I have a sound sample that I'd like to be able to play as an instrument i.e. transpose it in order to make a complete tune on the on-screen keyboard. After some browsing, I can't really find a straightforward answer. Any ideas?

You need a sampler to do that.

Ah just found a free one for OS X. I'll give it a go. Thanks for the pointer.

Actually, what I found turned out not to be what I really wanted in the end, sadly. I believe what I really needed was something that could create a soundfont, but googling how to create soundfonts has left me none-the-wiser.

Garage Band will play EXS24 format samples. Just copy the samples into the right folders and they show up in GB.

Which wasn't at all what the OP was after.
