Any thoughts on whether or not it is safe to buy the 27" from Amazon in terms of the screen issues? Will they have new stock, or do I need to be weary of their stock?

its safe to buy 27" imacs anywhere. always has been.
it comes with a warranty in case something is wrong with it.

The point is to avoid having to deal with taking it in to get replaced or repaired.

"safe" is a relative term. What YOU may find unacceptable in terms of screen variance, Apple may deem to be "within spec".

No it definately is not safe. I am on my 3rd replacement and it still is not acceptable.

I know of a few people who are waiting to purchase an iMac when the refresh comes out. Right now, there seems to be too many problems with this current generation. If you can, just wait it out. Even the current refurbished models have yellow tint in them.

My 24" iMac has a $1630 repair bill on it, so it's pretty much a necessity at this point.

LCD has gray lines through it, superdrive spits out disks, bluetooth disconnects randomly. It's only ~18 months old but I do work computers quite a bit.

Damn man that sucks. Only problem I have ever had with my iMac was my older 20" and the SuperDrive went out. Was under warranty. I leave my iMacs running 24/7 and use them a lot for stream media to my XBOX/PS3.

they are all the same and your chances of getting a defective one from amazon are the same as getting one from apple.com
