i7 iMac's no longer build to order - Available in stores

Not sure when this happened or if anyone has posted it around here (its possible I'm just out of the loop), but I walked into the Yorkdale Apple store last night and bought an i7 iMac. You no longer have to buy them online as build to order and wait for shipping. They also had one on display.

Yup. My local store replaced my I7 last Friday with a brand, spanking new unit from store inventory. Manufactured week 11 of 2010. No issues so far...

I've had very good results to day with the minor issues I've had with my macbook pro and my iMacs. Further, in the three years I have been using macs, I've seen mostly the same techs behind the genius counter at the store.

It's nice to deal locally, with people who speak the same language, and who can make decisions. :D

Sounds like they are everywhere. Not a bad thing of course. Great that Apple pushes the high-end out of their warehouses

I was happy to see them, but a little sad too. I got a i5 because I don't like ordering online (i know, I'm weird that way). I did that because the apple store rep's told me they were never going to get i7's as a stock item. Oh, well, I love my i5.... just need to find a way to pass down my i5 to my wife so I can go pick up a i7.

Usually what is online only, stays online only, but maybe i7s were so popular and people were asking could they get them from retail stores, so Apple decided to unleash them.

27", 2.8GHz Core i7, 4GB RAM, 1TB HD. Same as i5 but with i7

Overpriced 2TB drive and 8 gigs of overpriced ram would be BTO.

As the Hammer already pointed out, adding an additional 4 gigs (2 x 2) is about $100.

Keep the 1TB internal and spend the $250 apple charges for the 2TB internal on a 2TB FW800 external. 3 gigs total space then. Or get 2 1TB USB 2 drives for $80 each, $160, and have one for Time Machine backup.

The imacs in the refurb store seem to be routinely shipping with 2 TB drives. I got two 27" machines ordered one week apart and they both had 2 TB drives.

I have been wanting to switch to mac for a long time and i decided to go for the iMac i7. I went to my nearest apple store and went in to ask them if they were selling i7's and they said yes but don't have any in stock, and dont know when they will get some more. So I asked them if I could give them my number and they could ring me when they had some more, they said no. I asked if i could give them my email and they said no. Therefore, every morning i ring them and ask,"Do you have any i7's?" (I don't like ordering online - and the shipping time [of what i have heard on this forum] aren't the best in the world) I cannot GET TO SLEEP! because I'm so excited about my new iMac replacing my old Dell E520!!!

Yes, 99% of the 27" iMacs still have this issue despite what some zealots may tell you.

it's not the shipping times its also the fact that i don't like ordering online, i know it's safe and that not much goes wrong but i wold prefer to buy it from a real person

I used to think this same thing about banks. I liked going into them and talking to a teller. But every frackin time you ask a question they just say "Did you call the 800 number? or "you will need to call the 800 number for that" -- ugh.

What would be the worst case scenario? It shows up a day late? It gets lost and they have to send a new one?

Got my 27'' i7 from the Regent Street :apple: store and couldn't believe my luck when out of sheer desperation I asked:
-Love the 27'' screen, but not so sure about the i5. Do you carry the i7 in store?

online anyone can get an education discount by just clicking on a local school. in the store that can't be done without an id. the 27" i7 is 120 dollars less with edu discount. just some free food for thought.

There's something to be said for the lack of security of even banks nowadays...IMO, there's nothing wrong with not trusting online security. In the last few years, I've received more than a few letters from banks and online companies explaining that they've had a security breach and to follow certain procedures to see if I've been impacted. I still purchase online but I'm definitely more wary than I was a few years ago.
