste come out each year (sometimes less than a few). In my case there arent many games that I feel Ive missed out on and I would rather not miss out on good modern games in favor of playing a game Ive already played or an old mediocre game that I havent played, especially since games are so long and take a major time investment.

Oh my yes. I've had an Amiga since I was 5 years old. 19 years of owning one and I still find little gems that I missed out on.

I still keep my GC even though I own a Wii too, mostly because second hand consoles are worth nothing and because of this (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Game_Boy_Player). Without it I couldn't say that I owned all devices that play GBA games . I believe emulators cheapen playing original games so that's why I won't be getting rid of my consoles.

Yes, still have a PS2, CG along w/ more old stuff...a few yrs ago I wanted a PS3 for GT5 (and little big planet after getting hooked at a buddy's house  ), but GT5 never came out, I lost interest/track, and have debt that needs to be addressed before anything else...thats my excuse :p

I have a Slim PS2 and a Gamecube hooked up to my TV in my bedroom alongside an Xbox 360. I am still working through a large number of games from the previous generation I didn't get to finish, such as Baten Kaitos (both EW&TLO and Origins), Zelda: TP, Paper Mario, FFX and FFXII, Okami, Shadow of the Colossus, etc..

Along with the 360 RPGs (just started Lost Odyssey), this setup will keep me entertained most of the year.

Currently have a GC and NES hooked up alongside my 360.

I don't use the GC much anymore as I have beat all the game I have for it. It's still useful when I want to play some of my old GameBoy games. The GameBoy Player is awesome.

I think I have the NES hooked up just to have it hooked up.

Going to be hooking up the PS2 again as I just bought Hitman 2 and Contracts as I missed out on them the first time.

Also have a Dreamcast sitting in the cabinet for when I'm craving some Crazy Taxi or Sonic Adventures.

I've got a PS2 and have hardly ever turned it on since the day I got an XBox 360 a couple of years ago, just like I pretty much haven't turned on my N64 since the day I got my PS2 and so on and so forth back to my first console (intellivision). Sure, the old consoles were great in their day but that was in the past and I prefer to play new games (that i haven't played before) rather than playing the old games over and over again.

I like going all nostalgia once in a while and playing old games just as much as anybody but they weren't good enough for me to warrant passing up on current generation stuff.

Anyone here still appreciating these "classics" or have you all been seduced by Wii, Xbox360 or PS3 ? For the moment, I see no reason to "upgrade" as the new consoles offer just more of the same, only with better graphics.

You can take that same sentence and replace "Wii, Xbox360 or PS3" with any older generation of consoles for the most part. I'm sure lots of people said the exact same thing when the NES, SNES, Genesis, N64, etc were released. Just like I'm sure years from now someone will say "Anyone here still appreciating the Wii/XBox360/PS3 or have you all been seduced by the Super Wii, XBox 720 or PS4?".
