Option. You most definitely do not have to. It is not a contractual agreement either. If you want to pay this month but not next month, that is completely fine. "Pay as you go" - esque.
Your plan sounds fine, the only thing is you will not ALWAYS have your iPad and not being able to whip your iPhone out of your pocket to look something up real quick will be quite depressing. However, your iPhone, your iPad, your money, YOUR CHOICE :)
Hope I helped.

You say you worked for ATT, know what you're talking about, and can answer any questions people have relating to ATT. YET, you don't even know the basics of how the iPad 3G plan works!
Also, I have no idea what you were talking about with the stolen iPhone stuff, what does "take out the internet for the iPhone" mean?

Firstly, if you worked at baskin robins would you be able to tell people every type of ice cream you sell with no assistance?
Second, he means that he is going to take the "iPhone data plan" off but keep his iPhone. You just call them and tell them you are getting rid of your iPhone and they will take it off. Now since he is saving $30 a month since he "doesn't have an iPhone" he will put that $30 a month back into the iPad. However, if he to access the internet on his iPhone it will be pay per use now.

Maybe... but I definitely would be able to tell about the basic flavors. I'm just saying that the iPad not being on a contract was one of the most publicized features when it was introduced and you'd think it would be known by someone that claims so much knowledge about ATT.

The way I read it was he's not just calling them and telling them to take it off, he's lying to them and saying its stolen, which I think is illegal.
